As soon as I opened the door, both people in the outer office turned to look at me.
Mu Lingze was seated at her desk, while Zhao Chenyu stood beside her, holding a file and helping her organize it. Judging by their expressions, they must have been having a pleasant conversation earlier.
"What's wrong?" Mu Lingze asked. Beside her, Zhao Chenyu seemed to have thought of something, his eyes flickering with a hint of nervousness.
"It's nothing. Zhao Chenyu, come inside."
In the inner office, Zhao Chenyu stood on the other side of the boss's desk.
"Hello, Ms. Lan," Zhao Chenyu greeted first. I couldn't tell whether he was no longer nervous or had simply given up trying to hide it.
"What was your name again?" Auntie Ouyang asked. Hearing this question, I couldn't help but feel a bit exasperated. But then again, Auntie Ouyang never paid much attention to people she wasn't interested in.
"Ms. Lan, my name is Zhao Chenyu."
"Where are you from?"
"Dongshan."
"Dongshan?" Auntie Ouyang looked him up and down, a trace of doubt in her eyes.
"Yes, from Dongshan Island, Qing," he added.
"Hmm, can you drive?" Auntie Ouyang asked.
[Auntie Ouyang, you really didn't listen to a word of his introduction earlier, did you?]
"Yes, I have a B2 license," Zhao Chenyu replied, his eyes losing some of their earlier panic and gaining a spark of hope. Clearly, being asked such questions meant there was a chance.
"Do you have time to work?"
"Yes, I don't have many classes right now," he said, his tone now noticeably excited. He shot me a grateful look, probably thinking I had put in a good word for him with Auntie Ouyang in private—though I really hadn't.
"How's your drinking capacity?"
"Not bad. Back home, when there's a banquet, I can drink all afternoon," he said.
"Let's give it a try," Auntie Ouyang said, pulling a set of keys from her drawer and tossing them to Zhao Chenyu.
Zhao Chenyu stared at the Panamera key in his hand, immediately cradling it carefully.
After Auntie Ouyang tidied up, we headed downstairs, drawing quite a few curious glances along the way. Even Zhao Chenyu, who had been walking with his head down and shoulders hunched behind us, straightened his back.
When we reached the parking lot, we stopped in front of a red Panamera. Auntie Ouyang stood beside it, arms crossed, looking at me.
Zhao Chenyu quickly composed himself, pressed the unlock button, and hurried to open the passenger door for Auntie Ouyang. But instead, she got into the back seat with me.
Zhao Chenyu froze for a moment but quickly recovered, rushing to the driver's seat and gently caressing the steering wheel.
"Can you drive?" Auntie Ouyang asked.
"Uh—yes, I can!" Zhao Chenyu snapped out of his daze, adjusted himself, and started the car.
Auntie Ouyang and I sat in the back seat. She took my hand, her slender fingers adorned with red nail polish naturally intertwining with mine. She often did this, but as soon as our hands were linked, she seemed to remember something and let go.
I glanced at Auntie Ouyang, then instinctively looked into the rearview mirror—hopefully Zhao Chenyu hadn't noticed.
"Take us to ** Restaurant," Auntie Ouyang said.
"Yes, Ms. Lan~"
This guy Zhao Chenyu sure adapted to his role quickly.
When we arrived and entered the private room, I immediately understood why Auntie Ouyang hadn't wanted to come. Several portly, middle-aged men approached with ingratiating smiles, eager to shake Auntie Ouyang's hand. I really couldn't understand what Uncle Qin was thinking.
Then Aunt Ouyang pushed Zhao Chenyu forward, introducing him as the company's new supervisor. On the way here, Aunt Ouyang had already explained to him what he was supposed to do.
I looked at Zhao Chenyu's dark-yellow skin and his small, squinting eyes as he followed Aunt Ouyang, greeting everyone with practiced ease. Although I felt extremely uncomfortable inside, I had to admit that this kind of situation really called for someone like him.
After several rounds of drinks...
