Ren woke slowly, his body stiff and aching from the previous night's exhaustion. His eyes opened just enough to catch the faint glow of the dying campfire, its embers barely clinging to life in the cold air.
He pushed himself upright with a groan, his muscles protesting every movement as if they had been torn apart and barely stitched back together. The weight of his fatigue pressed down on him, but unlike before, there was something different—something more controlled about how he endured it.
'Damn it… my whole body feels like it's about to fall apart.' He flexed his fingers slowly, watching as they trembled slightly before regaining a bit of stability.
Behind him, the Adam remained still, its massive body unmoving as it lay in its strange hibernation. Its breathing was slow and deep, almost unnatural, as if it had sunk into a state far beyond simple sleep.
Ren turned his head slightly, observing it with narrowed eyes as he tried to recall everything Ken had said. The memory was hazy, but one thing remained clear—the beast was no longer an enemy, at least not for now.
'If that thing wakes up before I'm ready, I'm dead… no question about it.' He swallowed dryly, forcing himself to stand despite the lingering weakness in his legs.
Ren stumbled forward a few steps before catching his balance, his body still adjusting to movement after everything it had been through. The cold air bit at his skin, but he barely reacted this time, his focus entirely on what needed to be done.
'I need food… and I need to figure out this whole soul energy thing.' His eyes scanned the surrounding forest, searching for anything familiar.
The snow-covered trees stretched endlessly in every direction, their identical forms making it nearly impossible to distinguish one path from another. The silence was suffocating, broken only by the faint crunch of his footsteps against the snow.
Ren exhaled slowly, steadying himself as he began walking deeper into the forest. Each step was deliberate, cautious, as he kept his senses alert for any sign of danger.
"I'm on my own now… at least for a while." His voice was quiet, almost uncertain, as if saying it out loud made the reality more real.
He moved carefully, recalling the berries he had eaten before and the mistake he had made. The memory of nearly poisoning himself was still fresh, and he had no intention of repeating it.
Ren crouched near a cluster of bushes, brushing aside the snow to reveal small, dark-colored berries hidden beneath. His eyes narrowed as he inspected them, comparing their appearance to what he could remember.
'These should be the right ones… I think.' He hesitated for a moment before plucking a single berry and holding it between his fingers.
Instead of eating it immediately, he paused, remembering something Ken had mentioned. His brow furrowed slightly as he tried to replicate the faint sensation he had felt before.
'Soul energy… how the hell do I even use that…' He closed his eyes briefly, focusing inward.
At first, there was nothing but darkness and the dull ache of his exhaustion. But as he concentrated, he began to feel something faint—a subtle warmth deep within him, barely noticeable but undeniably present.
Ren's eyes opened slightly as he tried to guide that feeling outward. It was awkward and clumsy, like trying to move a muscle he had never used before.
'Come on… just a little…' The berry in his hand trembled slightly as he focused harder.
A faint shimmer passed over its surface, almost imperceptible, but enough to make Ren's eyes widen slightly. The sensation drained him more than he expected, his breath hitching as he struggled to maintain it.
"Damn… that's exhausting…" He released the energy almost immediately, his hand dropping slightly as he steadied himself.
Even so, he stared at the berry with a hint of disbelief. It wasn't much, but it was proof that he could actually do it.
Ren repeated the process slowly, gathering more berries and attempting to coat them in that faint energy. Each attempt was slightly easier than the last, though the strain remained.
Time passed as he worked, his movements becoming more consistent despite the occasional failure. Some berries slipped from his grasp, others failed to react at all, but he continued regardless.
Eventually, he had a small handful of berries that carried that faint shimmer. It wasn't perfect, but it was enough for now.
Ren sat back slightly, wiping the sweat from his forehead despite the cold. His breathing was heavier than it should have been, but there was a sense of progress in his eyes.
'This might actually work…' He looked down at the berries again, a small spark of confidence forming within him.
