Chapter 14 - A Test Of Authority- chapter 14

The morning sun was bright, but Hana's stomach twisted with nerves. A messenger had just arrived, out of breath, carrying a letter marked urgent.

Read it carefully, Seraphina whispered in her mind.

Hana took the letter with trembling hands and unfolded it.

"My Lady, a small fire has broken out in the northern storage barn. No injuries reported, but some grain may be lost. Immediate action required."

Hana's eyes went wide. Fire?! Grain?! Disaster!

Calm yourself. Panic will make this worse. Seraphina's voice was steady, almost soothing. You must act decisively.

"…Okay. Decide. Fast," Hana muttered to herself.

Step one: assess the situation.

Hana took a deep breath. Alright… What can I do?

Delegate. Seraphina's guidance was light but firm.

"…Right!" Hana shouted, gathering herself. "Kale! Northern barn! Fire! Go!"

Kale nodded immediately, already moving with practiced efficiency.

"My Lady, should I call the firefighting staff?"

Hana paused, feeling a wave of doubt. Do I know what to do here?

Trust your instincts, but consider efficiency.

"…Yes! Call the staff, but only enough to handle the fire quickly—don't waste resources," Hana ordered.

Good. Seraphina's praise was faint but noticeable. Now, check for consequences.

Hana glanced at the nearby ledger of grain stores. If some grain is lost, how much can the estate spare? She flipped through the numbers, her brow furrowing. Hmm… maybe enough for one month, not more.

Correct. Communicate limits clearly.

Hana scribbled a quick note to the warehouse staff:

"Prioritize extinguishing the fire. Save as much grain as possible. Any losses are to be reported immediately. Resource usage must remain efficient."

Well done. Seraphina's voice carried approval. You have delegated, assessed, and communicated effectively.

Hana took a shaky breath, feeling slightly braver. Then came a small hiccup. One of the junior staff members rushed in, eyes wide.

"My Lady! We've found the barn cat trapped inside!"

Hana froze. A cat?!

Decide quickly, Seraphina prompted. Human life takes priority, then the estate's assets, then… the cat.

"…Rescue the cat if it's safe, but do not endanger anyone," Hana instructed, trying to sound firm.

Kale shot her a brief glance. Understood, My Lady. He moved swiftly to ensure the rescue could be done safely.

By mid-morning, the fire was extinguished, minor grain damage accounted for, and the cat was safely rescued, sitting on a windowsill and licking its paw. Hana sank into the chair, her small hands trembling from adrenaline.

"…I… I actually did it," she whispered.

Yes. Seraphina's voice was calm, but Hana felt warmth behind it. You made decisions, delegated authority, and handled an emergency without panicking. Your actions were effective.

Hana smiled faintly. Even with the cat drama… I think I'm getting the hang of this.

Careful, Seraphina warned lightly. Growth is a path, not a destination.

Hana nodded. Yeah… step by step.

The estate staff began filing back into the hall, offering respectful bows and murmurs of gratitude. Hana straightened her shoulders, trying to look as composed as Seraphina would.

"…Maybe I can really do this," Hana muttered under her breath.

Yes. Seraphina's voice was quiet, approving. And soon, you may even make choices without me having to guide every step.

Hana felt a spark of pride and excitement. The estate was enormous, the responsibilities daunting—but for the first time, she felt that she could face them.

And with Seraphina by her side, guiding quietly, she realized that even a chaotic eleven-year-old could wield the authority of a twenty-five-year-old villainess… and maybe even survive.
