The wind howled across the walls of Fort Edrin as Kaelan Var stepped into the training yard.
Two hundred soldiers stood waiting.
Not in perfect formation.
Not yet disciplined as a single unit.
They were divided—three separate patrol groups, each with their own habits, their own leaders, and their own loyalties.
Now, they all belonged to him.
Kaelan paused for a moment, studying them.
This was no longer a small patrol.
This was the beginning of an army.
Sergeant Dren stood at his side, arms crossed.
"They don't trust each other," Dren muttered.
Kaelan nodded.
"I can see that."
Different armor styles.
Different insignias.
Different commanders standing uneasily among the ranks.
Some soldiers whispered.
Others watched Kaelan carefully.
Waiting.
Judging.
Kaelan stepped forward.
The murmurs slowly died down.
"I am Kaelan Var," he said, voice steady.
"You've heard stories."
A few soldiers smirked.
Some nodded.
Kaelan continued.
"Some of those stories are true."
Silence fell completely now.
"But stories don't win wars."
He walked slowly in front of the formation.
"Discipline does."
He stopped.
"From this moment forward, you are not three units."
He looked across all two hundred men.
"You are one."
A veteran soldier stepped forward.
"With respect, commander…"
His tone carried challenge.
"These men don't fight the same way."
Kaelan met his gaze.
"Then they will learn."
The soldier hesitated.
Then stepped back.
Kaelan turned to the entire formation.
"Training begins now."
The first week was brutal.
Kaelan broke them down.
Then rebuilt them.
Marching drills from dawn until nightfall.
Formation changes.
Signal coordination.
Archers training alongside infantry.
Cavalry units learning to support foot soldiers.
At first, chaos.
Confusion.
Arguments.
But Kaelan remained relentless.
Mistakes were corrected immediately.
Discipline enforced without hesitation.
Dren handled the harsher side of command.
Kaelan handled the structure.
Slowly, the soldiers began to move as one.
Not perfectly.
But better.
Each day.
One evening, as the sun set behind the mountains, Kaelan gathered the unit commanders.
A rough map lay on the ground.
"This is our battlefield now," he said.
He pointed toward several villages.
"These are supply points used by Maroth."
Then to the mountain passes.
"These are his movement routes."
One of the commanders frowned.
"You're planning to attack all of them?"
Kaelan shook his head.
"No."
He pointed to three key locations.
"We take these."
Another commander spoke.
"And the rest?"
Kaelan's voice was calm.
"They fall on their own."
Dren grinned.
"Cut the head, the body dies."
Kaelan nodded slightly.
Exactly.
Two days later, the army moved out.
Two hundred soldiers marching through the mountains.
This time, no longer a patrol.
A force.
Kaelan divided them into three coordinated groups.
Each with a specific role.
Advance.
Flank.
Reserve.
Communication signals were clear.
Every movement planned.
They reached the first target at dawn.
A rebel-controlled supply village hidden deep in the valley.
Kaelan raised his hand.
The army stopped.
He studied the terrain carefully.
Guards posted at the entrance.
Watchers on rooftops.
Hidden fighters in nearby trees.
Maroth's influence was everywhere.
Kaelan turned to Dren.
"They're expecting us."
Dren shrugged.
"Good."
Kaelan smiled slightly.
"Yes."
"Let them expect the wrong thing."
The attack began quietly.
Archers eliminated the outer guards.
Then infantry moved in from two directions.
The rebels reacted quickly.
But too late.
The coordinated assault overwhelmed them.
Within minutes, the village was secured.
Minimal losses.
Efficient.
Controlled.
The soldiers noticed.
This was different from previous battles.
This was strategy.
By nightfall, Kaelan's army had taken the second location.
A hidden weapons depot.
The third fell the next day.
A mountain pass used by rebel scouts.
Three victories.
In three days.
Word spread quickly.
The soldiers began to believe.
Not just in survival.
But in victory.
That night, Kaelan stood alone overlooking the captured pass.
Dren approached quietly.
"You've changed them," he said.
Kaelan shook his head.
"No."
"They changed themselves."
Dren smirked.
"Don't be modest."
He looked toward the mountains.
"Maroth will hear about this."
Kaelan nodded.
"Yes."
Dren crossed his arms.
"And then?"
Kaelan's eyes hardened.
"Then he comes for us."
Far away, deep within the mountains…
Maroth listened to the reports in silence.
Three positions lost.
Supply routes cut.
His scouts killed.
His influence shrinking.
The rebel leader smiled slowly.
"So…"
He looked toward the darkness beyond the fire.
"The boy has become a commander."
One of his men asked carefully.
"What do we do?"
Maroth stood.
"We prepare."
He stepped toward a large map carved into stone.
"This time…"
His voice dropped.
"…we don't ambush a patrol."
His finger traced a path through the mountains.
"We destroy an army."
Back at the imperial camp, Kaelan stood before his soldiers the next morning.
Two hundred men.
Now standing in formation.
Together.
Stronger.
More disciplined.
Kaelan looked across them.
"This is only the beginning," he said.
"We have taken three positions."
He paused.
"But the war is not over."
The soldiers listened carefully.
"Maroth will respond."
Kaelan's voice grew colder.
"And when he does…"
He drew his sword slowly.
"…we will be ready."
The soldiers raised their weapons in response.
For the first time…
They did not see Kaelan as just a commander.
They saw him as a leader.
And somewhere in the mountains…
Two forces prepared for war.
One built on discipline.
One built on cunning.
The next battle would not be small.
It would not be quick.
It would decide who controlled the frontier.
Kaelan Var tightened his grip on his sword.
The path from soldier to something greater…
Had truly begun.
