Chapter 23 - Tunnel.

CHAPTER 23

The heavy door thudded shut, sealing out the roar of the flames and the distant, approaching sirens of the city's emergency services.

The sudden silence of the cabin was deafening. I slumped back into the leather, my body finally realizing it had been tossed through the air and singed by a fireball.

Damian slid in beside me, his movements stiff and measured. He didn't look at the burning wreckage as we peeled away; he was already focused on the man in the front passenger seat.

"Status on the perimeter," Damian clipped out, his voice returning to that cold, imperial tone that made it hard to believe he was currently covered in soot and dried blood.

"Clean for three blocks, Boss," Cassian replied, eyes fixed on a tablet. "But the grid is closing. We've got chatter from three separate tactical units moving toward the blast site. None of them are local PD."

"Shadows," I whispered. Damian didn't respond, but the tightening of his jaw was answer enough.
