Chapter 44 - The Beginning of Obsession

Inside the Salvatore Boarding House, tension lingered like a storm that refused to break.

Klaus Mikaelson stood near the fireplace, a glass of bourbon untouched in his hand.

That alone was unusual.

He always drank.

But tonight—

His mind was elsewhere.

"Older than us…" he murmured.

The words didn't sound threatening.

They sounded intrigued.

Behind him, Elijah Mikaelson watched quietly.

Observing his brother.

Understanding him better than anyone else.

And that—

That was concerning.

"You're thinking too much," Elijah said calmly.

Klaus smirked slightly.

"I'm not thinking enough."

He turned, finally taking a sip of his drink.

"There's something we're missing."

Elijah stepped closer.

"Or something we don't understand yet."

Klaus's smile widened.

"Exactly."

That was the problem.

Klaus Mikaelson feared very few things.

But what he truly hated—

Was not knowing.

And Alexander—

Was an entire mystery.

"Let's review," Klaus continued, pacing slowly now.

"Bonnie's magic retreats from him."

"Elena trusts him."

"Katherine is already making her move."

Elijah raised an eyebrow slightly.

"You're certain?"

Klaus chuckled.

"It's Katherine."

"That's all the certainty I need."

Elijah didn't argue.

Because it was true.

Klaus stopped walking.

His expression sharpening.

"And then there's the records."

Ancient.

Scattered.

But consistent.

A man appearing across centuries.

Unchanged.

Unexplained.

Unchallenged.

"That kind of pattern…" Klaus said slowly.

"…doesn't happen by accident."

Elijah nodded once.

"It suggests intent."

Klaus's eyes lit slightly.

"Yes."

"Purpose."

"And I want to know what it is."

Elijah studied him carefully.

"You're becoming invested."

Klaus smiled.

"Of course I am."

Then his voice dropped slightly.

More serious now.

"When something exists outside the rules…"

He paused.

"It either rewrites them…"

"…or destroys them."

Silence filled the room.

Because both outcomes—

Were dangerous.

"And which do you think he is?" Elijah asked.

Klaus didn't hesitate.

"Both."

That answer came too easily.

Too naturally.

And that—

That was what made it real.

Klaus moved toward the window, staring out into the darkness.

Toward Alexander's house.

Toward the unknown.

"I've spent a thousand years becoming the apex predator," he said quietly.

His voice held no arrogance.

Just fact.

"I don't intend to be replaced."

Elijah stepped beside him.

"You don't know that he's a threat."

Klaus smiled faintly.

"I don't know that he isn't."

A pause.

Then—

"And that's enough."

Across town—

Unseen—

The consequences of that thought were already forming.

Because Klaus Mikaelson didn't ignore potential threats.

He eliminated them.

Or controlled them.

And Alexander—

Would not be easily controlled.

Back at Alexander's house, the atmosphere had shifted once again.

Katherine was gone.

But her presence lingered.

Like a move made on a chessboard.

Unseen consequences waiting to unfold.

Alexander stood alone now.

Silent.

Still.

Then—

He spoke softly.

"To be expected."

Like he had seen this all before.

Because he had.

Different people.

Different names.

Same patterns.

Curiosity.

Ambition.

Fear.

And eventually—

Conflict.

His golden eyes darkened slightly as he looked out into the night.

"They never learn."

And somewhere in Mystic Falls—

Without knowing why—

Bonnie shivered.

Elena hesitated.

Klaus smiled.

And Katherine planned.

Because whether they understood it or not—

They had all just stepped into something far bigger than themselves.
