Chapter 20 - Secrets in the Shadows

Chapter 20

The penthouse felt colder than usual, even with the neon lights glowing through the massive windows.

Yumi Sato sat at the study desk, papers and photographs spread in front of her.

Her hands trembled as she went through every file she could find—old surveillance tapes, security logs, and letters from people long gone.

Then she found it.

A series of hidden documents, smuggled into the penthouse by someone with access to Ryuji Takeda's personal archives.

And what she discovered made her blood run cold.

The fire.

Not just an attack by the syndicate.

The logs, the communications, the photos—they all pointed to one shocking truth:

Ryuji had been present that night—but not just as a bystander.

He had been there as a young rising enforcer, assigned to protect someone…

Someone connected to the Takeda family, yes, but also connected to her own family's tragedy in ways Yumi had never imagined.

She leaned back in her chair, stomach churning.

Every memory of that night—the screams, the fire, the chaos—suddenly took on new meaning.

And then she saw it:

A letter from Ryuji's superior at the time.

It detailed instructions for a young Ryuji to make sure the Sato family was eliminated cleanly—but without collateral damage to anyone else.

Her hands shook.

He hadn't just been at the scene.

He had been involved… in the planning.

Her mind raced.

Did he know she survived? Did he know she would one day uncover this?

And yet… some of the evidence suggested something even stranger:

Ryuji had deliberately let certain details slip.

Details that only someone who wanted someone else to survive would allow.

Yumi's chest tightened as footsteps approached.

"Yumi," a calm voice called.

Ryuji appeared in the doorway, his expression unreadable.

"You're still at it," he said quietly.

"I'm done," Yumi said, closing the folder—but her voice was shaky.

"You're lying."

"I… I just—"

"You found it," Ryuji said softly, stepping closer.

She swallowed hard, refusing to meet his gaze.

"Yes," she whispered.

Ryuji sighed, running a hand through his hair.

"I had hoped you wouldn't discover that part yet."

Her eyes snapped up at him.

"You hoped I wouldn't?"

"I couldn't tell you the whole truth before," he admitted, voice low.

"Because the moment you knew everything, you'd either run… or hate me forever."

Yumi's fists clenched.

"Hate you forever would be the mild reaction," she spat.

Ryuji took a slow step closer.

"And yet…"

He paused.

"…you didn't leave. You stayed."

Her breath caught.

"I… I need answers," she whispered.

"You will get them," he said quietly, sitting opposite her.

"And you'll understand why I did what I did that night."

Yumi stared at him, torn between fury, grief, and the confusing pull she felt toward the man who had haunted her life in ways she was only now beginning to understand.
