Chapter 34 - Chapter 34: The Fracture

The sky had cracked.

Not metaphorically.

Not poetically.

Literally.

A fracture spread across the darkness above Blackridge like a split in a mirror.

But this mirror was reality itself.

And whatever was on the other side…

Was pushing through.

Kai stared upward.

Sovereign Flame burning steadily around his body now.

Controlled.

Anchored.

Drakar stood beside him on the rubble.

The bonded dragon's golden eyes were locked on the fracture above.

Kai had seen Drakar face Dragon Generals.

Abyss Titans.

God-level entities.

The dragon had never once looked uncertain.

Until now.

"…Okay," Kai said quietly.

"That's new."

Lyra floated beside him on her platform.

Her staff glowed faintly.

But her eyes were wide.

The First Dragon Sovereign still hovered above the battlefield.

Ancient wings perfectly still.

It had spoken one word when the fracture appeared.

No.

Just that.

And that single word from a dragon that had survived ten thousand years of war…

Was the most terrifying thing Kai had heard all night.

He looked up at the ancient dragon.

"What is that?"

The First Dragon Sovereign didn't answer immediately.

Its glowing eyes were fixed on the fracture.

Reading it.

Studying something Kai couldn't see.

Then finally—

"That is not a portal."

Kai waited.

"Not a rift."

"Then what?" Lyra asked carefully.

The ancient dragon turned its head slowly.

Its voice came lower than before.

"That is a scar."

The battlefield remained frozen.

Even the Void Emperor hadn't moved.

The massive ruler of void stood exactly where it had taken that single step backward.

Crown of dark stars still.

Purple eyes locked on the fracture above.

Kai looked at the emperor.

"You know what caused it."

It wasn't a question.

The Void Emperor turned slightly toward him.

"Yes."

"Tell me."

The emperor was quiet for a moment.

The fracture spread another meter across the sky.

Slowly.

Silently.

Like something breathing on the other side.

Then the emperor spoke.

"Every time a Dragon Sovereign awakens…"

Kai listened.

"…the multiverse registers the event."

Kai crossed his arms.

"I already know that part."

"What you do not know," the emperor continued, "is what registers it."

The fracture pulsed once.

A faint light came from inside it.

Not golden.

Not void purple.

Something colorless.

Something that felt older than color itself.

Lyra whispered.

"Kai…"

Kai held up one hand.

She went quiet.

"Keep talking," he said to the emperor.

The Void Emperor looked at the fracture again.

"Beyond the multiverse…"

A pause.

"…there are observers."

Kai blinked.

"Observers."

"Beings that exist outside existence itself."

Kai stared at the emperor.

"You're telling me there's something above gods."

"Yes."

"Above void rulers."

"Yes."

Kai rubbed his face slowly.

"…Of course there is."

The fracture pulsed again.

Stronger this time.

The colorless light inside it grew slightly brighter.

Drakar let out a low sound beside Kai.

Not a growl.

Something more instinctive.

A warning.

The First Dragon Sovereign suddenly moved.

Its massive wings spread fully across the sky.

Golden energy erupted from its body.

The ancient dragon turned toward the entire battlefield.

Its voice boomed across the ruins.

"Every dragon — defensive positions. Now."

The response was immediate.

Every dragon in the sky shifted formation.

The Dragon Queen descended lower.

The Dragon Emperor roared once.

Hundreds of dragons circled tighter above Blackridge.

A living shield in the sky.

Kai watched the formation form above him.

"…That's the first time I've seen it give a direct order."

Lyra nodded slowly beside him.

"That means whatever is coming…"

She didn't finish the sentence.

She didn't need to.

The Void Titan suddenly stepped forward.

The massive creature moved past the Void Emperor.

Placed itself between the battlefield and the fracture.

Kai noticed immediately.

"Wait."

He looked at the emperor.

"Your titan is protecting us."

The emperor didn't deny it.

"The observers do not distinguish between void and sovereign."

Kai frowned.

"They're a threat to everyone?"

"To everything," the emperor said quietly.

"That exists inside the multiverse."

The fracture pulsed a third time.

This time the sound came with it.

Not loud.

Not explosive.

A single low tone.

Like a note played on an instrument so enormous the universe itself was the string.

Every living thing on the battlefield flinched.

Dragons.

Demons.

Abyss creatures.

Even Kai felt it in his chest.

Not pain.

Something deeper.

Like the sound had touched something inside him that had no name.

The Sovereign Flame flickered once.

Just once.

Then burned steadier than before.

The system flashed.

[Sovereign Flame — Resonating with unknown frequency]

[Source: Unknown]

[Warning: Do not extinguish the flame]

Kai stared at the message.

"…Do not extinguish?"

He looked at his hand.

The white fire was still there.

But it had changed slightly.

It was pulsing now.

In the same rhythm as the fracture.

Lyra saw it instantly.

"Kai — your flame is syncing with that thing."

"I see it."

"That can't be good."

"Probably not."

Drakar moved closer.

The bonded dragon pressed its shoulder against Kai's side.

Warm.

Steady.

Present.

Kai placed one hand on the dragon briefly.

Then looked back at the fracture.

The colorless light inside was brighter now.

Taking shape.

Becoming something.

The First Dragon Sovereign descended to just above Kai.

Lower than it had ever come before.

Its ancient eyes looked directly at him.

"Sovereign heir."

Kai looked up.

"The observers respond to one thing."

Kai waited.

"Power that exceeds the boundaries of what the multiverse can contain."

Kai processed that.

Then slowly looked at the Sovereign Flame around his hand.

"…The flame triggered it."

The ancient dragon nodded once.

"Your awakening was registered."

Kai exhaled slowly.

"So by unlocking this power…"

"You announced your existence to beings that exist above existence."

The fracture split wider.

CRAAAACK.

A sliver of colorless light poured through.

The ground beneath it didn't crack.

Didn't shake.

It simply became slightly less real.

Like looking at a photo of something rather than the thing itself.

Lyra stepped back on her platform.

"Kai… that light is erasing matter."

Kai watched a section of broken wall near the fracture slowly lose its edges.

Become blurred.

Like it was being forgotten rather than destroyed.

He turned to the Void Emperor.

"Can you fight that?"

The emperor answered honestly.

"No."

Kai turned to the First Dragon Sovereign.

"Can you?"

The ancient dragon was quiet for one long moment.

"Not alone."

Kai looked at the fracture.

At the colorless light becoming a shape inside it.

At every ancient power on the battlefield standing still.

Waiting.

All of them.

Looking at him.

He sighed once.

Quietly.

Then straightened.

Sovereign Flame burning white around his body.

Drakar rising to full height beside him.

"Well…"

Kai rolled his shoulders slowly.

"Guess being Dragon Sovereign just got complicated."

The fracture answered with another pulse of colorless light.

And for the first time in ten thousand years — something beyond the multiverse had finally looked back.
