Chapter 12 - Chapter–12– The Feeling of Being Watched

Morning arrives quietly… almost too quietly.

The sky stretches across Yokohama in soft hues of pale blue and fading orange, as if the world is trying to convince itself that everything is normal. Birds chirp lazily on rooftops. A distant train hums through the city. The scent of fresh bread drifts from a nearby bakery.

Everything feels peaceful.

But to Fumiko… it feels wrong.

She walks down the street with her schoolbag resting against her shoulder, her steps slow, careful, like someone navigating a place that no longer feels safe.

Her eyes don't stay still.

They move.

From the alley to the rooftops.

From passing strangers to the shadows behind them.

From reflections in glass windows… to the spaces where reflections should be.

Her fingers tighten slightly around the strap of her bag.

'Someone's watching me...'

The thought doesn't come suddenly.

It has been there since last night… growing quietly like a crack spreading through glass.

Her mind drifts back.

The nightmare.

The blood.

The hands dragging her down.

The suffocating grip around her throat.

Her breathing unconsciously grows shallow.

Then

The cat.

White fur.

One silver eye. One crimson.

And that strange… calm.

Her steps slow.

Her gaze shifts toward the rooftops again.

"...Are you here?"

she murmurs under her breath, almost without realizing.

A passing cyclist rings their bell, snapping her slightly out of it. She blinks, straightening.

"Get a grip… it's just your imagination,"

she whispers to herself.

But her heart doesn't believe it.

As she approaches the bus stop, she finds herself scanning the area again,

more carefully this time.

Behind the vending machine.

Near the electric pole.

Under the bench.

Nothing.

And yet

That feeling remains.

"What are you looking for?"

The voice comes so suddenly that Fumiko flinches hard.

She turns quickly–

"AMI?!"

Ami stands there with one eyebrow raised, arms loosely crossed, clearly amused.

"You were scanning the ground like you dropped treasure or something,"

she says, tilting her head.

Fumiko exhales, forcing a small laugh.

"Ah… no, nothing. I was just… looking at the weather."

Ami slowly looks up at the sky… then back down at the pavement.

"...Since when did the sky fall down here?"

There's a brief pause.

Then

Both of them burst into laughter.

The sound feels light… normal… grounding.

For a moment, the tension inside Fumiko loosens.

"You're acting weird today,"

Ami adds casually, adjusting her bag.

Fumiko looks away.

"Am I?"

"A little,"

Ami shrugs.

"But it's kinda cute, so I'll allow it."

Fumiko rolls her eyes, but a small smile slips through.

They start walking together toward school.

Their footsteps fall into rhythm.

Their conversation drifts from random gossip to homework complaints to teachers they both secretly dislike.

Normal things.

Simple things.

Things Fumiko clings to.

But even as she laughs…

Her eyes still move.

Still searching.

Still expecting something to appear where it shouldn't.

"Why can't I relax…?"

---

At School

The moment they step inside, the world shifts again.

The corridors buzz with energy, lockers slamming, voices echoing, shoes squeaking against polished floors.

Life. Noise. Movement.

It should feel comforting.

Instead, it feels overwhelming.

Fumiko stands at her locker, placing her books inside with slightly stiff movements.

Her ears pick up fragments of conversation nearby.

"...another accident last night"

"...no explanation again"

"...power outage this time"

Her hands freeze mid-motion.

Her heartbeat picks up.

'Again…?'

"Lost in your thoughts?"

A voice cuts in suddenly.

Fumiko nearly drops her notebook.

She turns

"Ami! Seriously!! stop doing that!"

Ami grins.

"What? You scare way too easily."

"I did NOT get scared!"

Fumiko snaps quickly, cheeks slightly pink.

"Oh? Really?"

Ami leans closer, teasing.

"Then why did you jump like a horror movie character?"

Fumiko looks away, embarrassed.

"You're annoying."

A soft chuckle escapes from behind them.

"What's going on this early in the morning?"

Rin appears, hands in her pockets, calm as always.

Beside her, Yuki practically bounces with energy.

"Tell me too! Tell me too!"

Yuki leans forward eagerly.

"Sorry,"

Ami smirks.

