Chapter 27 - The First Clash

The central arena had never looked like this before.

What had once been a quiet training ground was now overflowing with people.

Stone seating rose high around the circular arena, every section filled with spectators from across the continent. Nobles, academy officials, military officers, and curious citizens filled the stands, their voices blending into a constant roar of anticipation.

Above the arena, several elevated balconies overlooked the battlefield.

Twelve figures occupied the highest platform.

The regional representatives.

The political leaders who governed the continent under divine authority.

Their presence alone made the tournament more than a simple student competition.

Below them sat other observers: noble families, military commanders, renowned adventurers, and several powerful mages invited to witness the event.

Even Professor Hale stood silently near the instructor section, watching the arena floor.

At the center of it all lay the battlefield.

Four large entrances connected to the arena floor.

One for each region.

The announcer stepped forward.

His voice echoed through the massive structure.

"Welcome to the Regional Ascendant Tournament!"

The crowd responded instantly.

Cheers rose through the arena.

"The strongest Ascendant candidates from across the continent have gathered today to demonstrate their ability, discipline, and potential!"

Across the arena floor, the four delegations stood in their designated sections.

Eastern students gathered on one side.

Northern on another.

Southern and Western waited opposite them.

Rei stood quietly beside Shin and the others.

Shin cracked his knuckles.

"Finally."

Mira glanced up toward the balconies.

"That's… a lot of people watching."

Cassian smirked.

"Good."

Elira shifted nervously.

Valen stood calmly with his arms folded.

The announcer raised a hand.

"The first match will now begin!"

A brief pause followed.

Then:

"Northern Region versus Eastern Region!"

The crowd erupted again.

The two teams stepped forward.

Six students from the northern delegation walked into the arena with steady, disciplined movements.

Six students from the eastern region followed.

Rei walked slightly behind the others.

The two teams stopped across from each other on the stone arena floor.

The announcer stepped aside.

"Instructors will intervene if necessary. Victory is achieved when the opposing team is incapacitated or forced from the arena."

A bell rang sharply.

"Begin!"

The northern team moved first.

Immediately.

Their formation snapped into place like a trained unit.

Earth mana surged from one student as a low defensive barrier rose from the stone floor.

A wind user stepped forward, accelerating a teammate's movement.

Another northern student launched the first attack.

Shin reacted instantly.

Lightning cracked across the arena floor as he intercepted the strike.

Cassian slammed his hand against the ground.

Stone rose to block another incoming attack.

Valen stepped forward next, launching a burst of controlled flame to force the northern front line back.

For the first few seconds the battle looked balanced.

Then the northern coordination began to show.

Their formation shifted smoothly.

Every movement flowed into the next.

Wind redirected attacks.

Earth blocked counterstrikes.

One northern student pushed forward aggressively while the others supported him.

The eastern team was gradually forced backward.

Mira stayed behind them, quickly healing minor burns and bruises.

Elira attempted several wind strikes but the northern formation deflected them efficiently.

The crowd murmured.

From the stands it looked as though the northern team had control.

Shin wiped sweat from his brow.

"They're good."

Cassian gritted his teeth.

"They move like one person."

Valen stepped forward again but the wind user deflected his flames away from the formation.

The northern team advanced another step.

Meanwhile…

Rei had barely attacked.

He moved carefully around the edge of the formation.

Dodging.

Blocking.

Stepping aside.

Doing just enough to avoid damage.

Watching.

Every shift in the northern formation.

Every small hesitation.

Every moment where the pattern reset.

They relied on sequence.

The same order.

The same chain.

Earth defense.

Wind support.

Forward striker.

Reset.

Again.

And again.

And again.

Rei waited.

Then it happened.

The earth user hesitated for half a second while reforming the defensive wall.

The chain stalled.

That was the moment.

Rei stepped forward suddenly.

"Now."

His voice cut through the battle.

Everyone froze for a fraction of a second.

Rei pointed sharply.

"Cassian, break their wall!"

Cassian reacted instantly.

Earth spikes erupted from the ground, shattering the northern defense.

"Mira, support Shin!"

A surge of water mana flowed into Shin's body, restoring his stamina.

"Elira, push their wind user back!"

A precise wind strike forced the northern support mage off balance.

"Valen, cover left!"

Flames burst across the arena floor, cutting off two northern students attempting to regroup.

Before anyone could fully react—

Rei had already moved.

He rushed forward.

Fast.

