Henrik himself did not have any survival knowledge.
If he ran into the woods while trying to run away, when night came, he would be easy prey from the monsters. He would be dead by morning.
These are only the few instances of the ways Henrik had died.
And he did not wish it on anybody.
He saw the forest but who's to say that entering the forest would give him safety.
Henrik is not as rash as he was before.
Even if he wanted to run, he needs to understand whether it is feasible to run or not
He needs to secure a route. He needs to know where the enemies are stationed. And he also has to know the situation in this place.
What kingdom or duchy or barony is this?
Is everywhere plagued with war? And what about plague
When one think of the medieval world, one think of diseases.
Diseases and plagues.
And he made his judgement quickly when he thinks about all of these factors.
No, it is not feasible for him to try to run.
First, if he came down from the hill and join the main force, and then he ran to the forest, there is many possibilities that would lead him to another death
There is a high chance that he would be executed for deserting.
There is also a great chance that he would meet the enemy army and would be killed.
The other side, the main force is chaotic and looking from above, it is hard to distinguish who is foe and who is allies.
And not to mention, even if he successfully escapes, if the royal army wins quickly, then when they cleared up the battlefield, they will hunt for stragglers and deserters.
Four legs are better than two.
If the noble army won, their cavalry could easily catch up to him in the forest.
And the most terrifying possibility is that the closest forest he saw….is there no ambush there?
Henrik knows that he is being too paranoid here.
They might not be any ambushes hiding.
But it is better to think of such things. After all, in medieval war, there were many times where there is such an ambush method
And since he did not know much, he should think much
He looks up and then saw the sun
"What a beautiful day!" he said with a sigh.
It is so beautiful. Yet the day is full of death.
But in the distance, he could see dark clouds.
Before, he felt that everything was dark and gloomy.
But maybe that is because he is trapped in such a situation, that everything felt dark.
Now that he is out of danger and standing here, on top of this mound of hill, looking at the sun, it is still shining bright
One of the youths suddenly said
"It is about to rain" Miklos and Henrik both turned their gaze to a person.
Henrik look at this person. This person is young. Probably the same age as him. There is not even a beard on his chin
And this young guy is looking at the sky. Miklos on the other hand narrows his eyes. From the very beginning he doesn't like this person at all
There is just something about him that rubbed him wrong.
"Who are you? You are not a person of Matra"
"The name Matthias"
Miklos could not help but feel weirded out by this person. Maybe, it is the way he looks at him.
This young boy wears a leather armour.
The leather armours itself seem cut and there is dried blood on it. When one looks at it, most of his items seems to be in dry blood.
Miklos knew what it meant
These are loot. He did not care about that. He cares that the way he acted is unlike any other person he saw
He did not know how to verbalize it. He just felt a bit off. He is young and skinny, his hand is coarse and rough
There are some wounds on his cheeks but other than that he is quite healthy. Miklos then shakes his head and ask him a question
"What is your position?"
"Just a porter" Miklos eyes narrow.
this is the other boy who was calm the whole time.
He was running with them.
There is no particular talent, but he was eerily calm. And even now, looking at the distance, this boy that called himself Matthias is calm
"You said it is going to rain?" Henrik suddenly said. Unlike Miklos, he did not notice anything weird about this kid other than he is calm.
But some people deal with things differently.
Some people panicked and some people become exceedingly cold in their actions, like some kind of rationality overlord. A way to survive
And sometimes as a method of coping Henrik is not here to assess people mental health.
What makes him feel intrigues is that Matthias said it would rain
Matthias look at Henrik and nodded
"I know when it would rain"
Henrik look at the sky and he did not see any particularly thick concentration of clouds.
Though, to be honest, he did not really know how to determine whether a place is going to rain or not
Most of the time, he would only watch the weather forecast and decide whether to bring an umbrella or not
Henrik doesn't know whether it would rain or not. And he does not know whether rain would help his forces or the enemy forces.
There are too many things he did not know
"I thought after escaping that squire, I would be free. But it seems my day would not end easily"
The sun is still high in the sky, but everything seems to be filled with smokes.
He knows this is juts his feeling.
Now that he stands at a higher place, and after he had managed to clinch not one but two victory, he feels like his eyes opened up a bit and he could see things he could not see before
Now, he thought again and he sees how the sun is high up in the sky, and the sunlight shines all over them
The sun did not shine this brightly before.
It is not only because the place where he fights before is shrouded by the hills, but it is also because the sun was not that high and probably the clouds direction also plays a part in this matter.
He scanned the field and then his eyes narrowed
"Is that place feasible?" he thought for a moment.
Behind him, are a dozen of people that also rush to the hills. Some were already here from the beginning.
Some of them regrouped here.
Henrik did not notice this. Instead, he is looking all around, from left to right trying to see anything that could give him some sense of security
And on the other side Henrik notices some peasants are running on the hills.
Some run down to the other side and join the main force.
While some are shooting arrows from this area.
This hill must also be protected.
They however had come around a part of the hill that is unprotected?
Henrik look around and then as he looks left and right, his face turns bitter.
He saw a couple of bodies on the makeshift ditch. There are some people who wears the same kind of clothes like him and some other people who wears armours.
"There must be a fight there. The main force would not allow the forces of the royal army from the forest to breach them and take the hills here"
While climbing this hill from Henrik position before would not take too much time, to climb to this area from the direction of the main force requires considerable time and energy.
Though, Henrik knows that if not for Miklos he would not know about this hill. He was too preoccupied in fighting before and before he defeated that squire, he did not explore the area that deep.
As for the one time he did try to run, he runs on flat ground and rush on a different direction
There is a reason for this
Henrik pinch himself
"This is not the time to review mistakes" then he focused back and look at the hills as his eyes narrows.
This place is hard to take from the area of the main force
Because it is steeper and taller from the other side. And then one must jump down from the other side to reach this area.
The position is well chosen.
"Miklos what do you think? If we fortify the area below, could we make sure that we survive for today?"
If he did not know he would ask.
To let him Henrik who does not understand whether his strategy is right or not, whether his judgement about medieval warfare is right or not, it is better to ask someone who knows
And from what he sees, Miklos is a leadership material.
Miklos himself did not know the answer and for a few second, he was stumped. Yes, when one think about it, he was the one leading everyone to this area
He is not the oldest, but he seems the most reliable. Miklos appreciated Henrik ability to fight but he is after all a kid.
He probably did not understand certain things.
Even he did not understand.
Strategy is learned from books and Miklos did not know how to read
But he does know something