Suddenly, a faint sound reached his ears.
Ren froze instantly, his body going still as his head turned slightly toward the source. The faint crunch of footsteps echoed through the snow, distant but unmistakable.
'Someone's here…' His grip tightened around the berries as his mind raced.
Without hesitation, Ren moved quickly but quietly, retreating into the cover of the trees. His movements were careful, deliberate, as he positioned himself behind a thick trunk.
From there, he peeked out just enough to catch a glimpse of the approaching figures.
A small group—no, a cohort—was moving through the forest.
They wore armor, their movements coordinated and disciplined as they advanced cautiously. Their presence alone was enough to send a chill down Ren's spine.
'Knights…?' His eyes narrowed as he observed them more closely.
They weren't villagers, that much was obvious. Their posture, their equipment, even the way they scanned their surroundings—it was clear they were trained.
Ren lowered himself slightly, keeping his presence hidden as he watched them. His breathing slowed as he focused, his earlier exhaustion momentarily pushed aside by the tension.
'What are they doing out here…' His mind raced with possibilities, none of them comforting.
He shifted slightly, moving parallel to their path while maintaining his distance. His steps were careful, minimizing sound as he navigated through the trees.
Ren's eyes never left them, tracking their movements as they progressed deeper into the forest. He studied their formation, their spacing, the way they reacted to their environment.
'They're searching for something… or someone…' The thought sent a slight chill down his spine.
For a moment, his mind drifted to the Adam behind him. If they got too close…
'No… I can't let that happen.' His expression hardened slightly.
Ren adjusted his position again, moving ahead of their path while staying out of sight. He kept a careful distance, ensuring he could monitor them without being detected.
Every movement they made, he noted.
Every pause, every glance, every shift in formation—it all fed into his understanding of them.
'I need to make sure they don't come anywhere near that cave.' His jaw tightened slightly as he continued observing.
At one point, one of the knights slowed, glancing in Ren's general direction. Ren froze instantly, his body pressing against the tree as he held his breath.
Seconds passed.
Then the knight turned away, continuing forward as if nothing had happened.
Ren exhaled slowly, his heart pounding against his chest. Sweat formed along his brow despite the cold.
'That was too close…' He steadied himself, forcing his breathing back under control.
He continued shadowing them, adjusting his path whenever necessary to remain hidden. The forest worked in his favor, its endless repetition making it difficult for the knights to track anything specific.
Still, Ren knew he couldn't rely on that forever.
'I need to guide them away… without them realizing it.' His eyes flickered slightly as he thought.
Carefully, he moved to a different position, circling around them to influence their direction subtly. He disturbed the snow in certain areas, leaving faint trails that could draw their attention.
It was risky, but it was the only option he had.
The knights eventually shifted slightly, their path altering just enough to move them away from the cave's direction.
Ren watched closely, ensuring the change held.
'Good… keep going that way…' His focus remained sharp, his body tense.
He continued trailing them for a while longer, making small adjustments whenever necessary. Each movement was calculated, each decision made with care.
Eventually, the distance between them and the cave grew large enough for Ren to relax slightly.
'That should be enough…' He slowed his pace, allowing them to move further ahead without interference.
Ren remained hidden for a few more moments, just to be sure. Only when he was certain they were gone did he finally exhale fully.
His body sagged slightly, the tension leaving him all at once.
"…Damn… that was stressful…" He muttered under his breath.
Ren looked down at the berries still in his hand, then back toward the direction of the cave.
'I need to get back… and fast.' His expression hardened as he turned away.
Without wasting another moment, Ren began making his way back through the forest. His steps were quicker now, but still careful as he navigated the snow-covered terrain.
The forest remained as silent as ever, its endless white stretching out in all directions. But this time, Ren moved with a clearer purpose.
He wasn't just surviving anymore, he was preparing, and for the first time, even if just slightly—
He was thinking ahead.
