Chapter 50: No Way Out
The knock echoed again.
Louder.
Heavier.
Final.
No one moved.
Not at first.
The room felt frozen—
Like even breathing too loud might break something.
Noah clutched Emily tightly.
His small fingers gripping her arm.
"Mom…" he whispered.
Emily held him close.
Her heart racing—
But her voice soft.
"I'm here."
Daniel stood near the door.
Still.
Focused.
Not panicking.
Thinking.
The man quickly moved behind them.
Lowering his voice.
"There's a back exit," he said.
Daniel shook his head slightly.
"They'll cover it."
Another knock.
Harder.
"Last chance," the voice outside said.
Emily's breath caught.
"They're not leaving," she whispered.
Daniel turned to her.
"No."
A pause.
"But neither are we."
Something in his tone changed.
Not fear.
Decision.
"What are you thinking?" Emily asked.
Daniel looked around the room.
Then at the screens.
Then at the drive in his hand.
"We use it."
The man frowned.
"Use it how?"
Daniel's eyes sharpened.
"As insurance."
Emily didn't understand at first.
Then—
"You mean—"
Daniel nodded.
"If anything happens to us… everything gets released."
Silence.
Because that wasn't just a plan—
That was a threat.
The man's expression shifted.
"…That could work."
Emily's heart pounded faster.
"Or it could make them angrier."
Daniel met her eyes.
"They're already angry."
Another knock.
This time—
The door shook slightly.
"We're done waiting," the voice said.
Noah buried his face into Emily.
She closed her eyes for a second.
Then opened them.
Stronger.
"Okay," she said quietly.
Daniel looked at her.
"Okay?"
Emily nodded.
"We do it your way."
That was all he needed.
The man rushed back to the system.
Typing fast.
"Setting a dead trigger," he said.
Daniel stood beside him.
"How long?"
"Seconds."
The screen flashed.
Lines of code running.
"If this system doesn't get a signal every hour…" the man continued,
"…everything goes public."
Emily swallowed.
"No stopping it?"
The man shook his head.
"Not once it starts."
Daniel nodded.
"Good."
Another hit on the door.
This time—
Louder than before.
"They're coming in," the man said.
Noah looked up.
Tears in his eyes now.
"I'm scared," he whispered.
Emily held him tighter.
"I know."
Her voice broke slightly—
But she held it together.
"I am too."
Daniel looked at them.
Then walked over.
He knelt slightly in front of Noah.
"Hey," he said gently.
Noah looked at him.
"We're going to be okay," Daniel said.
Noah hesitated.
"Promise?"
Daniel didn't look away.
"I promise."
A loud crack.
The door handle shook.
"Time's up," the voice outside said.
Daniel stood up.
His expression—
Calm.
Too calm.
He looked at Emily.
"Stay behind me."
Emily nodded.
Holding Noah close.
The man stepped back from the system.
"It's set," he said.
Daniel took a breath.
Then—
He moved toward the door.
Another hit.
Wood cracking.
And then—
The door burst open.
Two men stepped inside.
Cold eyes.
Sharp movements.
They stopped—
Seeing them.
Silence.
Just for a second.
Then one of them spoke—
"Give it to us."
Daniel didn't move.
Didn't step back.
"You're too late," he said.
The man frowned slightly.
"What?"
Daniel held his gaze.
"If we don't walk out of here… everything goes public."
A pause.
A shift.
Because now—
The balance had changed.
The second man stepped forward.
"You think that scares us?"
Daniel's voice stayed steady.
"No."
A beat.
"But it should scare the people above you."
Silence again.
Heavier this time.
The two men exchanged a look.
A decision passing between them.
And for the first time—
They hesitated.
Because this wasn't just a chase anymore.
It was a standoff.
And neither side—
Could afford to lose.