[Damn! This guy is a beast!]
I was amazed. I had known Zhao Chenyu could drink, but I never expected him to be this good. He was practically using strong liquor as mouthwash and beer to quench his thirst. The whole table had already gone through several rounds.
Looking at his flushed, dark complexion, he was clearly slurring his words, but he still managed to speak eloquently, spouting one clever phrase after another. I couldn't help but wonder if he had spent all his school days learning these "drinking lines."
"Ah—Director Chen, let me tell you, working under Director Lan is truly a blessing. Director Lan treats employees and partners with nothing but respect, don't you agree? Come on, a man who doesn't drink is wasting his life. I'll finish this, you just take a sip~" With that, he downed his entire glass.
Aunt Ouyang and I just watched him. At first, Aunt Ouyang had frowned, but after Zhao Chenyu skillfully blocked all the drinks meant for her in various ways, she relaxed and even looked at him with a hint of gentleness.
I didn't drink a single drop because we had agreed in the car that during introductions, I would be introduced as the driver...
Damn it...
But that was the only way.
...
"You all enjoy the meal. I have something to attend to this afternoon, so I'll take my leave now. Xuan Yu, Chen Yu, let's go." Seeing that things were wrapping up, Aunt Ouyang stood up and left.
"Alright, Director Lan, I hope you'll continue to guide me in the future!"
"Take care, Director Lan."
A few red-faced old foxes escorted Aunt Ouyang out of the private room. I carried "Supervisor Zhao" and placed him in the back seat of the Panamera.
"Ugh! He's so heavy!" I tossed him into the car while Aunt Ouyang had already taken the driver's seat.
"Vroom!" The car started.
Zhao Chenyu, who had been lying there "half-dead" just moments ago, suddenly shook his head and sobered up, leaving me utterly confused.
"You... you're okay?" I asked.
"Ah... well, my head's a bit dizzy, but it's nothing serious." He pinched the space between his eyebrows and spoke to me, his tone no longer slurred or hesitant like before.
"You... can you still drink?" I asked.
"More or less. I can hold my liquor, but I can't really drink myself to death, can I, senior? Drink when you need to, pretend when you have to." He chuckled, then caught sight of Aunt Ouyang driving in front and immediately wiped the grin off his face.
"Not bad." Aunt Ouyang said calmly.
"It's an honor to help you block the drinks. I can even write in my resume that I attended a banquet with a renowned entrepreneur in this city, hehe." Zhao Chenyu suddenly seemed less tense.
"Haha," I laughed, glancing at Aunt Ouyang through the rearview mirror. She was clearly amused too.
Before long, we arrived near the school gate. Zhao Chenyu and I got out of the car. Aunt Ouyang rolled down the window and said to me, "Have him start work tomorrow."
Without waiting for Zhao Chenyu to respond, she rolled the window back up, stepped on the gas, and disappeared from our sight.
I was still gazing in the direction Aunt Ouyang had left when my hand was suddenly grabbed. I looked over to see Zhao Chenyu, his face flushed with excitement.
"Senior, thank you so much! I really didn't think you'd take it seriously—or that you might just brush me off with some excuse. I never expected you to be so kind. Thank you, senior." Zhao Chenyu kept shaking my hand as he spoke.
I could only manage a polite response while thinking to myself,
[I really was just planning to brush you off. Who knew you'd stumble into such good luck?]
Back in the lab, I couldn't help but reflect on the whole thing.
Well, I guess he just got lucky. No big deal, anyway.
...
In the afternoon, as I left the lab and reached the building entrance, I spotted Jingyan.
She wore a deep blue retro-style Hong Kong-inspired blouse, its fabric rippling like ocean waves and carrying the charm of bygone eras. Paired with a deep gray-brown A-line pencil skirt, it exuded elegance with a hint of alluring temptation. A thin black belt cinched her waist, adorned with a delicate doll pendant that seemed to whisper tales from a girl's inner fairy tale. Her long hair cascaded over her shoulders like a waterfall, swaying gently in the breeze, while her slender, jade-like legs moved gracefully. On her feet were a pair of black British-style chunky shoes. She looked like a literary maiden who had just stepped out of a library brimming with wisdom, carrying a faint aura of bookish charm and youthful vitality.
