Chapter 16 - The Word That Drew Blood

The photo was taken from forty meters outside the east wall.

Forty meters. In broad daylight. By someone who knew exactly where to stand to avoid the camera angles on the perimeter, which meant they had studied those angles. Which meant this was not casual. This was not someone walking past who happened to look over a wall.

This was deliberate surveillance.

I had the photo in my hand for thirty seconds before I made four calls, reassigned two patrols, and added a third rotation to the east perimeter. My security team moved without question. They knew the sound of my voice when a situation had changed.

What they did not know, what I did not say out loud, was that the thing tightening in my chest while I looked at that photo was not tactical.

It was something older and more dangerous than tactics.

It was fear.

I found her in the hallway outside her room twenty minutes later.
