Chapter 19 - Chapter 19

Covenant of Error

Chapter 19 – Afterecho

---

After the magic circle shut down—

The stone ring returned to silence.

No light.

No fluctuations.

As if it had never been activated.

---

But the atmosphere had changed.

---

Lira was the first to notice.

"The pressure… it's gone."

---

Elias was still looking at Rei.

Not to check for injuries.

But to confirm something else.

"Have you… changed?"

---

Rei performed a quick check.

Heart rate: stable.

Body structure: unchanged.

Magic core: slight fluctuation but within safe limits.

---

"… No direct changes detected."

---

Elias did not relax.

He knew—

Not all changes can be measured.

---

They left the stone circle.

No obstruction.

No pursuit.

---

Too easy.

---

On the way back—

Rei walked slower than usual.

Not because of fatigue.

---

He was… processing.

---

In his mind—

Fragments of images remained.

An arena.

Sand.

Blood.

---

Not clear.

But present.

---

A question appeared:

> Was that a memory?

---

No data to confirm.

---

Elias walked beside him.

He spoke quietly:

"What did you choose?"

---

"Undefined."

---

"Why?"

---

Rei processed.

1.1 seconds.

---

"Because the other options impose limits."

---

Elias nodded slightly.

"That suits you."

---

A pause.

---

Rei asked in return:

"What did you want me to choose?"

---

Elias did not answer immediately.

---

"… I don't know."

---

A rare moment.

Elias had no answer.

---

Rei recorded.

> Even those who give orders have undefined zones

---

---

When they exited the forest—

A strange sensation appeared.

---

Not danger.

Not observation.

---

It was… an environmental change.

---

Small creatures in the forest—

No longer avoided Rei.

---

A small animal stood still, looking at him.

Did not run.

Did not attack.

---

Just watched.

---

Rei stopped.

Looked back at it.

---

No special reaction.

---

But in the system:

> Recognition from natural creatures: changed

---

---

When they returned to the academy—

They were taken straight to the report chamber.

---

The Council was already waiting.

---

"The magic circle activated?"

"Yes."

Elias answered.

---

"The result?"

---

Elias looked at Rei.

---

Rei stepped forward.

---

"Classification: Not applicable."

---

An elder frowned.

"That is not a result of the magic circle."

---

Rei said:

"It is the result of a choice."

---

Silence.

---

An elder asked:

"You reject definition?"

---

"Yes."

---

"Then what are you?"

---

Rei paused.

---

0.9 seconds.

---

"… Existence."

---

Not the answer they wanted.

But the only answer he had.

---

---

The meeting ended faster than expected.

---

No conclusion.

No punishment.

---

Only an internal note:

> "Current classification cannot be applied."

---

---

That night.

Rei stood alone in the academy courtyard.

---

A light breeze.

Normal sounds.

---

But in his mind—

Something new existed.

---

Not a command.

Not data.

---

It was… a gap.

---

Before—

Everything had a clear purpose.

Combat.

Survival.

Optimization.

---

Now—

There were questions that did not need immediate answers.

---

Rei looked at the sky.

---

> If there is no definition…

> Then do I define myself?

---

The question did not disturb him.

---

It simply… existed.

---

---

Elsewhere in the academy—

Elias sat alone.

---

The shadow beneath his feet fluctuated.

Unstable.

---

He knew why.

---

He had started to care.

---

And that—

Was something his magic did not allow.

---

He let out a quiet laugh.

---

"Troublesome."

---

---

Far beyond the academy—

The tall, thin man looked at the final record.

---

"Even the ancient magic circle… couldn't force him."

---

Another person asked:

"What's the next step?"

---

He answered:

"Put him in a situation where 'not choosing' is no longer an option."

---

---

End of chapter.

---

Hidden status panel:

> Rei (零)

Classification: Not applicable

Internal stability: Increased

New variable: "Self-definition"

---

---

Arc 2 continues.

---

And from now on—

Rei is not only a question for the system.

---

He is beginning to become a question for himself.
