That evening Emily stayed late in the office.
The building was quiet.
Most employees had already gone home.
She sat at her desk staring at the city lights outside the window.
Alexander stepped out of his office.
"You're still here."
Emily didn't turn around.
"I'm thinking."
Alexander walked closer.
"About what?"
Emily finally looked at him.
"This whole situation."
She continued quietly.
"Maybe the board is right."
Alexander frowned.
"What do you mean?"
Emily sighed.
"Maybe I should leave the company."
Alexander's expression hardened instantly.
"No."
Emily looked surprised.
"I'm causing problems for you."
Alexander shook his head.
"You're not the problem."
Emily laughed sadly.
"Tell that to the entire internet."
Alexander stepped closer.
His voice became serious.
"I won't let you quit because of rumors."
Emily looked at him carefully.
"Why not?"
Alexander paused for a moment.
Then he said quietly,
"Because you matter."
Emily's heart skipped.
Those three words felt heavier than anything else he had said before.