The northern formation tried to recover but the chain was already broken.

One attack came toward him.

Rei slipped past it.

Another strike followed.

He ducked under it.

Wind blades sliced toward him.

He twisted sideways, barely avoiding them.

Then he reached the center of the formation.

The pillar.

The aggressive northern student.

The same one who had punched him yesterday.

The boy's eyes widened slightly as Rei closed the distance.

Too late.

Rei's fist drove forward.

This time with real force.

The impact echoed sharply across the arena.

The northern student's body lifted from the ground.

For a moment he hung in the air—

The northern student hit the ground hard outside the arena boundary.

Stone dust scattered as he rolled once before stopping.

For a moment the entire arena seemed to hold its breath.

Rei stood near the edge of the arena floor, looking down at him.

The boy groaned and slowly pushed himself onto one elbow, clearly stunned.

Rei didn't say anything.

He simply turned.

Behind him the rest of the northern team still stood frozen in place.

Their formation had collapsed.

Their carefully practiced sequence—earth defense, wind support, forward strike—had been broken in a single instant.

Several of them were still trying to understand what had just happened.

Their eyes moved rapidly between the broken defensive wall… the empty position where their teammate had been standing…

…and Rei.

When had he moved?

One second he had been in front of them.

Then he was gone.

Then he was behind them.

And now one of their team members was outside the arena.

The realization spread slowly across their faces.

The announcer's voice finally returned.

"Elimination!"

The bell rang sharply.

The northern professor lifted one hand.

"That's enough."

His voice carried easily across the arena.

"The match is decided."

A wave of murmurs swept through the massive crowd.

High above the arena, several of the continental representatives leaned slightly forward in their seats.

One of them spoke quietly to the man beside him.

"That was fast."

Another nodded.

"He didn't overpower them."

"He broke their formation."

Below them, Professor Hale watched from the instructor's section.

And for the first time that morning—

He smiled.

On the arena floor the eastern team stood in stunned silence.

Shin blinked.

"…What?"

Cassian slowly lowered his hands from the earth spell he had been preparing.

Valen looked toward the arena boundary where the northern student was still sitting.

Mira glanced between Rei and the fallen opponent.

Elira whispered softly.

"That… was it?"

Rei walked back toward them calmly.

Shin finally found his voice.

"Wait—wait—hold on."

He pointed at the arena boundary.

"That was the whole plan?"

Rei nodded slightly.

"They rely on sequence."

Cassian frowned.

"…You waited for them to reset."

"Yes."

Valen looked toward the northern team.

Their formation had completely collapsed.

Without the central striker and their sequence timing, the rest of the team looked uncertain.

The northern professor raised his hand again.

"The match is over."

The announcer quickly stepped forward.

"The winner of the first match…"

He paused for dramatic effect.

"Eastern Region!"

The crowd erupted.

Cheers echoed through the massive arena.

Across the battlefield the remaining northern students slowly stepped back from the center.

Their professor gestured for them to return.

As they left the arena floor, the boy Rei had punched finally managed to stand.

He rubbed his jaw and glanced toward Rei.

This time there was no anger in his expression.

Just disbelief.

And perhaps a little respect.

Meanwhile the eastern team stood together near the center of the arena.

Mira shook her head slowly.

"I thought this was going to last ten minutes."

Shin laughed.

"I was just getting started!"

Cassian smirked.

"Well."

He looked toward Rei.

"That worked."

Valen nodded once.

"Efficient."

Elira still looked slightly stunned.

Rei simply glanced up toward the stands where the representatives watched from above.

The tournament had only just begun.

But already—

People were paying attention.

The roar of the crowd slowly faded as the eastern team returned to their side of the arena.

Several academy attendants hurried onto the battlefield to smooth the damaged stone floor where Cassian's earth spikes had shattered the northern barrier.

Healers helped the eliminated northern student back to his feet.

Above the arena, quiet conversations spread among the spectators.

Some nobles leaned forward with interest.

Others whispered among themselves.

On the highest balcony, one of the representatives tapped a finger lightly against the railing.

"That boy."

Another nodded.

"The unmarked one."

Below them, Professor Hale stood calmly with his hands behind his back.

The announcer stepped forward again.

"The arena will now prepare for the second match!"

Students from the northern delegation cleared the battlefield while the next two teams approached.

"Southern Region…"

A brief pause.

"…versus Western Region!"

The crowd stirred again.

This time the reaction was different.

Less curiosity.

