Chapter 68 - The 19th Birthday party

AN: Big chapter with over 3k words. No cliffhangers this time. I tried to wrap it up in a single chapter.

The party venue sat directly along the waterfront, glowing against the Miami night like something pulled out of a movie set.

The entire rooftop had been transformed into a luxury open-air celebration. Glass railings wrapped around the edges overlooking the ocean while soft golden lights hung overhead between tall palm trees. A live band played near the center stage, shifting smoothly between modern pop songs and slower jazz instrumentals whenever conversations grew louder. Staff members moved through the crowd carrying trays of drinks and tiny expensive-looking appetizers nobody could pronounce correctly.

Near the back of the venue, a long infinity pool reflected the city lights stretching across the water. Private cabanas lined one side of the rooftop with white curtains drifting softly in the warm breeze. Cameras flashed every few seconds near the entrance as celebrities arrived one after another.

And in the middle of everything sat the birthday cake.

It was absurdly large.

Multiple layers rose upward like a wedding cake designed by someone with unlimited money and zero self-control. Gold detailing wrapped around the edges while tiny edible decorations shaped like film reels, books, crowns, and miniature lions covered the sides. A glowing number nineteen stood at the very top.

Luke stopped walking the second he saw it.

"How did they fit it through the door?"

Phil adjusted his blazer while staring around the rooftop with widening eyes. "Okay… wow. This party has rich people ice cubes."

Claire looked toward one of the bars where drinks were literally smoking from dry ice. "Please don't embarrass us in front of celebrities."

"Truth be told, I'm really nervous," Phil admitted honestly. "I've never been on the same rooftop with this many celebrities."

"Yeah, me too," Claire replied.

Alex was kinda busy keeping an eye on Luke and preventing him from doing anything stupid.

The Dunphy family moved further inside together, though it quickly became obvious they were feeling slightly out of place. Everyone around them looked polished, confident, and completely comfortable in this world of expensive dresses, famous faces, and conversations about movies making hundreds of millions of dollars.

Haley stayed close to Jack at first while guests constantly stopped him every few steps. She was wearing a blue party gown, and Jack was wearing a t-shirt and jeans. His father wanted him to wear a proper tux for tonight, but he said that it's his birthday, so he's going to wear something comfortable.

A producer shook his hand enthusiastically. "The Harry Potter books are unbelievable, Jack. My daughter made me read all of them and now I'm obsessed."

Another director laughed while holding a glass of champagne. "You somehow made the Ministry politics actually interesting. I still don't know how you pulled that off."

Jack smiled politely through all of it while shaking hands and thanking people one after another. "Glad you liked it."

Matthew Perry appeared a few minutes later, carrying a non-alcoholic drink while grinning already. "Look at you," he said while pulling Jack into a quick hug. "Nineteen years old and somehow more successful than the rest of us combined. Honestly rude behavior."

Jack laughed. "Good to see you too."

Leslie Mann walked over beside him and smiled warmly. "Happy birthday, sweetheart." Then she glanced toward Haley nearby. "And you must be Haley."

'Jack kissed her during that movie. It's kinda weird when you're talking to someone who's kissed your boyfriend.' Haley nodded politely. "Hi."

"Oh my God, you're adorable," Leslie said immediately. "Jack talks about you constantly."

Jack groaned quietly. "Please stop exposing me in public."

Michelle Trachtenberg laughed from nearby while sipping her drink. She was wearing a silver gown. "Too late. We all know you're whipped."

Haley's smile widened instantly while Jack looked personally betrayed.

"This party gets more dangerous every minute," he muttered.

After talking to them, they simply walked around with a smile on their faces.

"So, you always talk about me, huh?" Haley asked.

"More like brag," Jack said as he took her hand.

Not far away, Emma Stone, wearing a stunning red party gown, stood near the pool talking animatedly with Shailene Woodley while Skandar Keynes and Georgie Henley argued over whether the cake was physically too large to fit through normal doors.

"I'm telling you," Georgie said confidently, "they built the party around the cake."

Skandar pointed toward the center table. "That thing has structural support."

Tilda Swinton stood nearby, dressed elegantly in black while watching the argument unfold with complete seriousness. "I agree with Georgie. The cake arrived first."

