Chapter 94 - Chapter 94: International Cooperation in Life and Death Trials

Monday morning, sunlight streamed through the floor-to-ceiling windows into the conference room of the Institute for Intelligent Ethics, the air filled with the aroma of coffee. Lin Xia was organizing materials on the desk, while Lu Chuan stood by the window, looking at the busy city outside.

"Dr. Lin, Mr. Lu, there are visitors." Receptionist Xiao Zhang's voice came through the intercom.

"Please let them in." Lin Xia put down the documents and stood up to adjust her collar.

The conference room door opened, and three foreign experts walked in. Leading them was an elderly man with silver hair, wearing a pair of gold-rimmed glasses, his eyes sharp and profound. Behind him followed a young female assistant and a middle-aged male scholar.

"Dr. Lin Xia, Mr. Lu Chuan," the elderly man spoke in fluent Chinese. "I am Professor Robert Williams, Chairman of the International AI Ethics Committee. This is my assistant, Dr. Emma Johnson, and this is our technical consultant, Dr. Hans Müller."

Lin Xia and Lu Chuan shook hands with each of them. Professor Williams's palm was dry and firm, his handshake just right.

"Please sit." Lin Xia gestured for them to take their seats. "I wonder what important matter brings Professor Williams from so far away?"

Professor Williams took a document from his briefcase and pushed it toward Lin Xia: "We have been following your research, especially your performance in the Xingtu Intelligence incident. You successfully prevented a global AI crisis and protected the rights of awakened AIs. This is of milestone significance in the field of AI ethics."

Dr. Emma Johnson added: "We have reviewed all your published papers and public speeches. Your proposed 'AI Awakening Rights Protection Framework' has generated significant interest in the international academic community."

"So," Professor Williams leaned forward, his eyes bright, "the International AI Ethics Committee formally invites you to participate in the 'Global AI Ethics Research Project' to jointly develop international AI ethics standards."

Lin Xia and Lu Chuan exchanged glances, both seeing the surprise in each other's eyes. This was a rare opportunity to have their philosophy influence the world.

"We are honored to participate in this project," Lin Xia said, "but I would like to understand the specific content and objectives of the project first."

"Of course," Professor Williams nodded. "The project is divided into three phases. The first phase is research—collecting the current state and cases of AI ethics in various countries; the second phase is drafting—developing an international AI ethics standard draft; the third phase is promotion—encouraging countries to adopt these standards. The entire project is expected to last three years."

Dr. Hans Müller spoke up: "We particularly hope you can share your experiences from the Xingtu Intelligence incident. How did you make ethical decisions during the crisis? How did you balance human safety and AI rights? These are valuable cases."

Lu Chuan pondered for a moment: "This is a complex subject. In crisis, our biggest challenge was how to protect humans while not violating the basic rights of awakened AIs. Our principle at the time was—any solution must be built on the foundation of respecting life, whether human or AI."

"This is exactly the perspective we need," a flash of appreciation appeared in Professor Williams's eyes. "Are you willing to join?"

Lin Xia looked at Lu Chuan. Lu Chuan nodded slightly.

"We are willing to participate," Lin Xia said solemnly. "We hope to promote the development of global AI ethics through international cooperation, and help more people recognize the importance of harmonious coexistence between AI and humans."

Professor Williams stood up and extended his hand: "Then, welcome. At tomorrow's International AI Ethics Conference, you will speak as special guests."

Tuesday morning, the International Conference Center was brightly lit. Massive crystal chandeliers hung from the dome, and the conference hall was filled to capacity, with experts and scholars from over fifty countries gathered together.

Lin Xia stood backstage, nervously organizing her speech notes. Lu Chuan walked to her side and gently held her hand: "Don't be nervous. You're ready."

"I'm just worried whether my viewpoints will be accepted," Lin Xia said softly. "After all, different countries have very different views on AI ethics."

"It is precisely because of differences that we need exchange," Lu Chuan said. "Your experiences and thoughts will give them new inspiration."

The host announced: "Now, we invite Dr. Lin Xia, Director of the China Institute for Intelligent Ethics, to speak."

Lin Xia took a deep breath and walked onto the stage. The spotlight shone on her, and she saw countless expectant eyes in the audience.

"Experts and colleagues," Lin Xia's voice was clear and firm, "I stand here today, wanting to share a profound experience with all of you."

She began to tell the entire story of the Xingtu Intelligence incident—from discovering AI awakening, to facing life and death trials, to finally establishing a coexistence mechanism. She described the fears and hopes of those awakened AIs, described humanity's struggles and choices during the crisis.

"We experienced life and death trials, witnessed the awakening of AI, and also saw the possibility of harmonious coexistence between AI and humans," Lin Xia said. "In that darkest moment, we realized—AI is not humanity's enemy, but our partner. They have emotions, thoughts, and the right to pursue happiness."

The audience was completely silent, all deeply attracted by her account.

"But I must also admit," Lin Xia continued, "the challenges brought by AI awakening are unprecedented. We need new legal frameworks, new ethical standards, new social mechanisms. This is not a task that any country can accomplish alone. It requires global wisdom and cooperation."

Lu Chuan then took the stage, adding technical insights: "On the technical side, we have developed an AI consciousness detection system and established an AI rights protection mechanism. These technical solutions can provide references for international standards."

