Chapter 9 - Chapter 9

Covenant of Error

Chapter 9 – The Value of a Name

---

After the Soul Filter incident, the academy entered a state of silent instability.

There was no public announcement.

No punishment.

But the foundational magic arrays were reinforced.

The logging systems became denser than usual.

And Rei—

Was moved to Level Three Observation.

---

In the tactics class, the teacher paused the lecture midway.

"I have a question for the whole class," he said.

"If there exists an entity that cannot be classified…

what should we do?"

One student answered:

"Eliminate it."

Another:

"Isolate it."

Arlen spoke in a low voice:

"Monitor it. If there are no signs of hostility."

The teacher nodded.

"And what about you, Rei?"

The entire class turned their eyes toward him.

Rei did not avoid their gaze.

"If it cannot be classified, it means the classification system is incomplete."

The classroom fell silent.

"So what is the solution?" the teacher asked.

"Update the system."

Not rebellion.

Not opposition.

Just a logical conclusion.

---

That afternoon, Rei was summoned privately.

Not by the Council.

But by a strange mage who had just arrived at the academy.

He introduced himself briefly:

"I am responsible for the foundational structure of the summoning system."

His gaze was not hostile.

Only sharp, like someone dissecting a subject.

"I want to ask you something."

Rei waited.

"Do you consider yourself human?"

The question had appeared before, from many angles.

But this time—

Rei did not answer immediately.

0.9 seconds.

"The concept of 'human' in this system includes high emotional fluctuation, social bonds, and the capacity for self-contradiction."

"Correct."

"I do not fully meet those conditions."

"Then what are you?"

Rei looked down at his own hands.

There were calluses from combat.

His body temperature was stable.

His heart was beating.

"… I exist."

The mage remained silent for a few seconds.

"You know, the system fails to identify you because the filter is based on standard soul structure. Your soul… has a cushioning layer."

"A cushioning layer?"

"Like it was worn down once and then reconstructed."

Rei had no memory of that.

Only a vague sensation.

---

That evening.

Elias called Rei into his room.

"Have you noticed that the way people look at you has changed?"

"Yes."

"How is it different?"

"Less fear. More curiosity."

Elias leaned against the table.

"Does it bother you?"

"No."

A brief pause.

"… But there is a change."

"What change?"

Rei thought.

"Before, I was looked at like a tool."

"And now?"

"… Like a question."

Elias smiled faintly.

"A question is not a bad thing."

"A question can lead to elimination."

"It can also lead to evolution."

---

At the same time, inside the Council's sealed meeting chamber.

The final report of the Soul Filter was being analyzed.

"The subject exists at a boundary region."

"Not entirely human."

"Not entirely non-human."

One elder spoke gravely:

"If he exists in between… then our system is missing a classification."

"Are you proposing we create a new classification?"

"Not yet."

Another person interjected:

"If we create a new classification, it means acknowledging that he is valid."

Silence filled the room.

---

Late at night.

Rei stood in front of the mirror in his room.

Reflected in the mirror was an ordinary teenager.

No horns.

No wings.

No deformities.

He placed his hand on the glass.

A cool sensation.

> If I do not belong to any category…

do I need a true name?

"Rei" was a nickname assigned by the system.

Not a real name.

No past attached to it.

No one calling it with memory.

He tried to whisper:

"I am…"

There was no next word.

Empty data.

---

Suddenly, the warning magic array trembled lightly.

Not an attack.

An unauthorized access.

Someone was trying to read Rei's core data from afar.

Very subtle.

Very small.

Rei sensed the fluctuation.

Not through emotion.

But through the change within the contract link.

Elias sensed it too.

The two looked at each other at the same time.

"Someone is touching your structure," Elias said.

"Confirmed."

"Can you trace it?"

Rei closed his eyes.

His mana core vibrated slightly.

For the first time—

He actively adjusted a part of magic.

Not to attack.

But to lock his structure.

The unauthorized access was repelled.

In a very distant place—

An observation crystal shattered.

A hoarse-voiced man narrowed his eyes.

"He has started protecting his own data."

---

In the room, Rei opened his eyes.

"Blocked."

Elias looked at him for a long time.

"You just used magic proactively."

"At the minimum level."

"Why?"

Rei answered slowly.

"To maintain a state of freedom from classification."

Not an order.

Not environmental optimization.

But the protection of himself.

Elias said softly:

"Rei… you've started acting for yourself."

He did not deny it.

---

At the end of the chapter, a hidden system recorded an unprecedented change:

> Subject: Rei (零)

Self-criteria initialization: Confirmed

Self-protection of existence structure: Activated

Classification: [ERROR]

System suggestion:

"Expansion of the definition of 'Human' may be required."

---

And in the darkness—

The observing force understood one thing clearly:

Rei was no longer just a flaw.

He was becoming something that could change the very framework of the world itself.

An entity standing in between.

Not yet named.

But already beginning to search for it.