Even Haley laughed at that one.

Still, despite the warmth from everyone around them, the Dunphys looked slightly overwhelmed. Phil kept pretending he totally belonged there while secretly staring at celebrities every few seconds. Claire remained composed on the outside, though even she looked stunned whenever another famous actor casually walked past holding champagne.

Alex leaned slightly toward Haley. "I feel like we accidentally walked into the Oscars."

Luke pointed toward a famous musician standing near the DJ booth. "That guy has three Grammys."

"You googled him already?" Alex asked.

"I'm collecting evidence for school."

Thankfully, Jack's parents noticed the discomfort almost immediately.

Jack's mother approached first, wearing a midnight blue dress while smiling warmly at Claire and Phil. "You all look a little overwhelmed."

Phil laughed nervously. "Is it that obvious?"

"A little," she admitted gently. "Come with me."

Jack's father joined them a moment later with two producers and a couple of models already beside him. "These are Haley's parents," he introduced naturally. "Phil and Claire Dunphy."

The producers and models immediately shook their hands politely.

"Your daughter has a very keen eye for unique fashion sense. Thanks to her advice on my dressing sense, I managed to win a fashion show on reality TV," One of the models said.

Claire and Phil felt proud of Haley.

"Your daughter's wonderful," one of them said. "Jack talks about her all the time."

Claire visibly relaxed a little after hearing that.

Phil smiled proudly. "Well, Haley definitely talks about him too. Mostly in complete sentences, which is how we knew it was serious."

That earned a few laughs.

From there, things slowly became easier.

Jack's parents naturally pulled the Dunphys into conversations, introducing them to actors, directors, writers, and producers without making it feel forced. Claire ended up discussing interior design with a celebrity couple near the pool. Phil somehow got trapped in an enthusiastic conversation about magic tricks with a comedian who genuinely seemed interested.

//Phil & Claire's Confession//

Phil and Claire sat side by side on the couch afterward, both still dressed from the party. Phil had loosened his collar slightly while Claire held one heel in her hand like her feet had officially given up twenty minutes ago.

Phil let out a long breath. "Okay… so for the first fifteen minutes, I genuinely thought security was going to remove us."

Claire nodded immediately. "Same."

Phil pointed toward her. "See? Thank you. Finally, honesty."

Claire adjusted slightly against the couch. "It was intimidating at first. Everyone there looked like they belonged in magazines or on giant movie posters."

"And they all somehow knew each other already," Phil added. "Like we walked into the world's most expensive high school reunion."

He paused, thinking back.

"One guy shook my hand and said, 'Loved your work.'"

Claire looked at him flatly. "He thought you were someone else."

Phil nodded slowly. "Probably. But for five seconds… I felt famous."

Claire laughed quietly and leaned back into the couch. "Honestly, the weirdest part was how normal everyone became after a while."

Phil agreed immediately. "Yeah. Once Jack's parents started introducing us around, it stopped feeling like this impossible celebrity thing."

"They made it easy," Claire admitted. "Nobody treated us like outsiders after that."

Phil smiled a little. "One producer asked me for real estate advice."

Claire stared at him for a second. "You gave him fake Miami facts."

"I improvised confidently."

"That's not better."

Phil ignored that completely. "Still counts."

Claire shook her head with a smile before her expression softened slightly.

"And Haley…" she said quietly.

Phil immediately grinned. "Oh yeah. Somebody was popular."

Claire nodded slowly, still sounding slightly surprised by it herself. "Everywhere we turned, somebody knew her already."

"She was walking around talking to actresses like it was normal."

"And not awkward either," Claire added. "She actually fit there. I'm so proud of her."

That part lingered for a second.

Phil's expression softened proudly. "Our little Haley."

Claire smiled faintly. "I kept waiting for her to panic or get insecure around all those people."

"But she didn't."

"No," Claire admitted. "She looked comfortable."

Phil leaned back with crossed arms. "That's because she's grown up."

Claire looked at him. "You almost cried saying that."

"I did not."

"You absolutely did."

Phil pointed dramatically. "My eyes were reacting emotionally to expensive candle smells."

Claire laughed again before shaking her head lightly.

