🌌 STARLOST
Episode 4 — "Signals in the Dark"
The town wakes up like any other morning.
Shops open.
Students rush to school.
Traffic hums through the streets.
But something invisible has changed.
Phones lose signal for a few seconds.
Radios crackle.
Satellites above Earth quietly shift their angles.
No one notices.
Except Nova.
---
At school, Nova sits by the window again.
But today he isn't watching the sky.
He's listening.
His eyes close slightly.
Aira taps his desk.
"Earth to Nova."
He opens his eyes.
"They are closer."
Aira sighs.
"You've said that like five times today."
Nova shakes his head.
"No. This time… it's different."
---
During lunch break, Aira drags Nova to the rooftop of the school.
"Okay, explain."
Nova looks out over the city.
"When my people search for something… they do not rush."
"They surround."
Aira crosses her arms.
"That sounds comforting."
Nova continues calmly.
"They are placing observers."
Aira blinks.
"Observers?"
Nova nods.
"Units hidden among your population."
Aira's eyes widen.
"You mean… like that guy in the park?"
Nova looks serious.
"Yes."
---
Later that evening, the town feels strangely quiet.
Streetlights flicker.
The air feels heavy.
Aira and Nova walk home together.
Nova suddenly stops.
Again.
Aira groans.
"Let me guess. We're not alone?"
Nova nods slowly.
"Yes."
But this time—
No one appears.
Instead, every streetlight around them turns off at once.
Darkness.
Only the moon lighting the road.
A voice echoes from somewhere unseen.
"Anomaly behavior confirmed."
Aira looks around nervously.
"Okay I officially hate space."
Nova scans the darkness.
"There are multiple units."
Three figures slowly step out from the shadows.
They look human.
But their movements are too perfect.
Too synchronized.
One of them speaks.
"Return order repeated."
Nova steps forward.
"I refuse."
The three figures tilt their heads at the same time.
Then—
They attack.
This time the fight is faster.
More aggressive.
Nova blocks one strike but another unit hits him from behind.
He falls hard onto the street.
Aira runs toward him.
"NOVA!"
One of the units grabs her arm.
Nova's eyes suddenly flash.
For a moment—
Everything stops.
Not fully.
But slowed.
Nova stands again, breathing heavily.
His power is unstable.
The street cracks beneath his feet.
He pushes the unit away from Aira.
"Run."
But Aira shakes her head.
"No."
Nova looks at her.
"You cannot fight them."
She smirks slightly.
"Maybe not."
"But I can still stand here."
For a moment the alien units hesitate.
Analyzing.
Then one of them speaks calmly.
"Human attachment confirmed."
"New variable detected."
They suddenly stop attacking.
All three step backward.
Their eyes glow faintly.
"Report sent."
"Hunter deployment approved."
The units disappear into the darkness as silently as they arrived.
---
Later that night on the rooftop—
Nova sits quietly.
Aira watches him.
"You're worried."
Nova answers honestly.
"Yes."
"Why?"
Nova looks up at the sky.
"Because scouts and observers are expendable."
Aira crosses her arms.
"So what's next?"
Nova's voice becomes quieter.
"They will send a hunter."
Aira sighs.
"Of course they will."
Nova turns to her.
"A hunter does not observe."
"It eliminates."
For the first time since arriving on Earth—
Nova looks afraid.
Above them, hidden in orbit, a massive chamber inside the alien vessel opens.
A new figure steps forward.
Larger.
Stronger.
More dangerous.
A single message appears on the command screen:
HUNTER UNIT DEPLOYING.
TARGET: NOVA.
And Earth's quiet town…
is about to become a battlefield.
