Chapter 52 - Chapter 54: The Mark of the Past

The symbol on the phone screen burned into Ariana's eyes.

A small, twisted insignia—sharp curves forming something almost like a serpent coiling around a dagger.

Her breath hitched.

"No…" she whispered, her fingers tightening around the phone. "It can't be…"

Adrian noticed the sudden change in her expression.

"What is it?" he asked, his voice low but urgent.

Ariana didn't respond immediately. Her mind had already traveled years back—into a past she had buried, locked away, and sworn never to revisit.

"That symbol…" she finally said, her voice strained, "I've seen it before."

The room stilled.

Adrian's mother narrowed her eyes slightly. "Where?"

Ariana swallowed hard. "Before I met Adrian… before all of this… I was held somewhere."

Silence dropped like a bomb.

Adrian's expression darkened instantly. "Held? What do you mean?"

Ariana's hands trembled slightly, but she forced herself to continue.

"I was seventeen," she said slowly. "I was taken… by a group. They never showed their faces. Never used real names. But that symbol—it was everywhere. On the walls. On their documents. Even on the doors."

Her breathing grew uneven.

"They weren't just criminals… they were organized. Powerful. Untouchable."

Adrian felt a cold wave run through him.

"Why didn't you ever tell me?" he asked.

Ariana let out a hollow laugh. "Because I escaped. And I thought it was over."

But clearly—

It wasn't.

Adrian's mother watched her carefully now, her expression no longer calm but calculating.

"The Black Serpent Syndicate," she said quietly.

Everyone froze.

Ariana looked up sharply. "You know them?"

A faint smile touched the older woman's lips. "Of course I do."

Adrian's voice turned sharp. "You're connected to them?"

She didn't deny it.

"They're not just some underground group," she continued. "They deal in information, power… and people."

Ariana's stomach dropped.

"People…?" she repeated.

Adrian's fists clenched.

"Human trafficking," he said darkly.

Ariana felt like the ground beneath her was collapsing again.

"No…" she whispered. "You're saying my daughter—"

"Is in their hands," Adrian finished.

The air turned suffocating.

For a moment, Ariana couldn't breathe.

Her daughter…

Her baby…

In the hands of the same people she barely escaped from.

"No," she said, shaking her head, stepping back. "No, I'm not letting that happen again."

Her fear was still there—

But something stronger was rising over it.

Determination.

"I'm going," she said firmly.

Adrian grabbed her wrist. "Absolutely not."

Ariana turned to him, her eyes blazing. "They said come alone."

"And you're actually considering listening to them?" Adrian's voice rose. "That's a trap!"

"I don't care!" she snapped. "That's my child!"

Her words hit hard.

Adrian went silent.

Because he knew—

She was right.

Ariana took a deep breath, forcing herself to stay steady.

"I've been there before," she said. "I know how they operate. If there's even a chance my daughter is alive… I'm taking it."

Adrian's grip on her wrist tightened slightly.

"And if it's a setup?" he asked quietly.

Ariana met his gaze without hesitation.

"Then I'll walk straight into it."

Silence.

Heavy. Unavoidable.

Adrian exhaled slowly, running a hand through his hair.

"Then I'm coming with you."

"No," Ariana said immediately.

"This isn't up for discussion."

"Yes, it is," she shot back. "Because if they see you—if they realize who you are—it will complicate everything."

Adrian's jaw clenched.

"I'm not risking you."

"And I'm not risking our daughter!" Ariana fired back.

Their eyes locked—neither willing to back down.

Then—

Ariana stepped closer, lowering her voice.

"Trust me," she said softly.

That one sentence—

It broke something in Adrian's resistance.

Because despite everything…

He still did.

Slowly, reluctantly, he let go of her wrist.

But his eyes remained dark with warning.

"If anything goes wrong," he said, "I will burn that entire organization to the ground."

Ariana gave a faint, determined nod.

"I know."

Hours later—

Ariana stood alone at the designated location.

An abandoned warehouse.

The same kind of place…

Where her nightmare once began.

The wind howled softly, rustling broken metal sheets.

Her heart pounded—but her steps didn't falter.

She walked inside.

Darkness.

Silence.

Then—

A voice echoed.

"You came."

Ariana froze.

That voice…

Her blood ran cold.

Because she recognized it.

Slowly, a figure stepped out from the shadows.

Tall. Calm. Dangerous.

A man she never thought she'd see again.

"Miss me?" he asked with a smirk.

Ariana's lips parted in horror.

"You…" she whispered.

"You're supposed to be in prison."

He chuckled.

"Prison?" he said. "That was never meant to hold me."

Ariana's entire body went tense.

Because standing in front of her—

Was the man who once destroyed her life.

Cliffhanger:

👉 He steps closer and says—

"Let's make a deal… your daughter, in exchange for something far more valuable." 😈