More excitement.

The western team stepped forward first.

Their confidence had not faded.

One of them cracked his neck as he entered the arena.

"Finally."

Another laughed.

"Let's make this quick."

Across from them, the southern team entered quietly.

Six students.

Calm.

Focused.

Rei watched from the eastern side.

Something immediately felt different.

The formation.

Or rather—

The lack of one.

The five southern students spread slightly apart.

Not evenly.

Not structured like the northern team.

Instead they left a clear gap at the center.

And in that space stood one person.

A tall boy with dark hair and steady eyes.

He did not move.

He did not cast a spell.

He simply waited.

The announcer raised his hand.

"Begin!"

The western team attacked immediately.

Fire burst across the arena floor as their front line surged forward.

Lightning followed from another student.

The western strategy was simple.

Overwhelm the opponent quickly.

But the southern formation barely reacted.

Instead, two of their support members raised small defensive currents of wind and water.

Just enough to redirect the incoming spells.

Not block.

Redirect.

Then the boy in the center moved.

Rei's eyes narrowed slightly.

Fast.

Not lightning-fast like Shin.

But controlled.

Efficient.

The southern fighter stepped forward once.

His hand moved.

A compact sphere of compressed water mana shot forward.

It struck the first western student square in the chest.

The impact knocked him off balance immediately.

Before he could recover—

The southern fighter had already moved again.

Two steps.

A pivot.

A short burst of wind beneath his feet.

He closed the distance instantly.

His palm struck the western student's shoulder.

The impact lifted the boy from the ground and sent him sliding across the arena floor.

The crowd gasped.

"That was fast."

The remaining western students reacted quickly.

Three of them launched attacks at once.

Fire.

Lightning.

Earth spikes.

The southern support members moved again.

Wind currents twisted.

Water barriers bent.

The attacks lost momentum just enough—

For the central fighter to move through them.

He slipped between the spells like water flowing around stone.

Then he struck again.

One western student fell.

Then another.

Each strike precise.

Each movement efficient.

Within moments, the battlefield had changed.

The western team was no longer attacking.

They were trying to keep up.

Shin leaned forward slightly.

"…Okay."

Cassian frowned.

"What the hell?"

Valen's expression sharpened.

"He's stronger than the others."

Rei nodded slightly.

"Yes."

On the battlefield, the western captain attempted one final large fire attack.

Flames surged across the arena.

But the southern fighter stepped through the edge of the blaze.

His hand moved once more.

A sharp wind-enhanced strike landed against the western captain's chest.

The impact launched him backward across the arena boundary.

The bell rang immediately.

"Elimination!"

The announcer's voice followed seconds later.

"The winner of the second match…"

"…Southern Region!"

The arena erupted again.

But this time the reaction was different.

Less cheering.

More murmuring.

Because many of the spectators had noticed the same thing.

Five southern students had barely attacked.

They had simply supported one person.

Shin looked toward Rei.

"…That guy's not Stage One."

Rei nodded.

"No."

Mira frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Rei kept watching the southern fighter as he calmly returned to his team.

His mana had remained steady the entire match.

Controlled.

Stable.

Stronger.

"That's Stage Two."

For the first time that day—

The eastern team realized their next opponent was something far more dangerous than the northern formation.

And high above the arena, several of the continental representatives leaned forward with renewed interest.

The southern team had left the battlefield with the same calm composure they had entered with. The western students were already being escorted away by academy healers.

The announcer stepped forward again.

"To allow the competitors time to recover, the final team match will begin after a short intermission."

A ripple of relief spread through the arena.

Students left their seats.

Servants moved through the stands carrying water and refreshments.

Below the arena floor, academy attendants quickly repaired the damaged sections of stone.

The eastern team gathered near their assigned waiting area.

Shin ran a hand through his hair.

"…Okay."

Cassian crossed his arms.

"That southern guy."

Valen nodded slowly.

"Stage Two."

Mira frowned.

"That's not fair."

Elira looked worried.

"How are we supposed to beat someone like that?"

Rei remained quiet.

Watching.

The southern team stood on the opposite side of the arena.

The Stage-2 student stood in the center again.

Calm.

Relaxed.

Like the earlier match had required no effort.

Rei's eyes followed his movements carefully.

The way he stepped.

The way his shoulders carried tension.

The subtle stiffness in his breathing.

Interesting.

After nearly an hour, the announcer returned to the center of the arena.

