Chapter 33: Johnny and Yosaku
The sun was rising on the horizon, casting a golden glow over the deck of the Going Merry. Luffy and Zoro stood facing each other, each holding a bamboo sword, the anticipation of their sparring match electrifying the air. Usopp watched from the sidelines, excitement gleaming in his eyes. He had always admired the skills and abilities of the strong and was eager to see this clash of titans.
"Ready, Zoro?" Luffy asked, a playful grin on his face.
Zoro smirked, adjusting his grip on the bamboo sword. "Always."
Their sparring session began with a flurry of movements. Luffy's strikes were swift and precise, drawing from the training he'd done on every island they'd visited and the instincts that came with this rubber body. Each blow was calculated, aiming to catch Zoro off guard. Zoro, on the other hand, relied on his own rigorous training from childhood and his experiences hunting pirates. He moved with a combination of brute strength and agile finesse, parrying Luffy's attacks with practiced ease.
The sound of bamboo clashing echoed across the deck as the two warriors engaged in a series of encounters. Luffy attempted a high strike, only for Zoro to duck and counter with a swift upward slash. Luffy leapt back, narrowly avoiding the hit, and immediately lunged forward again with a rapid thrust. Zoro sidestepped and swung his sword in a wide arc, forcing Luffy to retreat.
Each tried to catch the other off guard, their movements becoming more fluid and unpredictable. Luffy incorporated flips and aerial maneuvers, his agility making it difficult for Zoro to land a solid hit. Zoro, with his unwavering determination and brute force, managed to hold his ground, his strikes growing more powerful with each passing moment.
Eventually, both combatants paused, breathing heavily but smiling. The deck, though sturdy, had taken a few scuffs and scratches from their intense match.
"We should stop before we ruin our new ship," Luffy said, lowering his bamboo sword.
"Agreed," Zoro replied, wiping sweat from his brow. "I think I need a nap."
With that, Zoro climbed up to the crow's nest, settling in for a well-deserved rest. Usopp approached Luffy, his eyes gleaming with excitement. "Hey, Luffy! How about we try out the cannons?"
Luffy's eyes lit up. "Sure, why not!"
They moved to the side of the ship where the cannons were positioned, aiming them at a small protrusion of rocks in the distance. Their first few attempts were less than successful, the cannonballs splashing harmlessly into the sea. Usopp furrowed his brow in concentration, adjusting the aim and making calculations.
Finally, after several failed attempts, Usopp managed to hit the target, the cannonball striking the protrusion with a satisfying explosion. They cheered, their spirits high as midday approached.
"Let's break for lunch," Luffy suggested, his stomach rumbling.
The mention of food immediately roused Zoro from his nap. He climbed down from the crow's nest and joined Luffy, Usopp, and Nami in the kitchen. As they prepared their meal, Luffy and Usopp couldn't resist teasing Zoro about his frequent naps.
"You know, Zoro, if you sleep any more, we'll start thinking you're part bear," Usopp joked.
Zoro rolled his eyes but couldn't hide a small smile. "I'll let you know when I start hibernating."
The Going Merry sailed smoothly on the open sea, its flags proudly displaying the iconic Jolly Roger of the Straw Hat Pirates. The ship was a testament to their newfound unity and purpose, a symbol of the adventures that lay ahead.
Nami sat at the small table in the galley, pushing her food around her plate without really eating. Her eyes kept drifting to Luffy, who was demolishing his fourth serving of rice and fish like nothing in the world mattered except the next bite.
She hadn't been able to stop thinking about that night.
The way he'd held her. The way he'd listened. The way he'd kissed her like she was something precious instead of just another girl on another island. She'd felt safe. Really safe. For the first time in years.
But then morning came, and everything went back to normal.
Luffy was Luffy again. The pervert. The idiot. The captain who flirted without meaning it and laughed without thinking and treated her exactly the same as before. Like nothing had happened. Like she hadn't bared her soul to him in that tiny room.
It drove her crazy.
Not because she wanted him to be different. Not because she expected some big romantic gesture. Just... she wanted to talk about it. To know what it meant. To figure out where they stood.