"Limited edition joke. You missed it."

"NOOO!"

Yuki dramatically clutches her chest.

"You're so mean!"

Fumiko laughs.

A real laugh.

For a moment… everything feels okay again.

The bell rings.

The hallway empties like a wave pulling back.

"See you at recess,"

Rin says, giving a lazy wave.

"Don't die in class,"

Yuki adds cheerfully.

"...Why would I die?"

Fumiko mutters.

"Motivation,"

Yuki beams.

--

In Class

The classroom settles into quiet.

The scratching of chalk fills the air as the teacher writes on the board.

Students scribble notes.

Pages flip.

Time moves.

But not for Fumiko.

Her pen hovers above her notebook.

Unmoving.

Her mind drifts again.

Back to the nightmare.

Back to the cat.

Back to the feeling.

'That wasn't just a dream.'

Her fingers tremble slightly.

"Fumiko."

No response.

"Fumiko."

Still nothing.

"FUMIKO!"

She jolts upright.

"Y-Yes?!"

The entire class looks at her.

The teacher sighs.

"Care to join us back in reality?"

A few students chuckle.

Fumiko lowers her head slightly.

"S-sorry, ma'am…"

"Then prove it by writing the notes."

"Yes, ma'am…"

She forces her hand to move.

But even as she writes…

Her thoughts don't stop.

From the seat beside her, Ami watches quietly.

Her playful expression is gone.

Replaced with concern.

--

In Recess

The cafeteria hums with noise.

Plates clatter. Voices overlap. The smell of food fills the air.

Fumiko sits with her friends, her tray untouched.

Rin scrolls through her phone.

"These accidents are increasing,"

she mutters.

Ami leans her cheek on her hand.

"Yeah… it's getting weird."

Yuki barely looks up, too busy eating.

"Mmm...maybe it's like a movie plot! Something supernatural!"

"Or you're just watching too many dramas,"

Rin replies dryly.

Ami glances at Fumiko.

She hasn't eaten a single bite.

"Fumiko."

Her voice is softer now.

"Something's wrong, right?"

Fumiko freezes.

Her chopsticks hover mid-air.

Rin looks up.

Yuki pauses.

The atmosphere shifts.

"Just what?"

Rin asks more seriously.

Fumiko hesitates.

Her chest tightens.

'Should I tell them?'

No.

They won't believe her.

But the words slip out anyway.

"...It's about a cat."

Silence.

Rin blinks.

"You wanna adopt one, since when you became a cat person, Fumi?"

Yuki gasps.

"YES! Let's all get matching cats!"

Fumiko shakes her head quickly.

"No! It's not like that!! it's just…"

"GUYS!!!"

Yuki suddenly slams her phone on the table.

Energy explodes back into the group.

"New karaoke place just opened!! We're going after school!"

The tension shatters instantly.

Rin sighs.

"Of course we are."

Ami laughs.

"I'm in."

All eyes turn to Fumiko.

She hesitates… just for a second.

Then she smiles.

"Yeah… let's go."

And just like that

Normal life resumes.

But inside her…

The unease doesn't leave.

---

After School

The final bell rings.

Students flood out like a river breaking through a dam.

Fumiko walks with her friends, their laughter filling the air.

Plans. Songs. Teasing.

Everything feels light again.

Then

Thunk.

"Ow–!"

Fumiko flinches, rubbing her head.

"What happened?"

Ami asks immediately.

Fumiko looks around.

Nothing.

No object. No one nearby.

"...Weird."

"You okay?"

Ami presses.

Fumiko forces a smile.

"Yeah… probably just something random."

But her eyes scan the ground again.

Searching.

And for a brief moment

She feels it again.

That presence.

Watching.

Waiting.

They walk away.

Their voices fade into the distance.

After They Leave

The field behind the school grows quiet.

Too quiet.

The wind moves slowly through the grass.

The sunlight dims… just slightly.

Then–

A faint glow appears.

Half-buried in the grass…

Something pulses.

Dark.

Alive.

The ground trembles.

Just a little.

Almost unnoticeable.

A thin crack forms beneath it.

Spreading slowly.

Silently.

And from within that crack

Something begins to breathe.