It was right after classes ended, and though everyone was rushing about, nearly every passerby couldn't help but pause their gaze on Jingyan. I had only taken a few steps when I even noticed two freshmen-looking students holding up their phones toward her—probably trying to ask for her contact information.
I quietly walked up behind her, suddenly covering her eyes and putting on a playful voice. "Guess who?"
"Ah! You... you're the big bad wolf!" Jingyan was startled, then used her soft hands to pry mine away as she exclaimed.
"Hehe~ Then the big bad wolf is going to eat the little lamb~" I leaned closer, whispering in her ear.
"You're so annoying!" Jingyan pulled my hand away and turned around, giving my chest a couple of playful taps. "Look at you—I spent so much effort curling my lashes and doing my eye makeup, and you messed it all up."
"Even without makeup, you're still the most beautiful person in the world~" I said, taking her hand as we started walking.
"Alright, let's hurry. Mom and the others are probably already home," Jingyan said, pulling me forward as she broke into a light run.
As soon as we stepped outside the school gate, we spotted a familiar red Panamera. We exchanged a knowing smile and headed toward the car.
Just a couple of steps away from the vehicle, the driver's door suddenly cracked open. A foot clad in a sleek black stiletto heel gracefully emerged, stepping lightly onto the doorframe as if heralding a grand entrance. As the door swung open wider, a long, shapely leg in sheer black stockings gradually came into view. The delicate fabric clung to her fair, jade-like foot, slender calf, and full thigh, weaving a tale of endless allure.
The moment her high heels touched the ground, a crisp "click" echoed through the air. Beneath the black stockings, the muscles of her beautiful legs were taut and powerful, showcasing a breathtaking dynamic beauty. Just as this perfect leg line was about to fade from view, the scene shifted again—another equally enchanting long leg stepped out of the car, complementing the first in a dazzling display. The beauty in the driver's seat finally unveiled her mysterious veil. She wore a deep black body-hugging pencil skirt adorned with starlight-like sparkles that shimmered and glittered as her elegant waist swayed gently.
One hand rested lightly on the car door, while the other brushed through her smooth, cascading wavy hair, dark as a waterfall. Her peach-shaped eyes, willow-like brows, pearl-white skin, high-bridged nose, and dewy red lips formed an exquisitely made-up face that radiated an intoxicating aura, her gaze firmly locked on me.
Her steps were light, her posture graceful. Her voluptuous figure, accentuated by the pencil skirt, revealed alluring curves. The sheer fabric over her chest hinted at a deep cleavage, adding a touch of mystery to her charm. Below the slender waist perfectly outlined by the skirt were full, rounded hips, stretching the hem taut like ripe peaches, trembling gently with each step.
This was my mother-in-law, the flawless, enchanting, and alluring Aunt Ouyang.
"My little master, do I look good today?" Aunt Ouyang asked with a light laugh, her tone as smooth as silk.
"Ah... y-yes—yes, you do!" I stammered, momentarily stunned.
"Ouch!" I yelped as I felt a sudden 180-degree twist in the skin around my waist, followed by a soft "hmph."
"Mom, there are no guests today. Why are you dressed so nicely?" Jingyan asked.
"Can't I look good even without guests? The best side of me should be saved for my family, shouldn't it?" Aunt Ouyang replied, her large peach-blossom eyes winking at me.
"Brother~ Sister Jingyan~" The rear window rolled down, revealing a delicate, beautiful face with big, sparkling round eyes blinking at us.
"Little sister~" I noticed she was still in her school uniform.
"Master, shall we drive?" Aunt Ouyang didn't wait for my response before heading to the passenger seat.