But every time she tried to catch him alone, something got in the way. Training with Zoro. Cannons with Usopp. Food. Always food. And when she finally did get a moment, he'd smile that stupid grin and say something perverted and she'd want to hit him and kiss him at the same time.
So she sat at the table, not eating, and watched him eat, and tried to figure out what the hell she was supposed to do next.
---
Suddenly, the tranquility was shattered by the sound of splintering wood. A young man had pulled up alongside the Merry in a small boat and climbed aboard, his actions causing immediate chaos. He began destroying the ship's railing with a wild grin on his face.
"Hey, what do you think you're doing?" Luffy shouted, rushing out of the kitchen so quickly his straw hat almost flew off. He caught it just in time, his annoyance growing with each piece of wood the intruder broke.
Nami and Usopp followed closely behind, watching in shock as the young man continued his rampage. Luffy was about to punch the intruder when Zoro called out, recognizing him.
"Yosaku!"
The young man paused, his face lighting up with recognition. "Zoro! It's been a while!"
The tension eased as the crew gathered around, listening to Yosaku's tale. He explained how he had been searching for Zoro and introduced his companion, Johnny, who was temporarily cured of his scurvy thanks to the crew's help.
"We need to find a cook," Nami said, emphasizing the importance of proper nutrition on the seas. "Without one, we'll be in trouble."
Luffy nodded. "I'm a decent cook, but I'm not exactly trained. We need someone who knows what they're doing."
Johnny, grateful for their assistance, offered to help them find a cook. He pointed out the area where the best cooks in the East Blue could be found. "I know just the place. Follow me, and we'll find you a great cook."
As they prepared to set off, Yosaku made a move to catch up with Zoro, but Luffy stopped him, pointing to the damaged railing. "Before you go anywhere, you need to fix what you broke."
Yosaku grumbled but complied, muttering to himself as he worked on repairing the railing. Zoro returned to the lookout, his thoughts drifting to his earlier sparring session with Luffy. He pondered Luffy's abilities, recognizing his strength, speed, and agility. Despite his reluctant acceptance, Zoro couldn't help but feel curious about Luffy's true potential in a serious fight.
Meanwhile, in the kitchen, Luffy sat at a table, engrossed in a book. Next to him were five other books, all about general knowledge of this world. Nami glanced up from her maps, puzzled by Luffy's sudden interest in reading.
"What's with the books?" she asked, her curiosity piqued. "I didn't take you for the reading type."
Luffy looked up, a sheepish smile on his face. "I realized I was too focused on my training to really learn much about the world. I want to catch up."
In reality, he was Ethan Cole, a man who had died and woken up in Luffy's body. The knowledge he sought was crucial for navigating this new life and understanding the complexities of the world around him. Nami nodded, a hint of admiration in her eyes as she returned to her maps.
But her mind wasn't on the maps. It was on him. On the way his brow furrowed when he read something difficult. On the way he'd glance up and catch her looking and grin like he knew a secret. On the way he hadn't once, all day, tried to be alone with her.
---
The first rays of dawn painted the sky with hues of pink and orange as Nami stirred from her sleep. The gentle rocking of the Going Merry and the soft sounds of the sea provided a serene backdrop as she made her way to the deck. To her surprise, she found Luffy standing alone, gazing out into the horizon.
This was her chance.
She'd been waiting all day yesterday, and then all night, and now here he was. Alone. No Zoro. No Usopp. No Yosaku or Johnny. Just him and the sunrise.
She walked toward him, her heart pounding in a way that was becoming familiar. Annoying, but familiar.
"Morning," she said, stopping beside him at the railing.
Luffy turned, and that grin spread across his face. The one that made her want to hit him. "Morning, Nami. Sleep good?"
"No," she said flatly. "I didn't."
He tilted his head, confused. "Why not?"
She took a deep breath. This was it. She was just going to say it.
"Because I've been thinking about that night. The night in your room. And I've been trying to talk to you about it all day yesterday, but you were too busy training and shooting cannons and reading books to even notice."
Luffy's grin faded. He looked at her, really looked, and something in his eyes shifted. The idiot was gone. The pervert was gone. Just him.
"I noticed," he said quietly.
"Then why didn't you say anything?"