"The final team match will now begin!"

The crowd erupted again.

"Southern Region versus Eastern Region!"

Both teams stepped forward.

This time the tension felt heavier.

The southern team stood in their now familiar arrangement.

Five supports.

One center fighter.

The Stage-2 student raised one hand slowly.

Mana gathered around his body.

A thin, shimmering layer wrapped around him.

Like a second skin.

Reinforcement.

Mira whispered,

"That's cheating."

Valen shook his head.

"Stage Two control."

The announcer raised his arm.

"Begin!"

The southern team moved first.

Their support members immediately cast several layered spells.

Wind currents redirected the battlefield.

Water barriers formed angles that forced the eastern team apart.

And the central fighter moved.

Fast.

His reinforced body cut through the arena like a blade.

His first strike collided with Cassian's earth wall.

The stone cracked instantly.

Cassian staggered backward.

"Damn—"

The Stage-2 fighter pivoted.

A wind-enhanced kick forced Shin to retreat.

Flames from Valen's attack struck the mana shell surrounding the southern fighter.

They barely slowed him.

He moved again.

Another strike.

Elira barely avoided the blow as Mira pulled her back with a stream of water.

Within seconds the eastern team was on the defensive.

The crowd roared at the display.

From above, several representatives leaned forward again.

"That boy is impressive."

"The southern academy hid him well."

Below them, Professor Hale watched silently.

On the battlefield the eastern team struggled to maintain formation.

Shin wiped blood from his lip.

"Okay."

Cassian raised another earth barrier.

"He's ridiculous."

Valen tried to pressure him with controlled bursts of flame.

The attacks struck the mana reinforcement around the southern fighter's body.

The shell absorbed most of the force.

Mira shouted from behind them,

"His defense is tied to his mana flow!"

Rei nodded slightly.

He had noticed.

The shell boosted the fighter's strength.

Speed.

Durability.

But it required constant mana circulation.

Rei watched carefully as the southern fighter moved again.

His attacks were flawless.

Efficient.

But something else was obvious.

His body mechanics were poor.

Overreliance on reinforcement.

The shell did the work.

Not the muscles.

Rei stepped forward.

"Shin."

Shin glanced at him.

"What?"

"When I move, push him right."

Shin grinned.

"Finally."

"Valen."

"Yes."

"Force him left."

Valen nodded.

"Cassian."

"Yeah?"

"Break his footing."

Cassian smirked.

"Gladly."

The southern fighter rushed forward again.

Rei moved.

He stepped directly into the attack path.

The crowd gasped.

The reinforced strike came down.

At the last possible moment—

Rei released it.

Just a spark.

A tiny flicker of the strange black energy.

Invisible to most.

It touched the edge of the mana shell.

For a fraction of a second—

The reinforcement flickered.

The southern fighter's eyes widened slightly.

The shell weakened.

Rei stepped inside his guard.

"Now."

Cassian slammed the ground.

The arena floor shifted.

Shin's lightning burst from the side.

Valen's flames forced the fighter's retreat path closed.

Elira pushed a sudden gust of wind.

The southern fighter stumbled.

For the first time in the match—

His body moved without the reinforcement perfectly stabilizing it.

Rei struck.

A direct blow to the torso.

The weakened mana shell shattered completely.

Shin followed instantly.

Lightning exploded across the arena floor.

The impact launched the southern fighter backward.

He crashed across the boundary line.

The bell rang.

The arena erupted in stunned noise.

For several seconds no one spoke.

Then the announcer shouted:

"The winner…"

"…Eastern Region!"

The crowd roared.

But confusion spread through the stands.

Several spectators whispered.

"Did the shield collapse?"

"His mana must have run out."

"Perfect timing."

"A lucky break."

Across the arena the southern fighter slowly pushed himself up, staring at the place where his reinforcement had failed.

Rei had already stepped back.

Calm.

Expression unchanged.

Shin laughed loudly.

"WE DID IT!"

Mira collapsed onto the arena floor in relief.

Elira covered her mouth in shock.

Cassian smirked.

"Not bad."

Valen nodded once.

Above the arena, most observers believed the same explanation.

The southern fighter had exhausted his mana.

The eastern team had simply capitalized.

A fortunate moment.

A fluke victory.

But near the instructor section—

Professor Hale had seen the flicker.

The tiny spark of black energy.

His eyes followed Rei quietly as the eastern team celebrated.

And for a moment—

Hale smiled again.
