Chapter 45 - Chapter 10: One More Guest

The fort glowed softly under crimson-and-gold lights.

Music played low in the background — nothing loud, nothing overwhelming.

Ren sat cross-legged on the floor, sleeves slightly rolled up, still wearing the GrabPack like he refused to take it off yet.

Eighteen.

Eighteen candles melted slowly into the frosting.

Denki was reenacting Ren speed-running the courtyard puzzle.

Kirishima kept saying, "BRO YOU ONE-TAPPED THE PROTOTYPE."

Mina was handing out root beer floats.

Todoroki quietly adjusted one of the LED strips that flickered too aggressively.

Even Bakugou was leaning against the wall instead of leaving.

Kaito sat beside Ren, nudging him with his shoulder.

"You had fun."

Ren smirked faintly.

"…It was acceptable."

"Acceptable?" Denki screeched.

"You literally smiled."

"I did not."

"You did."

Ren took a sip of root beer to hide it.

The room felt safe.

Warm.

Earned.

And then—

The lights flickered.

Just once.

Everyone paused.

Denki blinked.

"…That wasn't me."

A soft metallic clink echoed from the hallway outside the common room.

The heavy steel panel door — the one they used for the "AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL ONLY" reveal — was still half open.

Fog from earlier drifted lazily through the crack.

And from that fog—

A silhouette stepped forward.

Small.

Light.

Balanced on the balls of her feet.

Twin buns.

A tilted head.

Pink eyes reflecting the LED glow.

"…You forgot to invite me."

Silence.

Mina's root beer cup slipped from her hand.

Kirishima froze mid-breath.

Kaito stood up instantly.

Ren didn't move.

"…Toga?"

The girl smiled wider.

Himiko Toga stepped fully into the light like she'd always been part of the set.

She looked around slowly.

At the fort.

At the horror props.

At the red fog.

Her eyes sparkled.

"You made a factory," she said, almost reverently. "For him."

No one spoke.

Aizawa wasn't in the room.

None of the pro heroes were inside right now.

They were still patrolling perimeter.

And somehow—

She had slipped through.

Todoroki's voice was calm but tight.

"How did you get past security?"

Toga giggled.

"Playtime is full of hidden passages."

She stepped closer.

Not rushing.

Not attacking.

Just… walking.

Ren finally stood.

His expression wasn't fear.

It wasn't anger.

It was controlled.

"You shouldn't be here," he said quietly.

Toga tilted her head.

"But it's your birthday."

She clasped her hands behind her back and swayed slightly.

"I brought something."

The room tensed.

Bakugou's palm sparked faintly.

Kirishima hardened instinctively.

Kaito stepped half in front of Ren.

Toga noticed.

Her smile softened.

"I'm not here to ruin it."

That almost made it worse.

She reached into her sleeve slowly.

Everyone braced—

And she pulled out…

A small gift box.

Crimson wrapping paper.

Gold ribbon.

Perfectly matching the theme.

Denki blinked.

"…What."

Toga walked forward until she stood a few feet from Ren.

Close enough to feel personal.

Far enough to not touch.

She held the box out.

"You're eighteen now," she said softly. "That's important."

Ren didn't take it.

"…How do you know that?"

Toga's eyes flicked briefly toward the ceiling.

Then back to him.

"I pay attention."

Aizawa's voice suddenly echoed from the hallway.

"Step away from him."

Red capture scarf snapped forward, wrapping around Toga's wrists before she even reacted.

Shota Aizawa stepped into the doorway, eyes sharp and fully awake now.

Midnight appeared behind him.

Mount Lady's shadow crossed the outer wall.

Toga didn't struggle.

She just laughed softly.

"I said I wasn't fighting."

Aizawa tightened the scarf slightly.

"You breached secured grounds."

She shrugged lightly.

"You left a fog curtain."

Denki whispered, "Oh my gosh she used our aesthetic against us—"

Toga's eyes never left Ren.

"You liked it, didn't you?" she asked him quietly.

The factory.

The puzzles.

The chase.

Ren held her gaze.

"…Yeah."

The honesty startled everyone.

Toga smiled wider.

"I knew you would."

Aizawa began pulling her toward the hallway.

"That's enough."

Toga finally looked at him.

"You can check the box," she said sweetly. "It's safe."

Then she looked back at Ren one last time.

"Happy birthday."

And just like that—

She twisted sharply, slipped from one loosened loop of scarf (she had planned for that), kicked off the wall—

And vanished into the fog-filled corridor.

Aizawa bolted after her.

Midnight close behind.

Mount Lady's voice echoed from outside.

"Visual on rooftop!"

A blast of flame lit the sky briefly — Endeavor intercepting somewhere beyond the courtyard.

Then—

Silence.

The common room stood frozen.

The gift box still resting in Ren's hand.

He hadn't realized he'd taken it.

Kaito stared at it.

"…Don't open that."

Bakugou agreed immediately.

"Yeah. No."

Ren looked down at it.

Then back toward the hallway where she'd disappeared.

"She could've attacked," he said quietly.

No one answered.

He carefully set the box on the table.

Untied the ribbon slowly.

Lifted the lid.

Inside—

A simple photograph.

From earlier that night.

Ren in the red fog.

Fire lighting his palm.

Grinning.

On the back, written in neat handwriting:

"You look alive when you're playing."

Silence.

Denki swallowed.

"…That's creepy."

Todoroki nodded.

"But accurate."

Kaito's jaw tightened.

"She was watching."

Ren stared at the photo a moment longer.

Then exhaled.

"…She didn't come to ruin it."

He set the photo down beside the cake.

The candles had burned down completely now.

Aizawa returned minutes later.

"She's gone."

Simple.

Final.

But his eyes lingered on the gift.

On Ren.

On the number eighteen.

And somewhere far beyond U.A.'s walls—

A different observer marked:

Phase Two underway.