"Because I didn't know what to say." He turned back to the horizon. "I'm not good at this stuff. Talking. Feelings. All of it. I thought maybe you needed space. That night was... big. I have experience with women but you don't. I told you I am not trying to rush any of this."
Nami stared at him. Of all the things she'd expected, that wasn't it.
"You thought I needed space," she repeated.
"Yeah."
"So instead of talking to me, you just... ignored me?"
"I didn't ignore you. I was around. I just wasn't..."
"Wasn't what?"
He ran a hand through his hair, frustrated. "Wasn't trying to be alone with you. Because I didn't want you to think that's all I wanted. That night wasn't about that. It was about you. About us. About whatever this is." He gestured vaguely between them. "And I didn't want to mess it up by being... me. Do you know how hard it was for me to be with you that night without being me? How much I wanted things to progress? I know it was good and all but still, I'm a man."
Nami felt something crack inside her chest. Not in a bad way. In a way that let light in.
"You're an idiot," she said.
"I know."
"A complete idiot."
"I know."
"The biggest idiot in the East Blue."
"Probably."
She stepped closer, close enough to touch. "I didn't want space. I wanted you. I wanted to talk to you. I wanted to be near you. I wanted to figure out what this means instead of just pretending it didn't happen."
Luffy looked at her, and there it was again. That vulnerability. That fear. The same thing she felt.
"I've never done this before. Not really. Not with someone who matters."
Nami's eyes stung. "Me neither."
They stood there for a moment, the sunrise painting them gold, the sea stretching out endless in every direction.
Then Luffy reached out and took her hand.
"I don't know what I'm doing," he said. "But I know I want you here. On this ship. In my life. However that works. I'll figure it out."
Nami squeezed his hand. "That's all I needed. Just... don't disappear on me. Don't act like nothing happened. I can handle the perverted comments and the stupid jokes. I can't handle being invisible."
Luffy's grin returned, softer this time. "You're not invisible. Trust me. You're the least invisible person I've ever met."
She laughed, and it felt like the first real laugh in days. "That doesn't even make sense."
"Nothing about me makes sense. You said so yourself."
She leaned into him, her head against his shoulder, and they watched the sunrise together. No words. Just presence. Just two people who'd been alone too long, finally not alone anymore.
The moment stretched, perfect and quiet.
Then Luffy's stomach growled loud enough to wake the dead.
Nami burst out laughing. "Seriously?"
"I'm hungry," he protested. "It's morning. People get hungry in the morning."
She pulled back, still laughing, and looked at him. The idiot was back. The pervert was back. But underneath it all, there was something real. Something that was just for her.
"Come on," she said, tugging his hand. "Let's get breakfast. And after that, we're going to talk about Arlong. About what happens next. About all of it."
Luffy nodded, serious again. "Okay."
"And then you're going to train with Zoro and I'm going to navigate and we're going to act normal, because apparently that's what we do."
"Okay."
"But tonight," she said, meeting his eyes, "you're mine. No books. No training. Just us. Talking. Or not talking. I don't care. Just... together."
Luffy's smile was the warmest she'd ever seen it.
"Okay."
They walked toward the galley, hand in hand, and behind them the sun continued its climb, lighting the way toward whatever came next.
---
A few hours later, the silhouette of a grand ship appeared on the horizon.
The Baratie was unlike anything they had seen before. It was a massive floating restaurant, its structure resembling a giant fish with intricately designed windows and vibrant colors. The sight of it brought excitement to the crew, especially to Yosaku, who had fully recovered from his scurvy and was eager to enjoy a hearty meal.
As they drew closer to the Baratie, their excitement was abruptly overshadowed by the looming presence of a massive marine warship. The tension on the deck of the Merry was palpable as they observed the warship's imposing figure.
A tall, confident man stepped onto the deck of the marine ship. He was Fullbody, a Marine Lieutenant with a reputation for being both arrogant and flamboyant. By his side was a stunning woman in a purple dress, her beauty drawing the eyes of everyone on the Merry.
Nami glanced at Luffy, who was watching the warship with an expression she couldn't quite read.
"Trouble?" she asked quietly.
Luffy shrugged. "Maybe. Doesn't matter."
"You're not worried?"
He looked at her, and that grin returned. The confident one. The one that said he'd faced worse and won.
"Nah. We've got a cook to find."
