Chapter 9 - The Port

Chapter Nine

The Port

Morning arrived with the smell of salt and diesel.

The Moretti port stretched across the coastline like a steel kingdom — cranes towering over cargo ships, containers stacked in endless rows, workers moving in controlled chaos under the watchful eyes of armed security.

Seraphina stepped out of the black sedan beside Alessandro.

Wind tugged at her hair.

This world was different from the polished halls of the estate.

Here, power was louder.

Rougher.

Real.

Men paused as they noticed her.

Dock workers.

Security.

Crew members unloading freight.

The Don arriving was not unusual.

But the Donna arriving beside him—

That was new.

Alessandro adjusted his jacket and glanced down at her briefly.

"Stay near me."

"I intend to."

His hand hovered near her back as they walked forward, guards falling into formation behind them.

Two captains were already waiting near the loading cranes.

One of them—

Ricci.

Of course.

He greeted Alessandro with an easy smile.

"Don. The shipment arrived early this morning."

His eyes moved to Seraphina.

"Donna."

Polite.

Careful.

Watching.

Seraphina returned the greeting with a small nod.

"Captain."

Alessandro gestured toward the rows of cargo containers.

"Walk with me."

The group began moving through the port.

Ricci spoke smoothly about shipment routes, customs contacts, and distribution schedules.

To anyone listening, it sounded like routine business.

But Seraphina noticed something.

Every few minutes—

Ricci checked his watch.

Not nervously.

Expectantly.

She filed the observation away.

They stopped near a stack of sealed containers marked for export.

Alessandro turned to the foreman.

"Open this one."

The foreman signaled two workers, who pried the heavy container doors open.

Inside were crates stamped with electronic shipping labels.

Ricci smiled slightly.

"Clean shipment," he said.

But Alessandro didn't respond.

Instead, he looked at Seraphina.

"Donna."

The single word carried meaning.

He was inviting her observation.

Testing her.

The captains noticed too.

She stepped closer to the crate.

The workers opened one.

Inside were rows of high-end electronics — phones, processors, luxury components.

Perfectly legal cargo.

On the surface.

Seraphina reached down, lifting one of the boxed processors.

She studied the label.

Then the serial code.

Then the shipping barcode.

Something didn't match.

She looked at Alessandro.

"These serial numbers belong to a shipment that cleared customs three weeks ago."

Silence fell around the container.

Ricci's smile faded slightly.

"That's impossible," he said lightly.

Seraphina replaced the box carefully.

"Unless the originals were swapped."

Alessandro's gaze turned to Ricci.

Cold.

"You inspected this shipment personally."

Ricci shrugged faintly.

"Sometimes suppliers make errors."

"Three hundred crates of errors?" Alessandro asked.

The dock workers had gone still.

Even the wind seemed quieter.

Seraphina stepped back slightly, allowing Alessandro to take control of the moment.

Ricci's calm began to thin.

"This port handles thousands of shipments, Don."

"And yet," Alessandro said slowly, "this particular one is fraudulent."

He turned to his security chief.

"Seal the container."

Ricci spoke quickly.

"This is unnecessary."

Alessandro's eyes snapped back to him.

"Is it?"

The temperature in the air dropped.

Ricci's jaw tightened.

"If the shipment is compromised, we'll trace it."

"We will," Alessandro said calmly.

Then his voice hardened.

"Internally."

Two guards stepped forward.

Not grabbing Ricci.

Just standing closer.

A warning.

Ricci looked between them and forced a small laugh.

"You think I'm responsible?"

"I think," Alessandro said quietly, "that someone in my house believes I won't notice theft."

His eyes flicked briefly toward Seraphina.

"And now I have two sets of eyes."

Ricci's gaze shifted to her.

Not polite anymore.

Not curious.

Hostile.

Good, she thought.

Now he sees me.

Alessandro turned away from him.

"Continue the inspection."

The group moved further down the port, leaving the container under guard.

Seraphina walked beside Alessandro in silence for several moments.

"You pushed him," she murmured.

"He pushed first."

"You didn't accuse him."

"Not yet."

The wind carried the distant sound of ship horns across the water.

Ricci was still behind them.

Walking.

Watching.

"Do you know what he's doing?" Seraphina asked quietly.

Alessandro didn't look at her.

"Tell me."

"He's testing how much influence I have."

"And?"

She met his gaze.

"You just answered that question."

A slow understanding crossed his expression.

"Yes," he said.

"I did."

They reached the edge of the dock where waves struck the concrete below.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Alessandro leaned slightly closer to her.

"Ricci will move soon," he said under his breath.

"Why?"

"Because now he knows we are watching him."

Seraphina looked back across the port.

Ricci stood near the container, speaking quietly to one of the guards.

Too calmly.

Too carefully.

"Yes," she said softly.

"He will."

Alessandro's hand rested briefly at the small of her back again.

Not controlling.

Protective.

Strategic.

"You handled yourself well."

"Thank you."

A pause.

Then—

"You enjoy this."

It wasn't a question.

Seraphina watched the waves strike the dock.

"No," she said quietly.

"I just refuse to be powerless."

Alessandro studied her for a moment longer.

Then he looked back toward the port.

The game was accelerating.

And for the first time since marrying her—

He realized something unsettling.

His fragile bride wasn't learning his world.

She was adapting to it faster than anyone expected.

Including him.
