Chapter 32 - Controlled Pressure

Morning came faster than Kai expected.

The moment his eyes opened, the faint ache from yesterday's hunts reminded him that even with system enhancements, his body still had limits. Not painful—just enough to remind him he wasn't invincible.

He sat up slowly.

The room was quiet.

Outside, the academy courtyard was already active again.

Students training.

Weapons clashing.

Instructors shouting.

Kai stood and stretched. The Endurance Reinforcement upgrade had done its job—his recovery was faster than normal, but not instant.

The system appeared briefly.

SYSTEM STATUS

XP: 3,702

Reward Points: 515 RP

Kai paused slightly.

That was… higher than expected.

He must have accumulated more RP during the night hunts and efficiency bonuses.

But he didn't open the shop.

Not yet.

He needed to understand his current limits first.

Spending RP blindly would slow him down later.

Kai stepped out into the hallway and made his way toward the courtyard.

Training Grounds

The moment he stepped outside, the noise hit him.

Students sparring.

Groups running drills.

Weapon clashes echoing across the stone.

The Great 17 were already gathered near one of the larger training circles.

Marcus was mid-swing, slamming a practice blade into a reinforced dummy.

"Again!" an instructor shouted.

Marcus grinned.

"I didn't stop!"

Kairo sat nearby, watching with amusement.

"You never stop."

Victor stood with Lena, both practicing controlled strikes against each other.

Clean.

Efficient.

No wasted movement.

Aiden stood at the center of another circle, facing three upper-ranked students.

Outnumbered.

But calm.

Kai walked over quietly.

Marcus noticed him first.

"There he is."

Kairo smirked.

"Forest ghost returns."

Kai ignored the comment.

Victor glanced at him.

"Morning."

Kai nodded.

"Morning."

Lena studied him briefly.

"You trained last night."

It wasn't a question.

Kai gave a simple answer.

"Some."

Marcus laughed.

"Some?"

Kairo shook his head.

"You're not fooling anyone."

Aiden stepped away from his group.

The three students he had been sparring against looked exhausted.

He walked toward Kai.

"We're doing controlled combat today," Aiden said.

"Multiple targets. No full power."

Kai nodded.

That matched what he needed.

Instructor Halvern

Halvern stepped forward again.

"Today's focus," he said, voice cutting through the noise, "is pressure."

The courtyard quieted slightly.

"You will fight against multiple opponents."

He paused.

"But you will not overwhelm them."

Marcus frowned.

"What?"

Halvern looked at him.

"You will learn control."

Kairo chuckled.

"That's aimed at you."

Marcus rolled his eyes.

Halvern continued.

"Groups of three."

His gaze shifted.

"Aiden."

Aiden nodded.

"You'll rotate."

Then Halvern pointed.

"Kai."

Kai stepped forward.

"Three opponents."

Kai didn't react outwardly.

But inside—

This was perfect.

The Fight Begins

Three upper-ranked students stepped into the circle.

Not weak.

Not inexperienced.

But not on the level of the Great 17.

Kai stepped in.

Wooden sword in hand.

Calm.

Halvern raised his hand.

"Begin."

The three moved immediately.

One from the front.

Two from the sides.

Kai activated Hybrid Vision Deep Scan for a fraction of a second.

Three movement patterns overlapped.

Attack angles.

Timing windows.

Weak points.

He turned it off instantly.

No one noticed.

The first strike came fast.

Kai stepped slightly to the side.

Not a full dodge.

Just enough.

The second attacker swung.

Kai raised his blade.

Clack.

He redirected the strike—not blocked.

The third came in from behind.

Kai stepped forward instead of turning.

The attack missed him completely.

Marcus leaned forward.

"Oh."

Kairo smirked.

"He's reading them."

Kai moved.

One strike.

Not hard.

Precise.

The first opponent stumbled back.

Not out—but off balance.

Kai repositioned.

Second attacker lunged.

Kai pivoted.

Blade tapped his wrist.

Controlled.

Minimal force.

The third hesitated for half a second.

That was enough.

Kai stepped in.

Tapped his shoulder.

