The crack between them did not close.
It spread.
The moment Ariana's hand came close enough to Kael's to trigger that reaction, the entire wall of darkness between them began to fracture from the inside. Thin lines of light cut through it, uneven and unstable, like something inside the space was losing control of its own structure.
Ariana pressed her hand harder against the surface.
The gold under her skin flared.
The deeper current surged beneath it, not pulling her away, not fighting her, but answering the same direction she was pushing.
"Kael," she said, her voice tight. "It's breaking."
"I can see that."
On the other side, lightning struck again, sharp and focused. The impact split the wall wider, pieces of darkness breaking apart and dissolving into nothing before they could fall.
But the moment the gap widened, the pressure returned.
Hard.
The space reacted instantly, trying to seal the fracture before it could grow any further.