We got into the car, with Jingyan and my sister chatting in the back. I fastened my seatbelt, glanced at Aunt Ouyang beside me, and said, "Auntie, could you please sit properly?"
"No~ I'll sit however I want," Aunt Ouyang replied with a mischievous smile.
I forced a smile, took a deep breath, and focused on driving. Once Aunt Ouyang settled into the passenger seat, she kicked off her high heels, stretched out her long, stocking-clad legs, and crossed them on the dashboard. She turned her body toward me, one hand stroking her black-stockinged legs while watching me drive. The red interior of the car and Aunt Ouyang, dressed entirely in black, exuded a mature, irresistible allure.
I was truly... suffering and enjoying it at the same time...
As the sunset faded and night began to fall, I drove the red Panamera smoothly into the villa district, pulling into one of the few luxurious villas in the area.
A middle-aged man, standing over six feet tall in a plaid shirt with a bit of a belly, watched us park with a warm smile. This was Qin Jingyan's father, my father-in-law, Qin Bin.
"Uncle Qin!"
"Dad!"
Jingyan and my younger sister rushed into Uncle Qin's arms, and he affectionately patted their heads.
I got out of the car and greeted him as well, and he responded with a smile and a nod.
Aunt Ouyang, having slipped on her shoes, stepped out of the car and glanced at Uncle Qin. "Are Bowen and Sister Wanyi inside?"
"No, they're in the backyard, having a barbecue," Uncle Qin replied, his eyes noticeably lighting up at the sight of Aunt Ouyang.
"Barbecue! Uncle Qin, let's go! Come on~" My sister and Jingyan each grabbed one of Uncle Qin's arms and pulled him toward the backyard.
"Honestly, just standing around here while others do all the work," Aunt Ouyang said with feigned annoyance. She then came over, linked her arm with mine, and said, "Come on, sweetie, let's join them."
Even before reaching the backyard, the aroma of grilled meat wafted through the air, accompanied by cheerful laughter.
"Dad, I want chicken skewers!" It was my sister's voice.
"Sure, the chicken is over there. You can skewer it yourself," came my father's reply.
"Be careful, Jingyan, Xuanman. Watch out for the sharp ends of the skewers," a gentle voice chimed in—my mother's.
As we turned the corner into the backyard, several busy figures came into view.
Uncle Qin and my father were flipping skewers over the grill, while my sister and Jingyan, wearing gloves, were threading meat onto skewers at a table some distance away.
My mother, dressed in a long, elegant gown embroidered with delicate lotus patterns, moved with a graceful lightness, as if she had stepped out of a classical poem. Her full, ample bosom strained against the fabric of her dress, causing the delicate straps to dig into her snow-white, smooth shoulders, inadvertently revealing a hint of tantalizing allure.
With light makeup enhancing her natural beauty, my mother's face radiated a serene charm, perfectly capturing her innate elegance and gentleness. Her phoenix-like eyes, arched brows, flawless skin, and rosy cheeks all exuded an air of refined grace and wisdom.
At that moment, she wore an apron, her jade-like hands—fair and delicate as lotus roots—gracefully arranging a freshly prepared salad on the table. These hands, seemingly untouched by the toils of daily life, could effortlessly conjure up countless mouthwatering dishes, as if by magic.
With each light step, her beautiful feet in white sandals peeked in and out from beneath the hem of her gown. The straight skirt clung to her baby-soft calves, gently sliding down and creating a hazy, enchanting silhouette that was utterly captivating.
"Dad, Mom~" I called out.
"My son is here~" My mother smiled at me.
"Look at you, Qin Bin. You could've let Sister Wang handle this. Why trouble Sister Wanyi like this?" Aunt Ouyang released my arm, chiding Uncle Qin as she walked over to my mother to help with the preparations. Sister Wang was the Qin family's housekeeper.
"It's alright. I told Qin Bin we could give Sister Wang the day off today. For our little dinner, I can manage on my own," my mother replied softly to Aunt Ouyang.