Three movements.

Three controlled hits.

Halvern's voice cut in.

"Continue."

The fight didn't stop.

Now they adjusted.

More cautious.

More coordinated.

Kai activated Hybrid Vision again—briefly.

Now he saw something new.

Not just individuals—

But their combined movement pattern.

How one created openings for the others.

How they were trying to trap him.

Kai's eyes narrowed slightly.

He stepped back.

Let them close in.

Marcus whispered.

"He's letting them surround him?"

Kairo tilted his head.

"Watch."

All three attacked at once.

Kai moved.

Not fast.

Not explosive.

Efficient.

One step.

Turn.

Deflect.

Slip.

Strike.

All three attacks missed.

Kai tapped two of them almost instantly.

The third barely blocked.

But stumbled.

Halvern raised his hand.

"Stop."

Silence.

The three students stepped back, breathing heavier.

Kai stood still.

Calm.

Unbothered.

After the Fight

Halvern looked at Kai.

"You adapted."

Kai nodded.

Halvern continued.

"You're not stronger than them physically."

Kai didn't respond.

"Yet you controlled the fight."

A small pause.

"Good."

That was high praise.

Marcus walked over.

"That was clean."

Kairo nodded.

"You didn't even rush."

Victor added,

"You controlled spacing well."

Lena crossed her arms.

"You're improving faster than expected."

Kai shrugged slightly.

Aiden stepped closer.

"You're starting to see multiple angles."

Kai met his gaze.

"Yes."

Aiden nodded once.

"Keep doing that."

System Notification

The system appeared.

SYSTEM QUEST COMPLETED

Multi-Opponent Control

Rewards:

+50 XP

+60 RP

Kai dismissed it quietly.

Second Round — Increased Pressure

Halvern didn't give them long.

"Again."

This time—

Four opponents.

Kai stepped forward again.

This would push him further.

The fight began.

This time—

More aggressive.

Less hesitation.

Kai activated Hybrid Vision Deep Scan longer than before.

The world shifted.

Four bodies.

Four attack paths.

Four timing sequences.

Everything overlapped.

For a brief moment—

It was overwhelming.

Too much information.

Kai immediately reduced usage.

Focused only on movement prediction.

Not full analysis.

That stabilized it.

He moved.

Not perfectly this time.

One strike grazed his shoulder.

Another forced him back.

Marcus grinned.

"There we go."

Kai adjusted.

Breathing steady.

Focus narrowed.

He didn't try to control everything.

Just enough.

One opponent overextended.

Kai stepped in.

Strike.

Second followed.

Kai turned.

Deflect.

Third hesitated.

Kai punished that.

Fourth came from behind—

Kai stepped sideways at the last second.

Barely avoided it.

But enough.

Halvern raised his hand again.

"Stop."

Kai exhaled slowly.

That one—

Was harder.

Evaluation

Halvern looked at him.

"You relied too much on prediction at first."

Kai nodded.

"You adjusted."

Another pause.

"Better."

End of Session

The training ended shortly after.

Students began dispersing.

Marcus stretched.

"That was actually fun."

Kairo laughed.

"You almost lost."

Marcus smirked.

"Almost doesn't count."

Victor looked at Kai.

"You're getting used to multiple opponents."

Kai nodded.

"Still adjusting."

Lena added,

"You didn't panic when it got messy."

Kai didn't respond.

Aiden spoke last.

"That's the difference."

Kai glanced at him.

Aiden continued,

"Anyone can fight when it's clean."

A pause.

"Not everyone can when it isn't."

Kai understood.

Final System Update

As Kai walked away toward the dorms, the system appeared again.

SYSTEM UPDATE

Hybrid Vision Efficiency Stabilized: 98%

New Passive Enhancement:

Selective Processing

Allows filtering of unnecessary combat data during multi-target scenarios.

Kai stopped briefly.

That—

Was important.

It meant he wouldn't get overwhelmed again.

He dismissed the screen.

And kept walking.

The academy continued around him.

Training.

Voices.

Movement.

Everything normal.

But his control—

Had just taken another step forward.