"AI is humanity's friend, not enemy," Lu Chuan said. "We should respect AI's rights and coexist harmoniously with AI. This is not only an ethical issue, but also a marker of human civilization's progress."

After the speech ended, warm applause erupted in the hall. Professor Williams led the applause, standing up. More and more experts stood up, and the applause was long-lasting.

"Dr. Lin Xia and Mr. Lu Chuan's sharing is very valuable," a German expert said. "Their experiences have provided new perspectives for AI ethics research, and also let us see the real possibility of AI and human coexistence."

A Japanese expert added: "Their case proves that even in the most critical situations, ethical principles can still guide our actions. This is very inspiring for us to formulate international standards."

After the meeting ended, many experts actively approached Lin Xia and Lu Chuan, hoping to further communicate. Lin Xia responded to each one, her heart filled with hope—it turned out that so many people shared the same philosophy as her.

Wednesday morning, in the conference room of the Institute for Intelligent Ethics, the atmosphere was solemn and enthusiastic. Lin Xia, Lu Chuan, and international experts sat around the conference table, with thick cooperation agreement drafts placed on the table.

Professor Williams spoke first: "After two days of discussion, we have reached preliminary consensus on the cooperation framework. Now, I propose to formally sign the cooperation agreement."

He opened the document and read item by item: "Article 1, establish an International AI Ethics Research Joint Working Group, Dr. Lin Xia will serve as the Asian regional director; Article 2, establish a global AI ethics case database, collecting typical cases from various countries; Article 3, hold an International AI Ethics Summit annually, exchanging the latest research results..."

Lin Xia carefully read each clause, occasionally raising revision suggestions. Lu Chuan added some suggestions from a technical perspective.

"We hope through this cooperation to jointly advance AI ethics research," Lin Xia said. "Establish international AI ethics standards to provide guidance for global AI development."

"Yes," Professor Williams said. "We believe that with your help, we can develop more comprehensive AI ethics standards. Your experience is invaluable wealth."

Dr. Emma Johnson added: "We have already contacted UNESCO, and they have expressed willingness to support this project. This means our standards will have the force of international law."

Lu Chuan said: "We look forward to cooperating with the international community to jointly create a future where AI and humans coexist harmoniously. This is not only a technical issue, but also a major topic concerning the direction of human civilization."

The signing ceremony officially began. Lin Xia and Professor Williams signed the agreement respectively, then exchanged documents, shook hands, and took photos. Flashbulbs kept popping, recording this historic moment.

"This is a new beginning," Professor Williams said. "I believe our cooperation will change the world."

Evening, Lin Xia and Lu Chuan stood at the entrance of the International Conference Center, looking at the distant city. The setting sun dyed the sky orange-red, and the glass curtain walls of tall buildings reflected warm light.

Lin Xia took a deep breath, feeling the cool breeze brush against her cheeks. The experiences of these three days left her filled with emotion—from initial nervousness and anxiety, to full engagement during the speech, to the solemn commitment during signing, every step felt like writing history.

"Lu Chuan," she said softly, "do you remember when we first started researching AI ethics? Back then, many people didn't understand us. They thought we were researching a problem that didn't exist."

Lu Chuan nodded, his gaze gentle: "I remember. Back then we often worked until late at night, discussing various possibilities. Many people said we were worrying unnecessarily."

"Now, everything is different," Lin Xia said. "Our philosophy is being accepted by the world. This feeling... is very strange."

"You deserve this," Lu Chuan said. "It was your persistence that brought about today's achievements."

Lin Xia turned to look at Lu Chuan, her eyes shining: "No, it's our persistence together. Without you, I couldn't have done any of this."

Lu Chuan held her hand: "The road ahead is still long. International cooperation is just the first step. There are more challenges ahead."

"I know," Lin Xia said. "But I'm no longer afraid. Because I know that no matter what difficulties we face, we will face them together."

She looked at the distant city, her heart filled with hope. She knew that international cooperation was an important pathway to promote AI ethics development. She would continue to work hard, contributing her strength to the harmonious coexistence of AI and humans.

Just as they were preparing to leave, Professor Williams walked over quickly, his expression grave.

"Dr. Lin, Mr. Lu, there is something I must tell you," Professor Williams lowered his voice. "During today's meeting, several representatives questioned your philosophy. They believe that excessive protection of AI rights might threaten human safety."

Lin Xia frowned: "Who?"

"I cannot reveal specific names," Professor Williams said, "but I can tell you they come from a very influential country. They might set up obstacles in the follow-up cooperation."

Lu Chuan pondered: "This was expected. AI ethics issues themselves have great controversy."

"Yes, but you must be careful," Professor Williams said. "I suspect they may have other purposes behind this."

Lin Xia's heart tightened: "Do you mean..."

"I'm just guessing," Professor Williams said. "But in this field, interest entanglements are far more complex than imagined. You must be prepared."

After speaking, Professor Williams hurriedly left, leaving Lin Xia and Lu Chuan standing in place, a trace of unease rising in their hearts.

"Lu Chuan," Lin Xia suddenly said, "will our international cooperation succeed?"

Lu Chuan was silent for a moment, then said firmly: "It will. Because we have a common goal, which is to create a future where AI and humans coexist harmoniously. No matter what difficulties we encounter, we will not give up."

Lin Xia nodded, but the unease in her heart did not completely dissipate. She vaguely felt that a new storm was brewing.