"And honestly…" she admitted after a second, "seeing how people talked about her… seeing how Jack looks at her…"

Phil nodded knowingly.

"It's serious," Claire finished quietly. "Yeah, yeah, I know the things I've said before about them not lasting, but here we are..."

Phil smiled proudly like he had been waiting years to hear her say it out loud.

"Oh, we crossed serious a long time ago," he said. "At this point, I'm just mentally preparing for wedding speeches."

Claire immediately turned toward him. "Don't."

Phil gasped softly. "You think I haven't been writing material already?"

"Phil."

"I've got callbacks, emotional arcs, a possible magic finale…"

Claire closed her eyes briefly. "And there it is."

//Confession End//

Meanwhile, Luke disappeared toward the dessert table after discovering miniature burgers served on silver trays.

Alex stayed quieter, though even she seemed fascinated listening to a group of writers debating book adaptations near the lounge area. Then she made a comment about her opinion and within minutes, she was mingling with them.

Meanwhile, Haley found herself talking with several actresses she had already met before through Preston Boutique events.

Dakota pulled her into a conversation near the bar while Elle stood beside them holding colorful drinks.

"I swear Preston events are more stressful than movie premieres sometimes," Dakota complained dramatically.

Haley laughed. "At least nobody's wearing dragon wings this year."

"Oh my God," Elle groaned. "That woman almost hit me with them."

Willa smiled softly while standing beside them. "Your styling work's been getting really good lately, by the way."

Haley blinked. "Wait, seriously?"

"I'm serious," Willa nodded. "Jack showed us some photos from your recent layouts."

Haley immediately looked toward Jack across the rooftop.

He stood surrounded by actors and producers near the center lounge area, laughing at something Matthew Perry had just said while another director patted him on the shoulder. Even from a distance, people naturally gravitated toward him. Conversations shifted when he spoke. Industry veterans listened carefully when he gave opinions.

And somehow, despite all of that...

His eyes still searched for her in the crowd.

The second he found her near the bar, his expression softened instantly.

Haley smiled before she could stop herself.

Dakota caught it immediately and smirked. "Okay, yeah. You two are disgustingly in love."

Haley took a sip of her drink while trying not to grin too hard. "Maybe a little."

Across the venue, the music shifted louder while staff members began preparing near the massive cake.

Jack's father clapped a hand against his son's shoulder. "Ready for the birthday part of your birthday party?"

Jack glanced around at the crowd, the lights, the ocean behind them, and finally toward Haley again.

Then he smiled.

"Yeah," he said quietly. "I think I am."

Jack's father stepped up first with a microphone in hand, smiling out at the crowd. "Alright, everybody," he said warmly. "Before my son gets older and starts charging me consulting fees for conversations, let's celebrate his nineteenth birthday properly."

That earned a wave of laughter from the guests.

Jack shook his head while rubbing the back of his neck. "You rehearsed that."

"Absolutely," his father replied proudly.

The crowd parted slightly as Jack moved toward the cake. Haley stayed beside him naturally, her hand slipping into his for a second before she let go so people could take pictures.

"Speech," Matthew Perry shouted immediately from somewhere near the back.

"Oh no," Jack muttered under his breath.

"Yes!" Dakota yelled while raising her drink. "Embarrass yourself emotionally."

Jack sighed dramatically while accepting the microphone his father handed him. He looked around once at the crowd, the lights, the ocean behind everyone, then laughed softly to himself.

"Okay… first of all," he began, "who approved a cake this big? And how the hell did they fit it through that tiny door?"

That got a louder laugh from the crowd.

Jack smiled faintly before continuing. "Seriously though… thank you all for being here." His tone relaxed naturally after that. "The last few years have been kinda insane. Movies, books, traveling nonstop, trying to survive interviews without saying something stupid…"

Matthew Perry raised his glass. "Still a daily battle."

"Exactly," Jack pointed toward him. "But honestly, I've been lucky." His gaze shifted briefly toward his parents first. "Lucky to have family who believed in me before any of this stuff happened. It's like a second chance. They gave me full freedom, but I misused it and fell hard. I pulled myself up and it wasn't easy... I'm really grateful to them."

