Chapter 72 - Chapter 72: Duel Begins

The battle for the valley reached a fever pitch as the Teatrum Absolutum solidified into a hauntingly beautiful stage of light and ruin.

Air itself seemed to vibrate with the collision of ancient magic and raw, primal ferocity.

The Hydra, sensing the sudden shift in the battlefield's energy, ignored the fleeing remnants of the infantry and focused its hatred entirely on the four figures standing in the center of the golden glow.

With a sound like grinding tectonic plates, all four necks coiled back simultaneously, launching into a synchronized strike that shattered the earth where the heroes stood.

"Grimwatch, hold the center!"

Elyndra commanded, her hands weaving a complex lattice of silver light that tethered the team's defenses together.

Grimwatch didn't flinch.

As the massive jaws crashed into his expanded barrier, the stone-like armor on his body groaned under the pressure, glowing with a blinding, rhythmic light.

The ground beneath his feet cracked, but the Commander held his ground, his blade absorbing the kinetic shock and feeding it back into the magical weave.

"I've got it!"

Grimwatch roared, his voice sounding as if it were echoing from deep within a mountain.

"Keep the focus on the regeneration—don't let it mend!"

Shay, meanwhile, had become a blur of motion and madness.

His illusions swirled around the Hydra's thrashing necks, creating a disorienting spectacle that forced the beast to lash out blindly.

"Too slow! Too ugly! And definitely too boring!"

Shay's voice originated from three different directions at once.

He vaulted off a falling piece of debris, his hand sweeping through the air to summon a cluster of floating, explosive playing cards that detonated against the Hydra's snout.

The beast howled in rage, its acidic bile spraying wildly, but Shay was already gone, reappearing atop a ruined siege engine with a cocky, porcelain-masked grin.

"Alaric! The timing is now!"

Shay shouted, signaling the mages.

Alaric's eyes narrowed behind his glasses as his fancy cane blazed with white-hot energy.

"Synchronizing harmonic frequencies. Elyndra, on my mark—sever and seal!"

The mages' hands moved in perfect harmony. A torrent of focused, crystalline light erupted from their unified position, slicing through the air with surgical precision. The beam intercepted one of the Hydra's necks, severing it with the ease of a master blade through silk.

As the head plummeted, spewing a fountain of black blood, Elyndra chanted a rapid-fire incantation, her voice ringing out above the chaos.

The silver light from their connection lashed out, wrapping around the bleeding stump and cauterizing it with an absolute, magical seal that prevented the Hydra's necrotic flesh from knitting back together.

The beast shrieked—a sound of pure, unadulterated agony that echoed across the kingdom's broken capital.

"One down!"

Grimwatch bellowed, his sword glowing with the stored energy of the Hydra's previous attacks.

"Keep the pressure on! It's losing its footing!"

The Hydra, reeling from the loss of a head, began to glow with a sickly, pulsating violet light.

It wasn't retreating; it was gathering every ounce of its monstrous vitality for a final, desperate explosion of power.

"It's going to overload the area!"

Alaric warned, his voice straining as he struggled to maintain the stability of the stage.

"If we don't end this in the next exchange, the shockwave will wipe out everything within a mile!"

Shay landed beside Grimwatch, his laughter momentarily replaced by a cold, calculating intensity.

"Well, Commander, looks like we're out of time for the rehearsal."

Grimwatch gripped his shield, the veins of light across his armor reaching a fever pitch.

"Then let's give them a show they'll never forget."

The Hydra reared back, its three remaining heads opening wide to unleash a combined torrent of destruction, while the four heroes prepared to unleash the full weight of the

Teatrum Absolutum.

The battlefield shifted instantly.

A mocking giggle drifted through the valley, cutting through the Hydra's furious hissing as a sudden ripple of confusion spread across the nearby soldiers, drawing every eye toward a lone figure casually walking through the destruction.

Shay strolled forward.

A careless confidence settled across his posture as shattered weapons crunched beneath his boots, scattering fragments of steel across the blood-soaked earth while the three Hydra heads tracked his approach with growing hostility.

The monster hesitated.

Violent tension rolled through its scaled necks, tightening its massive muscles as violet energy continued building between its fangs, illuminating the battlefield in flashes of sickly light.

Shay stopped.

A casual amusement spread beneath his porcelain mask as loose strands of confetti drifted around him, fluttering through the battlefield while distant explosions echoed across the ruined valley.

"Yoo..."

His voice carried easily.

Playful curiosity slipped into his tone as he tilted his head upward, studying the towering monster while the Hydra's glowing eyes narrowed toward him.

"Look at those fangs."

The air remained tense.

A heavy pressure lingered across the battlefield as the creature's massive jaws slowly parted, revealing rows of jagged teeth stained by countless kills.

"Never thought I'd see them up close."

Shay leaned slightly forward.

Theatrical fascination settled into his movements as the violet glow reflecting from the Hydra's mouth danced across his porcelain mask.

"A bit yellow, aren't they?"

The battlefield fell silent.

A nervous anticipation swept through the nearby soldiers, tightening their grip on weapons as the Hydra's growls deepened into a threatening rumble that shook loose dust from the surrounding cliffs.

Then Shay reached into his coat.

With a quick movement disturbed the crimson fabric, shifting the long folds around him as his gloved hand disappeared into the darkness beneath his cloak, searching through its hidden contents.

The moment stretched.

A low vibration rolled through the battlefield as the Hydra continued charging its attack, filling the air with growing magical pressure while Shay casually rummaged through his coat as though searching for misplaced keys.

Then he found it.

An bright splash of color emerged from the darkness, catching the morning sunlight as Shay pulled free a perfectly shaped balloon twisted into the form of a snarling wolf.

"See this?"

Mischievous excitement sharpened his voice as he raised the balloon into view, presenting it proudly while the surrounding soldiers stared in complete disbelief.

"Watch..."

The atmosphere fractured instantly.

A violent surge of magical energy exploded from Shay's hand, rattling loose debris across the battlefield as a sharp screech tore through the air, bending reality around the colorful balloon while streams of chaotic Spite flooded into its surface.

The transformation erupted.

Crushing pressure swept across the valley, shaking the surrounding cliffs as the small balloon expanded violently, growing larger and larger while translucent violet energy hardened into the shape of a colossal wolf towering above the battlefield.

The construct awakened.

A deafening roar ripped through the valley, scattering dust and shattered stone across the earth as the enormous spectral beast lunged forward, crossing the battlefield in a single bound before slamming directly into the Hydra's left neck.

The impact detonated.

A devastating shockwave tore through the battlefield, throwing loose rubble into the air as the massive scaled neck crashed sideways into the jagged cliff face, burying the rock beneath fractures and falling debris.

The Hydra reeled.

A burst of pain surged through the creature as furious hissing echoed across the valley, leaving one of its massive heads pinned against shattered stone beneath the crushing force of the magical wolf.

Shay never looked back.

A feverish excitement spread through his movements as his hand disappeared into his coat once more, already searching for another impossible weapon while fragments of violet energy drifted through the battlefield behind him.

"Party's just getting started, you overgrown salad!"

His laughter erupted.

A manic joy swept through the battlefield as confetti scattered into the air, drifting through smoke and blood while the chaotic mage prepared his next absurd creation beneath the furious gaze of the wounded Hydra.
