Chapter 55 - Back to the Beginning

The room felt different now.

Not safer.

Not calmer.

Just… decided.

They weren't guessing anymore.

They weren't reacting.

They were walking straight into it.

Emily packed the last few things quietly.

Only what mattered.

Noah stayed close.

Watching everything with wide, serious eyes.

"Are we going far?" he asked.

Emily smiled faintly.

"I think… we're going back."

Daniel stood near the door.

Phone in hand.

Typing something quickly.

The man glanced at him.

"You sure about this?" he asked.

Daniel didn't look up.

"No."

A pause.

"But we're going anyway."

The man nodded slowly.

"Fair enough."

He shut down the last system.

Screens going dark one by one.

"Once we leave," he said,

"this place is gone."

Emily frowned.

"Gone?"

The man gave a small shrug.

"Better than being found."

Daniel slipped the drive into his pocket.

"Good."

Noah looked around the room.

"Are we coming back here?"

The man smiled slightly.

"Nope."

A beat.

"And that's a good thing."

They stepped outside.

The air felt colder.

Sharper.

Or maybe—

It just felt that way now.

Daniel checked the street.

Clear.

"For now," he muttered.

Emily stepped beside him.

"Where exactly are we going?"

Daniel looked ahead.

Then said—

"A place I hoped I'd never see again."

The car ride was quiet.

No music.

No small talk.

Just the low hum of the engine—

And thoughts no one said out loud.

Noah leaned against Emily.

Trying to stay strong.

But even he felt it now.

This wasn't just an adventure.

This was something serious.

Emily gently brushed his hair.

"We'll be okay," she whispered.

Noah nodded.

Because he trusted her.

Even if he didn't understand everything.

Daniel sat in the front.

Eyes fixed on the road.

But his mind—

Was somewhere else.

Back.

To a place he had buried.

Forgotten.

Or tried to.

After a long drive—

The car slowed.

Then stopped.

Emily looked outside.

And froze.

"…This place…"

It didn't look like much.

Old building.

Isolated.

Almost abandoned.

But something about it—

Felt wrong.

Daniel stepped out first.

Standing still for a moment.

Looking at it.

"This is it," he said quietly.

Emily stepped out next.

Holding Noah's hand tightly.

"What is this place?" she asked.

Daniel didn't answer immediately.

Then—

"It's where they made me."

Silence.

Because that meant—

This wasn't just a location.

It was a past.

A history.

Something deeper.

The man stepped out too.

Looking around.

"…Yeah," he muttered.

"I don't like this already."

Daniel walked forward slowly.

Each step heavier than the last.

The doors of the building—

Were already open.

Emily's heart skipped.

"They're expecting us."

Daniel nodded.

"Yeah."

Noah squeezed her hand tighter.

"Do we have to go in?"

Emily knelt slightly.

Her voice soft.

"We go together."

Noah nodded.

Holding on.

Daniel reached the entrance.

Paused.

Just for a second.

Then—

He stepped inside.

The others followed.

Inside—

Dark.

Quiet.

Too quiet.

Footsteps echoed.

Each sound—

Louder than it should be.

Emily looked around.

"This place feels…"

Daniel finished it.

"Wrong."

Suddenly—

Lights flickered on.

One by one.

Revealing the inside.

Rooms.

Hallways.

Equipment.

Old—

But not abandoned.

The man looked around.

"…This wasn't shut down."

Daniel's expression hardened.

"No."

A slow sound echoed.

Footsteps.

From deeper inside.

Someone was coming.

Noah pressed closer to Emily.

The footsteps stopped.

Just out of sight.

Then—

A voice.

Calm.

Familiar.

"I was wondering when you'd come back."

Daniel froze.

Emily looked at him.

Because she saw it again—

That recognition.

Slowly—

A figure stepped into the light.

And Daniel whispered—

"…You."

The man smiled slightly.

Not warm.

Not kind.

"Welcome home, Daniel."

Silence fell heavy again.

Because whatever this place was—

Whatever happened here—

It wasn't over.

It had just been waiting.

For him to return.
