"He's going home now," I said hurriedly, pushing Christian gently toward his car. "See you later," I muttered as I shut the door for him. Then I caught my grandfather's hand and intertwined our fingers.
"But…" My grandfather started again. "I haven't even spoken to him yet. Why are you—"
"I'll tell you all about him inside. It's getting cold out here," I lied, trying to distract him. "You should be careful with your health."
The mention of his health did the trick, and he stopped arguing. His gaze followed the car as it drove away from the mansion.
I could have introduced Christian to him right then and there, but something had held me back. I couldn't figure out exactly why it felt so difficult. Maybe it was because this relationship was fake and would end eventually. Or maybe it was because I was too scared to admit—to myself—how real that almost-kiss had felt.
