Chapter 79 - Chapter 79: Phase Two Begins

The silence after the voice faded did not feel like relief. It felt like a pause. A calculated one. Aria stood still, her breathing steady but her body tense, her wrist still faintly glowing as if the power inside her hadn't settled. "Phase one," she muttered under her breath, her eyes scanning the forest, "so that was just the beginning." Alpha Kael didn't lower his guard, his gaze sharp as he stepped slightly in front of her again. "Stay focused." Behind them, Ikechukwu tapped his staff lightly. "I no like this kind silence oh… e dey plan something." The air shifted again, but this time it wasn't sudden—it was gradual, like something was building instead of striking. The forest darkened further, not from nightfall but like the light itself was being drained away piece by piece. Aria felt it immediately. "It's changing," she said quietly. Kael nodded once. "Yeah… this isn't the same as before." Then the ground beneath them vibrated—low at first, almost unnoticeable, then stronger. Not an attack. A signal. Ikechukwu frowned. "…Na introduction be this?" Before anyone could respond, the voice returned—calm, distant, and everywhere at once. "Phase two… initiated." The moment those words landed, the forest shifted completely. The trees around them bent—not from wind but from force. The ground cracked in a wide circle, separating them from the rest of the forest like they had been placed inside something. A boundary. Aria's eyes narrowed. "We're trapped." Kael's jaw tightened. "No… we're contained." That word hit differently. Ikechukwu looked around slowly. "…Arena." Then—something dropped from above. Fast. Heavy. BOOM! It landed at the center of the clearing, the ground shaking violently from the impact. Dust rose. The air thickened. When it cleared—Aria saw it. Not a shifting figure. Not a flickering form. This one was solid. Real. Taller than any of them. Broader. Its body looked like it was carved from dark stone and silver light fused together, veins of energy running through it like cracks. Its eyes opened slowly—glowing, steady, aware. Aria's chest tightened slightly. "…That's not like the others." Kael stepped forward. "No." Ikechukwu exhaled. "…This one be boss." The creature stood fully, its presence pressing down on the space around them, heavier than anything they had faced before. Then it spoke, its voice deep and grounded. "Adaptive threat confirmed." Aria clenched her fist slightly. "You people really need new lines." No reaction. "Engagement required." Kael didn't wait this time. He moved first, fast and direct, closing the distance instantly. His strike landed—hard—but the creature didn't move. Not even a step. Kael's eyes narrowed. "…Okay." The creature responded instantly, its arm moving faster than expected. CRASH! Kael blocked, but the force sent him sliding back across the ground. Ikechukwu reacted. "Ah! No be small thing!" He stepped in, swinging his staff with force. The impact landed—but again, the creature barely reacted. It turned slowly toward him. "Secondary threat acknowledged." Ikechukwu blinked. "…I no like that title." It moved again. Faster this time. Ikechukwu barely raised his staff before—BOOM! He was thrown back, hitting the ground hard. "Ikechukwu!" Aria's voice cut through sharply as she stepped forward. Her power rose instantly—not unstable, not scattered—focused. The creature turned toward her. Its gaze locked. "Primary subject engaged." Aria exhaled slowly, steadying herself. "Yeah… I figured." This time, she didn't rush. She watched it. Waited. It moved first. Fast. Direct. No hesitation. Aria reacted, shifting her body just enough to avoid the first strike, her hand rising as she redirected the second. The impact still pushed her back—but she held. "Okay…" she muttered. "…you're stronger." The creature didn't respond. It adapted. Immediately. Its next attack changed angle, speed, timing—forcing her to adjust again. Kael stepped back in, attacking from the side. This time, the creature blocked him—and countered instantly. It was learning both of them. Fast. Ikechukwu groaned as he pushed himself up. "…This one dey use brain join power." Aria felt it too. This wasn't like phase one. This wasn't testing reactions. This was pressure designed to break them. Then something clicked. Her breathing slowed. Her focus sharpened. "It's not trying to overwhelm us…" she said. Kael dodged another strike. "Then what?" Aria's eyes narrowed. "…It's trying to separate us." The realization came just as the creature moved again—this time not at her, not at Kael—but at the ground. BOOM! The impact split the space between them, forcing Kael backward as the terrain shifted. "Kael!" Aria called, but the creature was already moving again—this time directly at her. Alone. Ikechukwu tried to move in—but another strike blocked him off completely. "…E separate us finish!" Aria steadied herself as the creature closed in. No backup. No space. Just her. She exhaled slowly. "…Fine." Her eyes glowed faintly again. "Let's see how far this goes." The creature attacked. She met it. This time—no hesitation. No holding back. Power met power. Force met control. And the moment their clash shook the ground beneath them—Aria realized something. This phase wasn't about survival anymore. It was about dominance. And only one side was meant to stand when it ended.
