Chapter 33 - The silence after destruction

Silence.

For the first time… everything was quiet.

The battlefield that once roared with chaos now stood broken and still. Cracks ran through the walls like scars, debris covered the ground, and the air carried the weight of what had just happened.

Aarav stood in the middle of it all.

Breathing.

Alive.

But something… didn't feel right.

His eyes slowly scanned the destruction around him. Every broken piece, every mark on the ground—it all felt distant, like he was looking at someone else's memory.

"Aarav…"

Meera's voice pulled him back.

She walked toward him carefully, her steps slow, as if afraid that everything might collapse again at any moment. Her eyes searched his face—not for victory, but for him.

"Are you okay?" she asked softly.

Aarav didn't answer immediately.

He looked at his hands.

They were still trembling.

"I… I think so," he said finally, though even he didn't sound convinced.

Rayan approached from behind, his device still flickering weakly. His usual confident expression was gone—replaced by something more serious.

"That wasn't normal," he said.

Meera glanced at him. "What do you mean?"

Rayan didn't respond right away. Instead, he activated his device again, scanning the surroundings. The screen struggled to stabilize, numbers glitching as if whatever energy had been here was still interfering.

"That creature…" he started slowly, "it wasn't acting on instinct."

Aarav looked up. "What are you saying?"

Rayan's eyes narrowed at the data.

"I'm saying… it was being controlled."

Silence returned—but this time, it felt heavier.

Meera frowned. "Controlled? By who?"

Rayan shook his head. "That's the problem… I don't know."

A cold wind passed through the broken corridor, carrying dust along with it.

Aarav's grip tightened slightly.

"So this isn't over," he said quietly.

Rayan gave a dry laugh. "Not even close."

Meera looked between them, her expression serious now. "Then what do we do?"

Before anyone could answer—

A sudden flicker of energy pulsed through the air.

All three of them froze.

Aarav felt it immediately.

That same presence.

But different.

Stronger.

Watching.

His eyes slowly shifted upward.

For a split second—

he saw something.

A shadow.

Not physical. Not clear. But… real enough to feel.

And then—

it was gone.

"What was that?" Meera asked, her voice tense.

Aarav didn't respond.

Because deep inside…

he already knew.

"We're not dealing with just one enemy," he said quietly.

Rayan looked at him. "You felt it too?"

Aarav nodded.

His gaze hardened.

"Something bigger is coming."

The mark on his wrist glowed faintly again.

Not violently like before—

but steadily.

Like a signal.

Or a warning.
