I heard the door open before I saw him.


The wooden hinges let out a low creak, slow and heavy, like the door itself was thick and old. The sound cut through the quiet room, making every muscle in my body tense instantly. My heart jumped into my throat as I turned toward the doorway.


For a second, all I could see was darkness beyond the threshold.


The candlelight shifted when the door opened wider, the flame trembling as a faint breeze slipped into the room. The shadows moved across the walls—and across him.
