Chapter 39 - Chapter 41 – Shadows of the Past

The rooftop trembled under the force of another explosion.

Flames burst from the far edge of the building, licking the night sky like hungry predators. Smoke thickened the air, making every breath a struggle. The city below continued its restless rhythm, unaware that above, a war was unfolding that could change everything.

Meherin stood frozen for a split second.

Not because of the fire.

Not because of the Architect.

But because of the person standing in front of her.

Alina.

Her sister.

Alive.

And possibly… her enemy.

The Breaking Point

"Say something, Meherin," Alina said coldly, though there was a flicker—just a flicker—of something human in her eyes.

Meherin's chest tightened.

"I thought you were dead…" her voice trembled, but there was anger beneath it. "We buried you, Alina."

Alina let out a hollow laugh. "You buried a lie."

Ryan stepped forward, subtly positioning himself between them. His voice was calm, but edged with steel. "Enough emotional distractions. We don't have time for this."

But Meherin grabbed his arm. "No, Ryan. I need to hear this."

Her eyes locked with Alina's.

"Why?"

One word.

But it carried years of pain.

Alina's Truth

For a moment, the chaos around them faded.

Alina exhaled slowly, lowering her weapon slightly—not in surrender, but in memory.

"You want the truth?" she said. "Fine."

Her voice changed—less cold, more dangerous.

"That night… the night I 'died'… it wasn't an accident."

Meherin's breath caught.

"What do you mean?"

Alina's eyes darkened.

"I was targeted. Someone wanted me gone. And when I tried to escape…" she paused, jaw tightening, "I was taken."

Ryan's eyes narrowed. "Taken… by who?"

Alina looked straight at him.

"The same people who created the Architect."

Silence.

Heavy.

Deadly.

The Architect's Origin

The wind howled across the rooftop as if reacting to the truth.

"They're not just one person," Alina continued. "The Architect is a system… a network… a mind built from multiple people. Strategists. Killers. Tech geniuses."

Meherin felt her knees weaken.

"That's impossible…"

"No," Ryan said quietly. "It's not."

Both women turned to him.

Ryan's face was darker than ever.

"I've heard rumors… years ago. A project designed to create the ultimate strategist. Someone—or something—that could control outcomes, manipulate events, and predict every move before it happens."

Alina nodded slowly.

"They turned me into part of it."

Meherin's heart shattered.

"They… used you?"

Alina's lips curled bitterly. "Not just used. Rebuilt."

Emotional Collapse

For the first time, Meherin stepped closer to her.

Not as an enemy.

But as a sister.

"You could've come back…" she whispered. "You could've told me."

Alina's eyes flickered with something painful.

"You think I had a choice?" she snapped. "Every move I made was monitored. Every thought controlled. They made me watch you… from afar… while they turned me into a weapon."

Meherin's eyes filled with tears.

"Then why now? Why show yourself now?"

Alina looked away.

"Because I'm done being their puppet."

The Trap Tightens

Suddenly—

BEEP. BEEP. BEEP.

All three of them froze.

Ryan's expression changed instantly.

"That's not good."

The holographic panels around them flickered to life again.

The Architect's voice returned.

Calm.

Cold.

Terrifying.

"Emotional reunions… how touching."

Meherin's stomach dropped.

"You think this was coincidence?" the voice continued. "No. This… was planned."

Ryan's jaw clenched. "What did you do?"

The voice chuckled.

"I gave you hope."

Suddenly, the rooftop floor beneath them shifted.

Mechanical locks clicked into place.

Hidden panels opened.

Laser grids activated.

And worst of all—

Explosives. Everywhere.

The Ultimate Game

Meherin gasped. "Ryan…"

He grabbed her hand instantly.

"Stay close."

Alina stepped back, scanning the area. "This isn't just an attack… it's a game board."

"Exactly," the Architect said. "Three players. One outcome."

A countdown appeared on the central screen:

05:00

Five minutes.

"That's how long you have," the voice continued. "Solve the puzzle… or die together."

Meherin's mind raced. "Puzzle?"

Suddenly, multiple pathways lit up—each leading to different sections of the rooftop.

Ryan's eyes narrowed. "It's forcing us to split."

"No," Meherin said quickly. "That's what it wants."

Alina shook her head. "If we don't… we all die."

Tension snapped between them.

Trust.

Doubt.

Fear.

Everything collided in that moment.

Ryan & Meherin – A Dangerous Bond

Ryan turned to Meherin, gripping her shoulders.

"Listen to me," he said, voice intense. "Whatever happens… you follow my lead."

Her heart pounded.

"No. We do this together."

Ryan's eyes softened—just for a second.

"You've already changed everything for me," he whispered.

Meherin's breath hitched.

"Ryan…"

He leaned closer, their foreheads almost touching.

"If this goes wrong… I need you to survive."

Her voice broke. "Don't say that."

"Say it," he demanded softly.

Tears slipped down her cheeks.

"I'll survive… but only with you."

For a moment—

Just a moment—

Everything else disappeared.

The First Crack

Alina interrupted, voice sharp.

"Time's running out."

The countdown hit 03:00.

Ryan stepped back, mask of control back in place.

"Fine. We split. But we stay connected."

Meherin nodded, wiping her tears.

Alina looked between them.

"If we make it out… we settle everything."

Ryan's gaze hardened. "You better hope we do."

The Betrayal Tease

Just as they prepared to move—

The Architect spoke again.

"Oh… one more thing."

All three froze.

"You should know… one of you…"

A pause.

Long.

Deliberate.

"Is still working for me."

Silence exploded between them.

Meherin looked at Ryan.

Ryan looked at Alina.

Alina's grip tightened on her weapon.

Trust… shattered in an instant.

FINAL CLIFFHANGER

The countdown hit 01:30.

The rooftop began to collapse in sections.

Fire spread faster.

Explosives blinked red.

And the Architect's voice echoed one last time—

"Choose carefully… because betrayal… is already among you."

Meherin whispered, voice trembling—

"Ryan… who do we trust?"

Ryan didn't answer immediately.

His eyes moved between her… and Alina.

Cold.

Calculating.

Dangerous.

Finally, he said—

"…I don't know."
