Ariana stood where she was, trying to steady her breathing.
It did not work.
No matter how carefully she inhaled, no matter how slowly she let the air leave her lungs, her body refused to calm. The space around her felt too heavy, too aware, and something inside her would not settle.
It was not panic.
It was not fear the way she knew fear.
It felt different.
Quieter.
Deeper.
More certain.
Something had changed inside her.
It had not happened because she told it to. It had not happened because she had lost control. It had moved on its own, smooth and deliberate, like it had been waiting for a moment she did not even realize had arrived.
Her hand rose slowly to her chest.
She pressed her palm lightly against the fabric there, as if she could hold whatever it was in place.
As if she could stop it from spreading.
Nothing changed.
The feeling remained.
Not painful.
Not violent.
Just there.
Present in a way she could not ignore.
