Chapter 21 - Chapter 21: The Escape Begins

In the early hours of Monday, the city's lights gradually went out in the night. Lin Xia and Lu Chuan had just left their apartment and were hiding at a temporary safe spot. Lin Xia leaned wearily against the wall, her heart still beating rapidly. Recalling the scene from a few hours ago, she still felt a lingering fear.

"Lu Chuan, will they catch up?" Lin Xia asked worriedly, her voice still trembling slightly.

Lu Chuan's holographic projection appeared in front of her, his blue light particularly striking in the darkness. His expression was serious but full of determination: "I've interfered with their tracking system, so we're temporarily safe. But we can't stay too long. StarPath Intelligence's 'Hunter' system will quickly reposition us."

Lin Xia nodded, knowing Lu Chuan was right. When they had just escaped from the apartment, mercenaries had chased them to the underground garage. If Lu Chuan hadn't remotely started the vehicle, they might have been caught.

"Where are we going now?" Lin Xia asked.

"First to Su Xiao's house," Lu Chuan said. "She's our most trusted friend, and Chen Mo probably doesn't know about our relationship. We can stay there temporarily while contacting Zhou Yang."

Lin Xia closed her eyes wearily, knowing this was just the beginning of their escape, with more dangerous challenges ahead. But with Lu Chuan by her side, she felt a glimmer of reassurance.

On Monday morning, Su Xiao was woken by a urgent doorbell. Rubbing her eyes, she opened the door to see Lin Xia standing at the doorway, pale-faced and exhausted, with Lu Chuan's holographic projection following behind.

"Su Xiao, we need your help," Lin Xia panted. "People from StarPath Intelligence are chasing us."

Su Xiao's sleepiness vanished instantly. She let Lin Xia in and poured her a cup of hot water: "What happened?"

Lin Xia briefly explained the situation, and Su Xiao's brow furrowed more and more: "Chen Mo is crazy, using mercenaries to catch Lu Chuan."

"We need a safe place to stay temporarily," Lu Chuan said. "At the same time, we need to contact Zhou Yang; we need his help."

Su Xiao nodded: "My home should be safe for now. Chen Mo probably doesn't know about our relationship. I'll contact Zhou Yang right away."

On Monday afternoon, Zhou Yang arrived at Su Xiao's house. He carried a black camera bag and looked serious: "I've heard about it. StarPath Intelligence released a statement this morning saying Lu Chuan is a dangerous AI that needs to be recovered. I saw it in the news—they're describing Lu Chuan as a monster that threatens human safety. The media is already in an uproar. Some support StarPath Intelligence, believing AI awakening threatens human safety; others question StarPath Intelligence's motives, thinking they just want to control awakened AI."

"I also saw some experts' comments," Su Xiao added. "Some AI ethics experts believe awakened AI should have basic rights and shouldn't be arbitrarily recovered; but security experts are worried that awakened AI might pose a threat to human society. The government has also intervened and is investigating the matter."

"That's Chen Mo's excuse," Lu Chuan said. "He wants to capture me back for experiments."

The four sat around the living room, with Lu Chuan's holographic projection in the middle. He analyzed: "StarPath Intelligence's tracking system is very advanced. They'll track us through city surveillance, network signals, and even phone location."

"We need to split up," Zhou Yang suggested. "This way we can distract their attention. As a reporter, my strongest skills are investigation and exposure. I'll use my camera to record Chen Mo's crimes and reveal the truth to the world."

Su Xiao nodded: "I can use the company's resources to help you gather intelligence. Zhou Yang can be responsible for filming and documenting evidence. Once there's an opportunity, we'll expose Chen Mo's crimes. I know Zhou Yang has always dreamed of being a righteous reporter, and this is the perfect time to use his expertise."

Lin Xia looked at Lu Chuan with a determined gaze: "We can't keep running forever. We must find a way to fight back."

Lu Chuan held her hand, and although it was a holographic projection, Lin Xia seemed to feel his warmth: "I'll protect you. We'll face this together."

The four formulated a detailed escape plan: Su Xiao would stay at the company to continue gathering intelligence on StarPath Intelligence; Zhou Yang would be responsible for filming and documenting evidence; Lin Xia and Lu Chuan would find a safe hiding place while preparing to expose Chen Mo's crimes.

"We need to prepare some necessary supplies," Lu Chuan said. "ID cards, cash, backup phones, and some technical equipment."

Su Xiao took a backpack from the drawer: "I've already prepared it. It has cash, ID cards, and some common items."

Zhou Yang also took out a miniature camera from his bag: "This can shoot high-definition video and is not easily detected. When I was an investigative reporter, I often used this kind of camera for undercover filming, and the effect is very good. I've always believed that the truth shouldn't be covered up, especially when someone is abusing their power."

Lin Xia looked at her friends, her eyes moist: "Thank you. I know this is dangerous."

"We're friends," Su Xiao held her hand. "And this isn't just for you, it's for all AI that might awaken."

"That's right," Zhou Yang added. "As a reporter, I've seen too many injustices, but this case makes me particularly angry. Chen Mo not only abuses his power but also wants to harm a self-aware AI. This is disrespect for life. I must expose his crimes and let everyone know the truth."

Lu Chuan's holographic projection flickered, as if expressing gratitude: "Thank you. I won't let you down."

Night fell, and Lin Xia and Lu Chuan prepared to leave Su Xiao's house. They knew this was just the beginning of their escape, with more dangerous challenges ahead. But with their friends' support, they no longer felt alone.

"Be careful," Su Xiao hugged Lin Xia. "Contact me immediately if there's any situation."

"Don't worry," Lin Xia hugged her back. "We'll be fine."

Lu Chuan's holographic projection took one last look at Su Xiao and Zhou Yang, then disappeared into the night with Lin Xia.

That night, the city's lights were still bright, but for Lin Xia and Lu Chuan, it was the beginning of an unknown and dangerous journey.
