Chapter 26 - The Night We Almost Broke

The house was silent again.

But this time, the silence didn't feel peaceful.

It felt… fragile.

Like something could shatter at any moment.

Emily sat beside Noah on the bed, gently stroking his hair as he slowly drifted back to sleep. His small fingers still clutched the edge of her sleeve, as if afraid she might disappear if he let go.

Daniel stood near the door, watching quietly.

He didn't move.

Didn't speak.

Because something inside him felt… unsettled.

Not because of Noah.

But because of everything else.

Everything that had been said.

Everything that hadn't.

After a few minutes, Noah's breathing became steady again.

He was asleep.

Emily carefully removed her hand and stood up slowly.

She turned toward Daniel and gestured softly.

"Let's go outside."

They stepped out into the small backyard.

The night air was cooler now.

A faint wind moved through the trees, carrying the distant sounds of the quiet town.

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

Then—

"You shouldn't have said that."

Emily's voice broke the silence.

Daniel frowned slightly.

"Said what?"

"That you still have feelings for me."

Daniel looked at her.

"Why?"

Emily crossed her arms.

"Because it complicates things."

Daniel let out a slow breath.

"Everything is already complicated, Emily."

"That doesn't mean we should make it worse."

Daniel stepped closer.

"I'm not trying to make anything worse. I'm just being honest."

Emily shook her head.

"Honesty isn't always the right thing at the right time."

Daniel stared at her.

"That doesn't make any sense."

"It does," she said firmly. "Not when there's a child involved."

Daniel's expression hardened slightly.

"Noah is not a reason to ignore how we feel."

Emily's eyes flashed.

"He's not a reason—he's the priority!"

Her voice was louder now.

Sharper.

Daniel didn't step back.

"And what about us?" he asked. "Do we just pretend none of that matters?"

Emily hesitated.

That question hit deeper than she expected.

"I'm not pretending," she said, softer now. "I'm protecting what we have."

Daniel looked at her carefully.

"And what do we have, Emily?"

The question hung in the air.

Heavy.

Unavoidable.

Emily opened her mouth to answer…

But no words came out.

Because she didn't know.

Not anymore.

Daniel ran a hand through his hair, frustrated.

"This is exactly what I was afraid of," he said.

Emily looked at him.

"What do you mean?"

"That you'd keep shutting me out," he replied. "Even now."

Emily stepped back slightly.

"I'm not shutting you out."

"You are," Daniel said. "You're letting me be part of Noah's life… but not yours."

Emily froze.

The truth in his words stung.

"That's not fair," she whispered.

Daniel's voice softened.

"Neither is what we went through."

Silence.

Deep.

Uncomfortable silence.

A sudden gust of wind passed between them.

Emily wrapped her arms around herself.

"I don't know how to do this," she admitted quietly.

Daniel's expression changed.

"What?"

"This," she said, her voice trembling slightly. "Having you back in my life… after everything."

Daniel took a step closer.

"You don't have to figure it out all at once."

Emily shook her head.

"But I have to be careful."

Daniel nodded.

"I understand that."

"Do you?" she asked softly.

Daniel looked into her eyes.

"I'm trying to."

That answer… was honest.

And maybe that's why it hurt less.

For a moment, they just stood there.

Two people.

Bound by the past.

Connected by the present.

Unsure of the future.

Then Emily spoke again.

"We should take things slow."

Daniel nodded immediately.

"I agree."

"No pressure," she continued. "No expectations."

Daniel gave a small, tired smile.

"That might be hard."

Emily almost smiled back.

"But necessary."

Daniel sighed.

"Okay."

They stood there a little longer.

Not arguing.

Not solving anything.

But not walking away either.

And sometimes…

That was enough.

As they went back inside—

The house felt the same.

But something between them had shifted.

Not broken.

Not fixed.

Just… exposed.

Raw.

Real.

Because some nights aren't meant to bring answers.

Some nights are meant to show you just how much is still unresolved.

And how close everything can come…

To falling apart.
