Chapter 7 - Chapter 7: The Ground Beneath His Feet

The construction lights buzzed overhead, casting long, sharp shadows across the unfinished concrete.

Dust drifted slowly through the air where shattered blocks still lay scattered across the ground.

Lucian stood just inside the broken fence, hands resting casually in his hoodie pockets.

Across from him, the massive man who had been throwing punches strong enough to crack the ground stared at him like he had just walked into the middle of a war zone.

Which, Lucian supposed, he technically had.

The injured fighter leaned against a half-collapsed pillar a few yards away, breathing hard as he wiped blood from the corner of his mouth.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Then the large man spoke.

"Kid," he said slowly, "you picked a very bad place to wander into."

Lucian glanced around the construction yard.

Broken concrete.

Bent metal beams.

A crater in the ground where someone had clearly been slammed into the earth.

"Yeah," Lucian said casually. "I noticed that."

The big man cracked his knuckles.

Lucian could practically hear the joints pop.

"Last chance," the man said. "Walk away."

Lucian tilted his head.

"See, I would," he said thoughtfully. "But you guys just threw a chunk of a building into the street."

He pointed behind him.

"That's kind of a public safety issue."

The injured fighter coughed out a short laugh.

The big man didn't look amused.

Lucian sighed quietly.

"Look," he continued, "I'm not here to fight anyone."

He gestured toward the other fighter.

"But maybe stop trying to turn him into pavement?"

The large man's eyes narrowed.

"Not your business."

Lucian shrugged.

"Fair."

He slowly slipped his hands out of his hoodie pockets.

"But unfortunately," he added, "I'm one of those annoying people who helps when things get messy."

The man snorted.

"Then you're an idiot."

He moved.

Fast.

Faster than a normal human should be able to move.

The ground cracked under his feet as he lunged forward, fist pulling back like a wrecking ball.

Lucian's eyes widened.

"Whoa—!"

Instinct moved his body before his brain caught up.

His foot slid back automatically.

The punch flew past his face by inches.

The air pressure alone made his hair whip sideways.

Lucian stumbled backward.

"Okay!"

He threw both hands up.

"That was aggressive!"

The man turned and swung again.

Lucian ducked awkwardly, barely avoiding the second strike.

The punch slammed into a concrete pillar behind him.

The pillar shattered.

Lucian stared.

"…That was a load-bearing column."

The man stepped forward again.

"You talk too much."

Lucian backed up quickly.

"Yeah, that's been a lifelong issue."

His heel suddenly pressed against the ground harder than expected.

The earth beneath him responded instantly.

The warm sensation returned.

The same connection he had felt earlier spread through his feet again.

Lucian blinked.

"Oh."

He glanced down briefly.

"…Right."

The ground.

His connection.

Son of Gaia.

The massive man swung again.

Lucian moved.

But this time, something strange happened.

His body shifted more smoothly.

His foot pressed against the concrete and—

The ground answered.

The earth pushed back.

Lucian slid sideways just fast enough for the punch to miss.

His eyes widened slightly.

"…Okay."

He looked down again.

"That's new."

The system window appeared briefly beside him.

Ability Stabilizing

Son of Gaia — Earth Step

Lucian barely had time to read it before the man charged again.

Lucian sighed.

"Alright."

He planted his foot.

The ground vibrated faintly beneath him.

Then he moved.

This time, it wasn't clumsy.

The earth carried the motion.

Lucian sidestepped with surprising ease.

The attacker's punch hit nothing but air.

Lucian raised a finger.

"Quick feedback."

The man turned.

Lucian smiled slightly.

"You're very strong."

He gestured toward the destroyed pillar.

"Like… property damage strong."

The man growled.

"But," Lucian continued, "your footwork could use some work."

The injured fighter nearby stared at him like he had completely lost his mind.

The big man roared and charged again.

Lucian sighed.

"Alright, lesson two."

This time, Lucian didn't move away.

He stepped forward.

His foot touched the cracked ground.

The earth pulsed.

Lucian swung.

Not hard.

Not even fast.

Just a simple punch.

But the ground beneath him pushed upward at the same moment.

The force traveled through his body like a spring releasing.

His fist connected with the man's chest.

Boom.

The impact echoed across the construction yard.

The massive man flew backward like he had been hit by a truck.

He slammed into a stack of steel beams, sending them crashing to the ground.

Silence followed.

Lucian blinked.

"…Oh."

He stared at his hand.

"…I did not expect that."

The injured fighter stared too.

Wide-eyed.

Lucian slowly looked up again.

The big man groaned as he pushed himself out of the wreckage.

Still conscious.

Lucian sighed.

"Of course."

The man stood again, shaking his head.

"You…"

He wiped blood from his lip.

"…aren't normal."

Lucian shrugged.

"Working on it."

The man glared.

Then suddenly—

He turned and ran.

Lucian blinked.

"…Huh."

The injured fighter let out a relieved breath.

Lucian watched the man disappear over the far fence.

"Well," Lucian muttered, "that ended faster than expected."

The system chimed quietly.

Narrative Event Influenced

Narrative Value +80

Lucian whistled.

"Nice."

Behind him, the injured man slowly stood up straight.

Lucian turned.

"You okay?"

The man studied him carefully.

"You… just knocked him across the yard."

Lucian scratched the back of his neck.

"Yeah, that surprised me too."

The man walked closer, still staring.

"Who are you?"

Lucian thought about that question for a moment.

Then he smiled.

"Just a guy passing through."

The man frowned slightly.

"That man was dangerous."

Lucian glanced toward the fence where the attacker had escaped.

"Yeah," he said.

"I noticed."

The man hesitated.

Then he extended a hand.

"Thank you."

Lucian shook it.

"No problem."

The system chimed again.

Major Narrative Character Interaction Logged

Lucian blinked.

"Oh boy."

He had a feeling this world had more story waiting for him than he originally thought.

Far away, in the quiet shop between worlds—

Elena sat behind the counter, staring at the glowing system screen.

Lucian's Narrative Value number had jumped dramatically.

She tilted her head.

"…What exactly is he doing out there?"

Back in the construction yard, Lucian stretched his arms.

"Well," he muttered.

"First night in another world."

He looked around the ruined site.

"Already punched a superhuman."

He sighed.

"Yeah."

He started walking back toward the street.

"This job is definitely going to be weird."
