Chapter 36 - Klaus Tests Alexander

The night over Mystic Falls had grown darker.

Thick clouds slowly swallowed the moon, covering the town in a dim, uneasy shadow. A cold wind moved through the empty streets, rustling leaves and whispering through the silence.

From a distance, everything looked peaceful.

Calm.

Normal.

But beneath that illusion—

Something dangerous was about to unfold.

Inside Alexander's house, the atmosphere felt heavy.

Not loud.

Not chaotic.

Just… tense.

Like the air itself was waiting.

Elena Gilbert stood near the door, her body still, but her thoughts racing.

Damon's warning echoed in her mind.

Klaus Mikaelson.

Even she knew that name.

Everyone did.

The Original Hybrid.

The monster behind countless stories.

The one even vampires feared.

Elena's eyes slowly shifted toward Alexander.

He stood near the window, exactly where he had been moments ago.

Still.

Calm.

Untouched by the tension.

"You really aren't worried?" she asked.

There was a slight edge in her voice now.

Not fear.

But confusion.

Alexander didn't turn immediately.

His gaze remained on the dark street outside.

"Fear rarely improves a situation," he said calmly.

Elena frowned slightly.

"That wasn't really an answer."

A faint smile touched his lips.

"It was the only one you need."

Before she could respond—

Something changed.

Subtle.

But undeniable.

Alexander's eyes shifted toward the door.

His expression didn't show fear.

Or concern.

But recognition.

Like someone noticing a long-expected arrival.

So he decided to come personally.

Elena noticed instantly.

"What is it?" she asked, her voice lowering.

Alexander answered quietly—

"A guest."

The front door exploded inward.

Not opened.

Not knocked.

Broken.

Wood slammed violently against the wall, the sound echoing through the house.

A cold presence filled the room.

And standing in the doorway—

Was Klaus Mikaelson.

His posture relaxed.

His expression calm.

A faint smile resting on his lips.

But his eyes—

Sharp.

Predatory.

Dangerous.

Elena froze.

Her heartbeat spiked instantly.

"Klaus…" she whispered.

Klaus stepped inside as if he owned the place.

His gaze swept across the room briefly—

Then stopped.

Locked.

On Alexander.

"Good evening," he said casually.

Alexander didn't move.

"Niklaus."

Klaus's smile widened slightly.

"Straight to the name. No titles."

Alexander shrugged faintly.

"You don't seem like a man who enjoys formality."

Klaus chuckled.

"You're quite right."

The tension thickened.

Even the silence felt heavy now.

Elena instinctively stepped back, trying to stay out of whatever was about to happen.

Because she could feel it.

This wasn't a conversation.

It was something else.

Klaus began walking slowly toward Alexander.

Measured steps.

Controlled.

Like a predator approaching something unfamiliar.

"I've been thinking about our conversation," he said.

Alexander tilted his head slightly.

"That sounds dangerous."

Klaus smirked.

"For most people, yes."

He stopped just two steps away.

Close.

Too close.

"You intrigue me," Klaus said.

Alexander nodded slightly.

"You've mentioned that."

Klaus's eyes darkened.

"And I dislike mysteries."

Alexander replied calmly—

"Then you chose the wrong town."

That was enough.

Klaus moved.

Faster than Elena could even process.

One moment he stood still—

The next—

His hand was around Alexander's throat.

Slamming him hard against the wall.

The impact cracked the plaster instantly.

A sharp sound echoed through the room.

Elena gasped.

"Stop!"

But Klaus didn't even look at her.

His eyes glowed faintly now.

Focused entirely on Alexander.

"Let's see what you really are."

He tightened his grip.

More pressure.

More force.

Enough to crush bone.

Enough to end almost anything.

But Alexander…

Didn't react.

No struggle.

No panic.

No resistance.

Just calm.

Absolute calm.

Slowly—

Alexander's golden eyes met Klaus's.

And for a brief moment—

Something shifted.

Then Alexander raised his hand.

Calmly.

Effortlessly.

And placed it on Klaus's wrist.

Lightly.

And everything stopped.

Klaus's expression changed instantly.

Not dramatically.

Not visibly to most.

But enough.

Because something impossible had just happened.

He couldn't move.

Not his hand.

Not his arm.

Not his body.

It was as if the world itself had decided—

He was not allowed to move.

For the first time in centuries—

Klaus Mikaelson felt resistance.

Real resistance.

Not strength.

Not power.

Something else.

Something deeper.

Alexander calmly removed Klaus's hand from his throat.

Like it was nothing more than an inconvenience.

Then stepped forward.

Closing the distance between them.

The air changed.

Heavier.

Colder.

Older.

Even Elena felt it.

Her chest tightened slightly.

Her instincts screamed—

This is not normal.

Alexander spoke quietly.

"Testing people without permission is rude."

The invisible pressure vanished.

Klaus regained control.

He stepped back slowly.

Not out of fear.

Never fear.

But something close to… caution.

His eyes studied Alexander again.

But now—

There was something new in them.

Respect.

Genuine.

Rare.

Then Klaus laughed.

A low, amused sound.

"Well…"

He shook his head slightly.

"That was impressive."

Alexander adjusted his jacket calmly.

"You expected something else?"

Klaus grinned.

"I expected resistance."

He paused.

Then added—

"Not dominance."

Silence followed.

Heavy.

Meaningful.

Elena looked between them, stunned.

She had just witnessed something impossible.

Something no one should be capable of.

Klaus finally turned toward the door.

But before leaving—

He stopped.

And looked back.

"You are full of surprises," he said.

Alexander replied calmly—

"So are you."

And then—

Klaus was gone.

Vanished into the night with vampire speed.

The house fell silent once again.

Elena stood frozen for a moment.

Still processing.

Still trying to understand.

"You just…"

She struggled to find the words.

"You stopped Klaus."

Alexander walked back toward the window.

Looking out at the dark, quiet town.

His golden eyes reflecting faint light.

"He stopped himself."

Far away—

On a rooftop overlooking the house—

Rebekah Mikaelson stood watching.

A small smile formed on her lips.

"Well…"

She whispered softly.

"This just got interesting."