His mother smiled softly near the front while his father folded his arms proudly. They knew they messed up. Between a busy schedule and raising a kid, they gave more priority to their work, and somewhere in between that, Jack became rebellious, and they drifted apart. But things change, and people learn from their mistakes... All it takes is a little effort from both sides.

Jack looked toward Haley next, and his expression changed immediately without him realizing it.

"And lucky to have people around me who make all of this feel normal again," he said quietly.

Haley's cheeks warmed almost instantly under the attention.

Willa leaned toward Dakota and whispered loudly enough for nearby people to hear, "He's entering boyfriend speech territory."

"I hate all of you," Jack replied without looking away from the microphone.

The crowd laughed again.

He finally shook his head with a smile and lifted the microphone slightly. "Anyway… thank you for coming. Eat cake before Luke steals half of it."

"Too late," Luke announced proudly while already holding a plate.

The music swelled again as everyone started singing. Jack laughed through most of it while Haley stood beside him, grinning the entire time. When it finally came time to blow out the candles, he glanced sideways toward her.

"You're supposed to make a wish," she whispered.

Jack looked at her for half a second before smiling faintly. "Already got most of it."

Then he blew the candles out.

The crowd erupted into applause immediately afterward while cameras flashed across the rooftop again. Staff members quickly moved in to begin cutting slices while guests drifted back into conversations and laughter.

The rest of the night passed almost too quickly after that.

Dinner stretched across long candlelit tables overlooking the ocean. Plates kept appearing before anyone fully finished the previous one. Luke was having the best time of his life. Phil somehow ended up doing his magic tricks after the dinner; surprisingly, nobody got attacked by wildlife this time. And it was successful.

Then Beyoncé performed.

Haley spent the first thirty seconds staring in complete disbelief before grabbing Jack's arm hard enough to hurt him. "That is literally Beyoncé."

"I know," Jack laughed.

"Wow! I wasn't expecting this," She jumped into his arms. "I love it."

"Well, you wanted to go to another live show, so I thought, why not have a live performance here on my birthday?" Jack said as he wrapped his arms around her waist.

Haley kissed him. It was a small kiss. "You remembered?"

"Yep, I remember every moment I've spent with you," He said before kissing her back.

The performance turned the entire rooftop electric. Guests crowded near the stage while music rolled out across the water and city lights flickered behind everything like part of the show itself. Even Alex stopped pretending to be detached from the experience once the fireworks started later.

The fireworks exploded high above the ocean in waves of gold, blue, and silver while the crowd watched from the rooftop railings. Haley stood tucked against Jack's side with her head resting lightly against his shoulder as reflections shimmered across the water below.

For a while, neither of them said anything.

They just watched.

By the time the final fireworks faded, the party had softened into smaller conversations and quieter music. Guests slowly started leaving for their suites while staff members cleared glasses and dimmed parts of the rooftop lighting.

Eventually, Jack and Haley made their way back inside.

...

[Jack's room]

The moment the suite door opened, Haley stopped dead in the middle of the room.

"Oh my God."

The gifts had completely taken over the living area.

Boxes covered almost every table and half the couch. Designer bags sat stacked near the walls beside envelopes, flower arrangements, and wrapped packages large enough to contain furniture. A few handwritten cards rested on top of everything, like they had given up trying to compete for attention.

Luke would've passed out from excitement.

Haley walked further inside slowly, staring around the room. "This looks like Santa Claus got sponsored by billionaires."

Jack closed the door behind them while laughing quietly. "Pretty much."

One of the envelopes sitting near the table had a Bentley car company logo embossed in gold. Another clearly came from a private resort chain. There were watch boxes, framed artwork, expensive non-alcoholic drinks, and at least three velvet cases that probably contained jewelry or keys to something absurdly expensive.

Jack looked around at the chaos. Then his eyes drifted back toward Haley.

She stood there in her blue gown under the soft suite lighting, still looking slightly overwhelmed from the night, but happy in that quiet genuine way he always loved seeing.

'God, she looks gorgeous.'

For a second, he forgot about the gifts entirely.

Haley caught the look immediately and smiled softly. "What?"

"Nothing," he said easily, though the smile lingering on his face said otherwise.

She walked over toward the couch and picked up one of the envelopes curiously before glancing back at him again.

"Ready to open the gifts?" she asked.
