Chapter 11 - The Name They Fear

The rain hadn't stopped.

It followed them through the city like a shadow that refused to disappear.

Liora walked beside Adrian in silence, her steps slower now after everything that had happened. The adrenaline was fading, replaced by exhaustion.

Streetlights flickered above them.

The roads were nearly empty.

Only the distant hum of cars and the sound of rain filled the night.

"Where are we going?" she finally asked.

"Somewhere temporary," Adrian replied.

"That doesn't sound reassuring."

"It's not supposed to."

Liora sighed softly but kept walking.

After a few more minutes, Adrian turned into a narrow street lined with small, closed shops. At the end of it stood a modest building with dim lights on the second floor.

He stopped.

"This will do."

Liora looked up.

"You just pick places randomly?"

"I pick places that won't attract attention."

They went inside.

The room they entered was small.

Barely furnished.

A single bed.

A chair.

A small table near the window.

It wasn't much.

But it was dry.

Safe… at least for now.

Liora dropped her bag onto the chair and sat down heavily on the edge of the bed.

"I think I'm officially done running for today."

Adrian closed the door and checked the lock carefully.

"You don't get that luxury anymore."

She groaned.

"Can you try being comforting for once?"

"No."

She rolled her eyes.

"Figures."

For a moment, silence filled the room again.

Then Liora looked at him.

"Adrian."

He glanced at her.

"You said those people… they were from your old organization."

"Yes."

"What kind of organization is it?"

Adrian leaned against the wall near the window.

His expression darkened slightly.

"The kind that operates in the shadows."

"That's vague."

"It's meant to be."

Liora crossed her arms.

"I deserve to know."

He studied her face for a moment.

Then he spoke.

"They deal in information, weapons, assassinations… anything that requires silence and precision."

Her breath caught.

"So… killers."

"Yes."

The word hung heavy in the air.

"And you were one of them."

"I was one of the best."

Liora felt a chill run down her spine.

She believed him.

Not because he sounded proud.

But because she had seen it.

The way he moved.

The way he fought.

The way he didn't hesitate.

"Why did you leave?" she asked quietly.

Adrian looked away for a moment.

Then back at her.

"I was given an order."

"What kind of order?"

Silence.

Then—

"To eliminate a target."

"That's… normal for you, right?"

"It was different."

His voice dropped slightly.

"The target wasn't a threat."

Liora frowned.

"Then why—"

"They don't care about reasons," Adrian cut in.

"They care about control."

Something in his tone made her sit up straighter.

"So you refused."

"Yes."

"And they tried to kill you for it."

"They don't allow people to walk away."

The room felt colder again.

Liora wrapped her arms around herself slightly.

"And now… they're coming after you."

"And anyone connected to me."

His eyes met hers.

Which meant—

Her.

Liora exhaled slowly.

"Great."

Adrian pushed himself off the wall and walked toward the table.

He opened a drawer and pulled out a small object.

Metal.

Sleek.

He placed it on the table.

Liora stood and walked closer.

"What is that?"

"A tracker."

Her eyes widened.

"They're tracking you?"

"They were."

He crushed the device under his hand.

The metal snapped with a sharp crack.

"They won't anymore."

Liora stared at the broken pieces.

"These people are insane."

"They're efficient."

She looked back at him.

"So what happens now?"

Adrian didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he picked up his jacket and reached into one of the inner pockets.

He pulled out something small.

A thin black card.

He held it for a moment before placing it on the table.

Liora leaned closer.

There was a symbol engraved on it.

Sharp.

Minimal.

Dangerous.

Underneath it—

A name.

Not Adrian.

Something else.

Her eyes narrowed.

"What is that?"

Adrian's expression hardened slightly.

"My identity… in that world."

She picked up the card carefully.

"What does it say?"

He hesitated.

Then—

"Raven."

The word sent a strange chill through her.

"Raven?" she repeated.

"They didn't use real names," he explained.

"Only codenames."

"And yours is Raven."

A faint shadow crossed his face.

"It was."

Liora looked at the card again.

Then back at him.

"Why does that sound like something people fear?"

Adrian didn't respond.

But the silence itself was the answer.

Liora swallowed.

"You're not just anyone in that organization… are you?"

He met her gaze.

"No."

"How bad is it?"

Adrian exhaled slowly.

"Let's just say…"

His voice turned colder.

"They don't send teams after ordinary people."

The realization hit her instantly.

Those men.

The ones chasing him.

The ones trying to kill him.

They weren't just after a runaway member.

They were after someone important.

Someone dangerous.

Someone they couldn't afford to let live.

Liora's grip tightened slightly around the card.

"Raven…" she whispered.

Adrian stepped closer.

Then gently took the card from her hand.

"That name stays in the past."

"And if it doesn't?"

His eyes darkened.

"Then people die."

Silence.

The rain outside softened slightly, turning into a steady drizzle.

Liora looked at him.

Not just as the man who saved her.

But as someone far more complex.

More dangerous.

More broken.

"Adrian," she said quietly.

He looked at her.

"You're not that person anymore… right?"

For the first time—

He didn't answer immediately.

Then he said softly—

"I'm trying not to be."

Something in her chest tightened.

Without thinking, she stepped closer.

"You don't have to do this alone."

Adrian looked at her.

Really looked at her.

And for a brief moment—

The coldness in his eyes softened.

Just slightly.

Then—

A sudden noise broke the silence.

A phone.

Vibrating.

Both of them froze.

Adrian's gaze snapped toward the table.

The sound wasn't coming from his phone.

Slowly…

He reached into his jacket.

And pulled out a device.

Not his.

One of the attackers must have planted it.

The screen lit up.

Unknown number.

Incoming call.

Liora's heart raced.

"Don't answer it," she whispered.

Adrian stared at the screen.

Then—

He answered.

Silence.

Then a voice spoke from the other side.

Calm.

Cold.

Familiar.

"Raven."

Adrian's expression turned deadly.

"I was wondering when you'd call."

A soft chuckle echoed through the speaker.

"You've caused quite a mess."

Liora felt a chill run through her entire body.

The voice continued.

"You should have followed orders."

Adrian's grip tightened on the phone.

"Give me a reason not to come find you."

The voice laughed quietly.

"Oh, I already found you."

Adrian's eyes narrowed.

"What?"

A pause.

Then—

"You should look outside."

The call ended.

Silence filled the room.

Slowly…

Adrian turned toward the window.

Liora followed.

And when she looked outside—

Her breath stopped.

Black cars.

Parked along the street.

Men stepping out.

One by one.

Looking up.

At their window.

They had been found.

Again.
