Chapter 7 - When He said My Name

The reporters didn't stay long that day. By late afternoon, they had moved further down the street, questioning people near the grocery store and the town café. But the feeling they left behind lingered like a draft in an old house. Willowbrook suddenly felt like a place people were watching.

That evening at home, the conversation followed Selena. Julia was sitting on the couch, the blue light of her phone illuminating her face as Selena walked into the living room.

"You look tired," Julia said without looking up.

"Long day."

Julia turned her phone toward her suddenly. "Look at this."

Selena's stomach tightened at the sight of the headline. Sebastian McGrey.

"People online are saying he disappeared," Julia continued, her thumb scrolling rapidly. "Some think he's hiding somewhere."

Grandma glanced up from her knitting, the needles clicking rhythmically. "Hiding from what?"

Julia shrugged. "Business drama. Rich people problems."

Selena forced a small, hollow laugh. "Probably something like that."

But her thoughts were still back at the bookstore, anchored to the reporters and the man who had been reading quietly in the corner as if none of the chaos existed.

The weight of the previous day followed Selena as she walked to Ashton Park the next morning. Even the streets of Willowbrook felt different—less quiet, more watchful, as if every corner of the town was suddenly paying attention. Emilia was already inside when Selena unlocked the door, organizing a stack of newly arrived books with her usual calm efficiency.

"Good morning," Emilia said softly. She didn't look up, but Selena could feel her eyes—quiet and knowing. Emilia always had that look when she understood more than she let on.

"Morning," Selena murmured, forcing herself to focus on the counter instead of the racing thoughts in her chest.

Emilia didn't speak further; she only gave a slight nod and a faint smile. It was enough to let Selena know that she already knew about him, and why yesterday had felt so strange. Selena busied herself with the shelves, trying to steady the flutter in her stomach, when the bell above the door chimed softly.

She froze.

Slowly, she looked up.

He was there. Sebastian.

He stepped inside carefully, almost gliding across the wooden floor. His dark jacket was simple and unassuming, but the quiet confidence in his posture made him impossible to miss. It was the kind of presence that made the air feel heavier even when he said nothing. Emilia stepped slightly aside, giving them space without a word. Selena could see in her friend's eyes that she was letting the moment unfold naturally.

Selena swallowed hard. "You came back."

Sebastian's gaze swept toward the window first, scanning the street with careful, practiced precision. Then he looked back at her. "Jason called me," he said quietly.

The words made sense. It explained how he knew it was safe enough to enter without being noticed by the lingering eyes outside. Selena tried to steady her voice. "You were careful."

He allowed a small, almost imperceptible smile to touch his lips. "I've learned to be."

For a long moment, neither of us moved. The sunlight streaming through the tall windows caught the dust in the air, turning it into drifting gold. The bookstore felt smaller and cozier than ever, yet the world outside suddenly felt enormous and threatening.

"I saw the article," Selena finally whispered.

His gaze softened, and for a moment he looked tired—almost vulnerable. "I was hoping it wouldn't reach here."

Selena swallowed against the lump in her throat. "The reporters came yesterday. People are talking. They're asking questions."

He nodded slowly, as if acknowledging a truth she hadn't voiced aloud. "I know."

Silence filled the store, punctuated only by the faint ticking of the wall clock and the quiet shuffle of books on the shelves. Then he spoke, deliberately and softly, in a voice that made Selena's heart leap.

"Selena."

That one word carried a new weight. Intimacy. Recognition. It was something far beyond the casual conversations they'd had across the counter. Selena felt her world shift slightly, as if the act of him saying her name had changed the rules of everything.

Outside, a car passed slowly along Cedar Street. Sebastian glanced toward the window, then back at her.

"It seems my quiet place isn't so quiet anymore," he said softly.

And for the first time, Selena realized the moment she had been waiting for—the one that would make everything different—had finally arrived.
