Chapter 37 - The Calm Before

She went home the day before the dinner.

Her father noticed something different about her.

Didn't name it.

Said: you look like someone who has decided something without knowing they've decided it.

She said she hadn't decided anything.

He said: I know. That's what I said.

That evening, Malik asked her to the grand council dinner.

She said yes.

She went home on a Thursday.

Not because anyone suggested it. Not because the agreement required it or the schedule permitted it or any external reason presented itself as the cause. She went because something in her — the practical, unsentimental, entirely honest part of her that she had been listening to her whole life — said: go home before tomorrow. Ground yourself in the familiar before whatever is coming.

She told Aldric at the morning hour that she would be spending the day at her father's house.

Aldric said: of course, and produced a palace escort without being asked, which she declined, and a covered carriage, which she also declined, and finally a plain agreement that she would return by the evening hour, which she accepted because it was reasonable.

She walked.

The city was different from inside it than it was from the palace garden wall.

She had been looking at it from a distance for five weeks — the thousand small lights of evening, the rooftop lines against the morning sky, the market sounds that carried on certain winds all the way to the east courtyard. From the palace it was a view. From inside it, walking the familiar streets with the early morning market setting up around her, it was a place. Her place. The specific geography of a life — this corner where the baker started his fire before dawn, this stretch of cobblestones that ran uneven from the winter frost three years ago and had never been properly repaired, this turn that smelled of the dyer's workshop two streets over regardless of the wind direction.

She noticed that she had missed it.

Not with the sharp ache of homesickness — she was not a person given to aching. With the quiet recognition of someone returning to something they had not realized they valued until the return made the valuing visible.

The market quarter was waking up.

She passed three stalls she knew, nodded to the owners, received the specific looks of people who had heard things and were deciding how to ask about them. She did not stop to make it easier for them to ask. She kept walking.

Her father's stall was open.

He was arranging the morning's stock with the methodical efficiency she had grown up watching — the bolts organized by weight and fiber, the samples laid out in the particular order that made the progression of quality visible without requiring explanation. He did this the same way every morning. He had been doing it the same way every morning for forty years. There was something in the consistency of it that she found, this particular morning, more settling than she had words for.

He looked up when she arrived.

He looked at her the way he always looked at her — the full attention, the unhurried assessment, the complete absence of any agenda other than seeing her accurately.

"You came," he said.

"I said I would," she said.

"You said maybe," he said. "There's a difference."

She helped him finish the stock arrangement. They worked without speaking much — the easy quiet of two people who knew each other well enough not to require sound to fill the space between them. She folded. He organized. The morning market moved around them with its familiar noise and color and the specific smell of the merchant quarter in early autumn, woodsmoke and fresh bread and the cold river air coming off the water two streets east.

At midday they closed the stall for the lunch hour and went inside.

The kitchen table. Her chair — the one that had always been her chair, the one with the slight unevenness in the left rear leg that she had learned to compensate for before she was old enough to understand why she was compensating. The bread her father made the same way every week. The particular afternoon light through the kitchen window that she had been looking at her whole life.

She sat.

She was quiet for a moment.

Her father sat across from her and looked at her with the eyes that had been reading her since she was four years old and had never, in all that time, needed her to explain herself before he understood.

"You look different," he said.

"Different how?" she said.

He thought about it in the serious way he thought about everything — not reaching for the first available description but waiting for the accurate one.

"Like someone who has decided something," he said, "without knowing they've decided it yet."

She looked at him.

"I haven't decided anything," she said.

"I know," he said. "That's what I said."

She considered this.

He's right, she thought. Something has shifted in me and I have not yet put a name to it or filed it under a category or decided what it means in practical terms. But it has shifted. He can see it. He has always been able to see the things in me that I haven't yet seen myself.

"Are you all right?" her father asked.

"Yes," she said. And then, because he deserved the honest version: "I'm more all right than I expected to be. I came here thinking I might feel — uncertain. About tomorrow. About whatever is happening at the palace."

"But you don't," he said.

"No," she said. "I feel — settled. Which is strange because I don't know what tomorrow holds."

"It's not strange," her father said. "You're settled because you've already made the decision that matters. Everything else is just — what comes after."

She looked at him.

"What decision have I made?" she asked.

He smiled — the small genuine one, the one he kept for moments when she asked a question she already knew the answer to.

"The one you came home to confirm," he said.

