Chapter 50 - Blood on White Marble

The rain followed them all the way back to the tower.

Neither of them spoke during the drive.

Elena sat in the passenger seat of Adrian's car, her hands clasped tightly in her lap, watching the blurred lights of the city pass through the rain-streaked window. Every reflection seemed distorted, stretched into strange shapes by the water sliding down the glass.

Her mind was racing.

The alley.

The man.

The fear in his voice.

And Adrian standing there so calmly, as if the situation had been completely ordinary.

Nothing about it felt ordinary to her.

She had always known Adrian lived in a world of power and influence. That had been obvious from the moment she stepped into Volkov Tower for the first time.

But power in boardrooms was one thing.

What she had seen tonight was something else entirely.

Something darker.

Something that didn't belong in the same world as music halls and charity galas.

The car finally slowed as it approached the towering glass entrance of Volkov Tower.

The building rose into the stormy sky like a dark mirror, its upper floors glowing softly through the rain.

Elena hadn't expected to come here tonight.

In fact, she had expected Adrian to take her home.

Instead, he had driven them here without asking.

The car rolled to a smooth stop beneath the covered entrance.

The rain hammered against the pavement outside.

For a moment, neither of them moved.

Then Adrian turned off the engine.

"You shouldn't have seen that," he said quietly.

Elena looked at him.

"You keep saying that."

"And it's still true."

She searched his face, trying to understand the man sitting beside her.

"How many things are there that I 'shouldn't see'?"

Adrian didn't answer.

Instead, he stepped out of the car and walked around to her side, opening the door.

Elena hesitated before getting out.

The cold night air hit her immediately, the rain misting around the entrance as they stepped inside the towering lobby.

The marble floors gleamed under the soft lighting.

Everything looked exactly as it always did.

Elegant.

Controlled.

Civilized.

But Elena couldn't shake the feeling that she had just seen what existed beneath the surface.

Adrian led her toward the private elevator.

Two security guards standing nearby straightened immediately when they saw him.

"Sir."

Adrian nodded once.

The elevator doors opened smoothly.

They stepped inside.

As the doors closed, Elena felt the silence settle around them again.

The elevator began rising.

Floor after floor passed quietly.

Finally, Elena spoke.

"That man… what will happen to him?"

Adrian's gaze remained fixed on the elevator display.

"That depends."

"On what?"

"On whether he cooperates."

Her stomach tightened.

"Cooperates with what?"

Adrian didn't answer.

The elevator doors opened on the executive floor.

The hallway beyond was quiet and dimly lit.

They stepped out.

Elena followed him down the corridor, her footsteps echoing faintly against the polished floor.

"Adrian."

He stopped walking.

But he didn't turn around.

"Elena," he said quietly, "you don't want the answers to the questions you're asking."

"That's not your decision to make."

He finally turned to face her.

His expression was calm.

But there was tension beneath the surface now.

"Yes, it is."

"Why?"

"Because once you know…"

He paused.

"…you can't unknow it."

Elena folded her arms.

"That sounds very dramatic."

"It's realistic."

She stared at him.

"You had someone taken away tonight."

"Yes."

"And you're acting like that's normal."

"For me, it is."

The blunt honesty made her breath catch.

For a moment neither of them spoke.

Then Elena said quietly,

"Who are you really, Adrian?"

Before he could answer, the sound of raised voices echoed down the hallway.

Both of them turned.

Three men were approaching from the far end of the corridor.

Two of them Elena recognized immediately.

Lucas, and

Marcus.

The other man was being dragged forward by two security guards.

Elena froze.

It was the same man from the alley.

His clothes were soaked from the rain.

His face was pale with panic.

"What is this?" Elena whispered.

Marcus stopped when he saw them.

His expression shifted immediately.

"Sir."

Adrian's voice was calm.

"Why is he here?"

Marcus glanced briefly at Elena before answering.

"He insisted on speaking to you."

The man suddenly struggled against the guards.

"Please!" he shouted.

"I'll give it back!"

Elena flinched slightly at the desperation in his voice.

Marcus's expression remained cold.

"You already had your chance."

The man turned toward Adrian, panic flooding his face.

"You can't do this! I have a family!"

Adrian's eyes remained unreadable.

"You should have thought about that before you stole from me."

"I didn't steal!" the man shouted.

"I borrowed!"

The silence that followed felt heavy.

Marcus sighed slightly.

"This conversation is going nowhere."

Adrian nodded once.

"Take him downstairs."

The guards began pulling the man toward the elevator.

Suddenly he twisted violently in their grip.

One of the guards lost his hold.

In the chaos that followed, something metallic flashed in the hallway lights.

A knife.

Elena gasped.

The man lunged forward wildly.

The next moment happened too fast for her mind to fully process.

Marcus moved first.

There was a sharp struggle.

A crash against the marble floor.

And then,

Blood.

A thin red line spread slowly across the white marble beneath the man's body.

The hallway fell silent.

Elena stared.

Her ears rang as the reality of what had just happened settled over her.

Marcus stepped back slowly, breathing hard.

The knife clattered across the floor.

The guards grabbed the man again, restraining him completely now.

But Elena couldn't look away from the blood.

Bright red.

Against spotless white marble.

Her stomach twisted violently.

"Take him out of here," Lucas ordered sharply.

The guards dragged the man toward the elevator again.

This time he didn't fight.

Within seconds they were gone.

Leaving only silence behind.

Elena's hands were trembling.

She looked up slowly at Adrian.

"You said this world was dangerous."

Her voice shook slightly.

"But you didn't tell me it looked like this."

Adrian watched her carefully.

"I tried to keep you away from it."

Her eyes met his.

"You failed."

Neither of them spoke for several seconds.

Finally Elena whispered,

"What kind of world are you living in?"

Adrian's expression darkened slightly.

"The kind you should leave before it's too late."

But Elena was already realizing something terrifying.

It might already be too late.

Because now she had seen it.

The truth hidden beneath the polished glass towers and elegant parties.

And once someone saw that truth,

It never disappeared again.
