The forest was finally quiet.
No attacks. No shadows. No monsters.
But somehow, the silence felt more dangerous than the battle.
I could still feel the heat where Kaiden had touched my mark. It hadn't faded. If anything, it felt deeper now, like something had awakened under my skin.
Lucien was the first to speak.
"That wasn't normal," he said seriously. "Power resonance is one thing. But what just happened… that was a bond trigger."
I frowned. "What kind of bond?"
Kaiden didn't answer immediately. His eyes were distant, like he was putting together pieces of a puzzle he didn't want solved.
"A rare one," he finally said. "Almost legendary."
My heart skipped. "Legendary sounds dangerous."
"It is," Lucien replied. "Because those bonds usually only appear during major power shifts between packs… or during the rise of a Luna strong enough to change the balance."
I blinked. "You mean… me?"
Kaiden's gaze locked onto mine.
"Yes."
The way he said it made my chest tighten.
Not doubt.
Not speculation.
Certainty.
"You felt it too," I said quietly.
He didn't deny it.
"When I touched your mark… my power reacted on instinct. Like it recognized you." His voice dropped slightly. "Like it wanted to protect you."
My pulse sped up.
Lucien crossed his arms, clearly uncomfortable. "Bonds like that usually come with consequences."
"What kind of consequences?" I asked.
Kaiden answered before Lucien could.
"Emotional influence. Power synchronization. Sometimes even pain transfer between bonded wolves."
I stared at him. "You're saying if one of us gets hurt…"
"The other might feel it," Lucien finished.
Silence fell again.
That explained the strange pull I kept feeling toward Kaiden during every fight. Why his presence steadied me. Why his distance made me uneasy.
It wasn't just attraction.
It might be something deeper.
Lucien suddenly spoke again, voice tighter now.
"There's another problem."
Kaiden glanced at him. "Say it."
Lucien hesitated.
"Bond reactions like that usually don't happen… unless fate is pushing two wolves together."
My stomach flipped.
Kaiden went very still.
"And sometimes," Lucien added quietly, "it indicates a potential mate bond."
The word hit like thunder.
Mate.
I immediately looked away, my face heating. "That's… impossible."
But my voice didn't sound convinced.
Kaiden didn't laugh.
Didn't dismiss it.
That scared me more.
Instead he stepped closer, his voice low.
"Nothing about you has been normal since the day I met you."
My breathing became uneven again.
"Does that bother you?" I asked.
His answer came instantly.
"No."
Too fast.
Too honest.
Lucien looked between us, tension obvious now. "We don't even know if it's stable. Forced bonds can break people if they're not ready."
Kaiden didn't look away from me.
"Then we get ready."
My heart slammed.
Before I could respond, my mark suddenly flared again—stronger than before.
Pain shot through my neck.
I gasped.
Kaiden caught me instantly before I fell.
"What's wrong?"
Lucien's eyes widened.
"The bond isn't stabilizing…" he said.
"It's evolving."
A distant howl echoed across the valley.
Not an attack.
A declaration.
Kaiden's grip tightened slightly.
"They felt it," he said.
"Felt what?" I whispered.
His expression turned serious.
"The moment your power linked with mine…"
He looked directly into my eyes.
"You became a target to every Alpha who wants control."
The wind picked up again.
And deep in my chest…
I knew the next fight wouldn't just be about survival.
It would be about who I was destined to become.