She sat with this.

Outside the kitchen window the market afternoon was moving through its familiar rhythms — the sounds of trade and haggling and the distant bell of the guild clock marking the hours. She had grown up with these sounds. They were as much a part of her as the fabric knowledge and the practical arithmetic and the particular kind of patience that came from watching her father do the same careful work the same careful way every day for forty years.

"He came back to the stall," she said. "After I went to the palace. You told me he bought blue wool."

"Twice," her father said. "Blue the first time. Green the second."

"Green," she said.

"The green you wore the morning you first went with him through the market quarter," her father said. "I recognized it when he asked for it. He described it exactly — the particular shade, the weight of the weave."

She was quiet.

He described it exactly, she thought. He went back to my father's stall and asked for the specific green of a specific morning weeks ago and described it precisely enough that my father recognized which bolt he meant.

"He didn't know you'd told me," her father said. "He bought it like a man buying a thing he wanted. Not performing it. Just — wanting it."

She looked at her hands on the kitchen table.

"He doesn't perform things," she said. "It's one of the first things I noticed about him. Underneath the kingship — the cloak and the formal manner and the cold authority — there's a person who doesn't perform. Who does the real thing or does nothing."

"Like someone else I know," her father said.

She looked at him.

He went back to his bread.

She went back to the palace in the late afternoon.

The city walked differently on the return — she noticed this and filed it without particular analysis. The same streets, the same cobblestones, the same market smells. But she was walking toward something rather than away from something and that changed the quality of the movement.

The palace was busy in a way it hadn't been that morning.

She noticed it immediately — the heightened attention in the staff, the additional activity in the corridors, the specific organized purposefulness of people who were preparing for something significant. She passed two stewards carrying formal table linens. She passed Aldric directing a small team of workers in the great hall corridor with the focused efficiency of a man who had approximately ten things happening simultaneously and was managing all of them.

He saw her.

"Miss Atwood," he said. "Good evening."

"What's happening?" she asked.

"Preparations," he said, in the tone that meant: I will tell you what I am authorized to tell you and nothing further.

She noted this. Continued to her rooms.

She changed — she had worn her plain market clothes for the day and wanted something quieter for the evening. She went to the library.

Malik came at the evening hour.

He sat in his chair. He looked at her with the specific quality he had when he had decided something and was managing the steps toward it — present, certain, the decision already made and now simply being enacted.

"How was your day?" he asked.

"Good," she said. "I went home."

"I know," he said. "Aldric told me."

Of course he had.

She looked at him.

"Tomorrow," he said, "there will be a grand council dinner. Full court. Every significant house in the kingdom represented. Formal table in the great hall." He paused. "I would like you to be there."

She looked at him steadily.

She was aware of the preparations she had seen in the corridors. The table linens. Aldric's ten simultaneous tasks. The specific organized busyness of a palace that had been working toward something for days.

This has been planned for some time, she thought. He is not telling me about a dinner that was just arranged. He is telling me about a dinner that has been in preparation and is now arriving.

He decided something. He didn't tell me. He is telling me now — the evening before — and he is asking whether I will be there.

She studied him for a moment.

I could ask what he has decided.

He wouldn't tell me. Not tonight.

I could say no.

But I'm curious, she thought. I have been watching something build for five weeks and I want to see what it becomes. I want to be in the room when it becomes it.

"Is it a request or an order?" she asked.

He looked at her steadily. "It is whatever it needs to be for you to say yes."

She considered this for a moment.

He said that carefully, she noted. Not: I'm asking you. Not: I need you there. Whatever it needs to be. He is telling me that my presence matters enough that he will call it whatever I need it called.

"Yes," she said.

He nodded.

The corner of his mouth moved.

He stood. He went to the door. He paused.

"Wear something you're comfortable in," he said. "It will be a long evening."

He left.

She looked at the door for a long moment.

Wear something you're comfortable in, she thought. Not: wear something formal. Not: the court will expect a certain standard. Wear something you're comfortable in.

She went back to her book.

She found, for the first time since she had arrived in this palace, that the words on the page meant very little to her.

She read the same paragraph four times.

She set the book down.

She looked at the fire.

Tomorrow, she thought.

Something is going to happen tomorrow.

I don't know what it is.

I find, she noted with the same honest precision she gave everything, that I am not as indifferent to not knowing as I usually am.

That is worth noting.

That is very much worth noting indeed.