Uncle Qin, who was grilling at the barbecue, gave a bitter smile to Dad beside him, not daring to say a word. Dad also responded with a meaningful, half-smiling expression.
"Dad, I've skewered them! I want to grill chicken wings!" My younger sister, holding four skewered chicken wings, cheered as she ran over to Dad. I walked over to Jingyan's side, put on gloves, and started helping her.
"By the way, aren't these things usually ready-made? Why do we have to skewer them ourselves?" I asked.
"Probably something my dad got from somewhere? I heard he went to visit an organic farm or something recently. Or maybe your mom prepared them? I'm not sure," Jingyan replied.
"Alright," I said, then glanced around before leaning closer to Jingyan and whispering, "Did Uncle Qin and Aunt Ouyang have an argument today?"
Jingyan also looked around before lowering her voice and saying, "Probably not. It's just that Dad is always like this, and Mom isn't too happy about it."
"That's good," I said, relaxing a little.
Uncle Qin's work kept him extremely busy—sometimes he wouldn't come home for half a month. In fact, every time he returned, he would invite our family over to their place to hang out. While it was called a gathering, there was also an underlying purpose: to ease Aunt Ouyang's resentment whenever Uncle Qin first came back.
Before long, Jingyan and I finished preparing everything for the barbecue.
"Brother~ try this!" My sister hugged me from behind and held a skewer of meat up to my mouth. Then she cheerfully ran off again.
[She usually works so hard with her studies—these gatherings are when she's happiest.]
Following her movements, I saw Mom and Aunt Ouyang chatting and laughing while tidying up nearby. After handing them the skewers she was holding, my sister ran over to Dad and Uncle Qin, hiding behind Dad while eyeing the sizzling meat skewers.
Unbeknownst to us, stars began to twinkle in the sky as the night grew darker.
...
"Cheers!!!"
Under the soft glow of lights and the cool summer night, the two families raised their glasses together, celebrating this joyful reunion. Uncle Qin had initially wanted to bring out his treasured fine wine, but Aunt Ouyang patted his stomach, and he quickly gave up the idea.
Mom picked up two skewers of meat, wrapped one in a flatbread for Dad, and then gave Uncle Qin a meaningful look. "Old Qin, you see, this is how you wrap the bread," she said, handing the wrapped skewer to Dad.
Uncle Qin immediately understood. Mimicking her actions, he said, "Oh, like this? Here, honey, I made one for you. Try it." He handed the wrapped skewer to Aunt Ouyang.
Aunt Ouyang took it, glanced at Uncle Qin, and nodded as she ate.
The remaining six of us breathed a collective sigh of relief.
"So, how did that project you were looking into go?" Aunt Ouyang asked Uncle Qin.
"The project still needs some follow-up. It's quite large in scale, and..." Uncle Qin began earnestly.
"Ahem!!!"
Before he could finish, Dad deliberately coughed loudly a few times and said, "Old Qin, try the cold salad Wanyi made. Hurry, eat it while it's fresh." He then pushed the salad bowl toward Uncle Qin.
Hearing Dad say that, I nearly choked on the drink I had just taken a sip of.
Uncle Qin reacted quickly, immediately changing the subject. "Right, Lanlan, have some more. There's too much meat—this will help cut the grease."
Jingyan and I exchanged glances, sharing a knowing, quiet laugh.
Dinner ended on a cheerful note. After tidying up briefly, we returned inside the villa.
Uncle Qin's villa had two floors above ground and one below. The first floor consisted of a living room, kitchen, laundry room, a maid's quarters, and a guest room—though Wang Jie, the housekeeper, didn't stay overnight. The second floor was dedicated to living and personal spaces: Uncle Qin and Aunt Ouyang's bedroom, Qin Jingyan's bedroom, and even a specially prepared bedroom for my parents. There was also Uncle Qin's study, as well as fitness areas for Aunt Ouyang and Jingyan. The basement housed entertainment facilities like a billiards table, a mahjong table, a KTV setup, and a private home theater.
