Chapter 34 - Chapter 18 — The First Demand

The army stopped at the edge of the forest.

Not because they respected it.

Because they feared what waited inside.

---

Thousands of soldiers stood ready.

Shields raised.

Spears prepared.

Mages positioned behind the front ranks.

---

A kingdom prepared for war.

Against one girl.

---

Elsa watched from the treeline.

Silent.

---

Jack stood nearby.

Rowan beside him.

Neither looked comfortable.

---

Because this wasn't a battlefield.

It was fear given form.

---

A rider emerged from the army.

White banner raised overhead.

---

Messenger.

---

Not an attack.

Not yet.

---

The rider stopped several dozen meters away.

Close enough to speak.

Far enough to run.

---

Smart.

---

He swallowed nervously before reading from a scroll.

---

"By order of His Majesty—"

---

Elsa already disliked where this was going.

---

"—the dragon-blood known as Elsa is hereby commanded to surrender herself for immediate confinement."

---

Silence.

---

The messenger continued.

---

"Compliance guarantees the safety of all civilians involved."

---

A pause.

---

"Resistance will be considered confirmation of hostile intent."

---

There it was.

---

The trap.

---

Surrender and become a prisoner forever.

Refuse and become proof they were right.

---

Either way—

The outcome was already decided.

---

The messenger finished reading.

---

The forest remained silent.

---

Then Elsa asked quietly—

---

"What happens after confinement?"

---

The messenger hesitated.

---

Because everyone knew.

---

Execution.

Eventually.

Quietly.

Officially.

---

But nobody wanted to say it aloud.

---

Finally—

The messenger lowered his gaze.

---

No answer.

---

That was answer enough.

---

Elsa laughed softly.

---

Not angry.

Not surprised.

---

Just disappointed.

---

"My father would've argued with this man for hours."

---

Rowan snorted.

---

Jack almost smiled.

---

The messenger looked confused.

---

Elsa stepped forward.

---

Her voice remained calm.

---

"I'm not surrendering."

---

The messenger's shoulders slumped.

As though he expected that answer.

---

"Then the army will advance."

---

Elsa nodded slowly.

---

"I know."

---

The rider stared at her for several moments.

---

Then quietly asked—

---

"...Why aren't you running?"

---

The question surprised everyone.

---

Especially the messenger himself.

---

Because it wasn't part of the script.

---

It was human.

---

Elsa looked toward the endless line of soldiers.

---

Then toward the kingdom beyond them.

---

Then toward the forest she had lived in.

---

The hut.

The graves.

The memories.

---

And finally she answered.

---

"I've spent my whole life running."

---

Silence.

---

"I'm tired."

---

The messenger lowered his head.

---

Because he understood.

---

Not the dragon blood.

Not the politics.

---

Just exhaustion.

---

A universal language.

---

He turned his horse and rode away.

---

Back toward the army.

Back toward the inevitable.

---

As the rider disappeared—

Another figure stepped from the army.

---

The spear warrior.

---

Alone.

---

No escort.

No guards.

No weapons drawn.

---

The army immediately became uneasy.

---

Because even they didn't know what he intended.

---

The old warrior walked forward slowly.

---

Step.

Step.

Step.

---

Until only a short distance separated him from Elsa.

---

For several moments—

Neither spoke.

---

The wind moved between them.

---

Then the spear warrior finally said—

---

"You look like her."

---

Elsa froze.

---

Jack's eyes widened.

---

Rowan immediately understood.

---

The old wound.

The old secret.

---

It had finally arrived.

---

Elsa's voice became very quiet.

---

"You knew my mother."

---

The spear warrior closed his eyes briefly.

---

Not denying it.

---

Not hiding it.

---

"I did."

---

The forest seemed to grow colder.

---

Elsa felt her heart beating harder.

---

Because some part of her already knew what came next.

---

The spear warrior opened his eyes.

---

Filled not with hatred.

Not with pride.

---

Regret.

---

"I was there the day she died."

---

Silence.

---

The entire world seemed to stop breathing.

---

Jack stared.

Rowan stared.

Even the distant soldiers seemed frozen.

---

Elsa didn't move.

---

Didn't blink.

---

Didn't breathe.

---

Because deep down—

She had waited years for this moment without realizing it.

---

The man before her.

---

The last witness.

---

The last connection to her mother.

---

And perhaps—

The man who took her away.

---

The spear warrior lowered his gaze.

---

For the first time in decades—

The legendary hero looked tired.

---

Very tired.

---

"I need to tell you the truth."

---

And for the first time since Edward's death—

Elsa felt something worse than anger.

---

Fear.

---

Because some truths change everything.
