"Both of you, stop messing around!"
Akeno's shout drew the gaze of the fired-up Rias and Sona.
"What's wrong, Akeno?" Rias looked at her best friend in surprise.
She had noticed it. Ever since Akeno had started visiting that mercenary's house, her personality had undergone a subtle shift. Rias had initially thought Akeno just needed an adjustment period after accepting her bloodline, but now it seemed there was more to it.
"I'm fine. I just see things more clearly than you..."
Before she could finish, the ten-winged figure in mid-air descended, bringing an overwhelming pressure with him.
Kokabiel's sinister gaze fell upon Rias and Sona. "She's right. What you two are doing is beyond foolish. Now, hurry up and call Sirzechs and Serafall here!"
Rias and Sona looked up simultaneously.
"I will defeat you in my brother's place!"
"My sister will not come, but our Student Council will stake the honor of the Sitri family on this battle!"
"You refuse a toast only to drink a forfeit! In that case, I'll just have to kill you! They'll surely come once you're dead anyway!"
Kokabiel raised his right hand casually. A massive pillar of light manifested above his head, thick enough to be compared to a utility pole.
"Get back!"
Triggered by her sensitivity to holy light, Akeno shouted a warning. The others scattered immediately.
Boom!
With a brief whistle and a deafening explosion, the pillar of light struck their previous position, instantly obliterating the city square. When the dust cleared, a massive, scorched crater was revealed, with a spear of light still standing at its center.
The sight of that terrifying, steaming pit instantly shattered Rias and Sona's resolve to defeat Kokabiel with their own power.
"You ran? No matter. You won't dodge the next one."
Looking at the terrified girls, a look of delight finally appeared on Kokabiel's gloomy face. "Little Princess of the Gremory house, it seems you've been protected too well. you have no idea who it is you're provoking."
Provoking?
Rias was stunned. Who would provoke an opponent recorded in the Bible? Hadn't they just met today? Or had she said something wrong?
However, Kokabiel's words also sparked her anger. All her life, she hated people saying she only succeeded because of her family's power!
Without hesitation, Rias activated her Power of Destruction, draining every drop of magic from her body to unleash an energy blast far more powerful than the one used to kill the Cerberus.
"Be reduced to ash!"
The massive energy surge, laden with destructive power, roared toward Kokabiel in the sky. The high concentration of magic caused the very atmosphere to tremble.
However, Kokabiel simply extended one hand and gave a casual wave. Rias's Power of Destruction vanished in an instant.
Sona followed up immediately, the cold aura released from her hands being truly impressive. But Kokabiel gave another sharp wave, and several "chip-damage dealers" on the ground were sent flying dozens of meters by a violent gust of wind. If they hadn't deployed defensive magic in time, they would have been seriously injured.
Even so, the terrifying strength Kokabiel displayed was enough to drive anyone to despair. Forget winning—even if he stood there and did nothing, their attacks could barely scratch him.
How were they supposed to fight this?
"Boring. Since Heaven hasn't sent anyone yet, I'll start with the Underworld."
Kokabiel condensed another Light Spear. The surging holy power gathered rapidly, forming a spear even larger than the one that had destroyed the square.
Just as Kokabiel was about to hurl the spear, intending to bury Rias's group along with the entire city center...
An almost imperceptible sound echoed through the night sky.
—Clock Up.
"Hm?"
Kokabiel sensed something and instinctively looked to his right. A sudden surge of danger made the hair on his body stand on end. The giant Light Spear dissipated immediately, reforming into a normal-sized spear in his hand. In the nick of time, he held the spear horizontally against his chest.
Clang!
With a crisp metallic ring, Kokabiel was blasted out of the air. The massive force slammed him into the ground, where he crashed through several walls and skidded dozens of meters before stopping.
"Damn it! Who is it?!"
Kokabiel wasn't seriously hurt, but the footprint on his face revealed the source of his fury.
Rhode, having entered the super-acceleration domain, understood from his experience fighting Satanael that opponents of this caliber could react to fatal threats even if they couldn't keep up with his speed. However, Rhode had learned from that. While a fatal blow might be blocked, other non-lethal attacks were a different story.
Seeing Kokabiel slowly rising in his vision, Rhode closed in again. Gripping Excalibur with both hands, he lunged at the Fallen Angel's heart.
Sensing a life-threatening danger, Kokabiel—though unable to see his enemy—could clearly sense the source of the malice. A Light Spear formed instantly and shot forward. Rhode didn't dodge; seven layers of deep purple, translucent flower-shaped shields appeared before him.
The Light Spear shattered the first six layers but was completely halted by the seventh. Rhode's speed, however, remained unaffected.
Death shadowed him. Kokabiel raised his Light Spear to block the strike aimed at his heart, but the impact left his arm numb. He was utterly shocked; as a cadre of the Fallen Angels, his holy power and physical stats were at the very top tier. Yet, this brief exchange told him that his physical attributes were being completely outclassed by his attacker!
Who was this? A Devil King? A Seraph?
Kokabiel's perception should have been able to identify either of those.
Is it... a human?!
That was even more impossible! How could a mere human harm someone as noble as him?!
Boom!
In the next moment, Rhode slammed a knee into Kokabiel's chest just as he was trying to stand. The massive force hammered him back into the ground, causing the earth at the impact point to shatter into a web of cracks, sending rubble and dust flying!
Rhode knew, however, that this wasn't enough to finish Kokabiel off.
"You... bastard!"
Kokabiel, his face pressed into the dirt, was beyond livid. Light erupted from his body, and thinking the guy was going to self-destruct, Rhode quickly retreated to a safe distance.
In the next second, a massive shockwave swept outward. Taking the opportunity, Kokabiel finally stood up again. He wiped the blood from the corner of his mouth, his hunched posture making him look incredibly battered.
