The two halves of the thing did not rush toward them. They moved slowly, almost carefully, as if they had already learned that speed was not what would win this fight. One drifted toward Ariana, its shape stretching and narrowing in quiet adjustments, while the other angled toward Kael with a more direct path. Neither showed urgency, and that lack of urgency unsettled Ariana more than any attack could have.
She felt the change before anything touched her. The deeper current beneath her golden power shifted slightly, not pushing outward, not retreating, but settling into a tense awareness. It felt like something inside her had gone still on purpose, waiting to see what would happen next instead of reacting blindly. That was new, and it made her chest tighten.
