Mystery D had twenty-two entries.
He had opened it on the day of his outer sect enrollment.
Wei Shan had answered a question about the halls' formation stone calibration behavior in a way that showed he understood five-path cultivation structures.
This understanding wasn't like someone who had just read five-path structures. It was like someone who had actually worked with them.
The answer was brief, accurate,e and precisely calibrated to the question asked.
He had written it in the compound notebook that evening. Opened Mystery D.
Nine days in the outer sect.
The first mystery opened alongside the Foundation file entry.
The twenty-two entries that followed across four years described a pattern that became clearer with each entry.
Wei Shan had been in the Blackspire compound for nine years. Some months before Rens enrollment.
His cultivation stage as readable through the monitoring of the compounds standard formation environment was consistent with Body Tempering Layer Three.
His compound role was standard: cultivation research access user, hall regular formation maintenance role auxiliary observer without an active assignment.
He drew his compound allocation. Asked for nothing unusual.
What made Wei Shan different from long-term compound fixtures was his knowledge and attention.
He had notes from a five-path cultivator with his own comments. Corrections to the failed cultivator's interference mapping calculations, observations about where the cultivator had misread their cessation state data, and specific comments on what the cultivator could have done differently.
These comments showed someone who had understood the five-path failure mode from the inside not from reading about it.
He had information about the Hollow's inner layer formation lock. The five-path output requirement. That wasn't in the accessible outer sect library records.
He had been reading cultivation texts that were on the border between outer sect holdings and specialist material that his compound rank technically permitted but that standard outer sect cultivators at his apparent stage didn't typically pursue.
The covered text he had been reading for three weeks was in this category.
The attention: across four and a half years of shared secondary hall sessions Wei Shan had been reading the stream at a precision that casual monitoring at Body Tempering Layer Three ambient range shouldn't have been able to produce.
He had registered cultivation developments in Rens structure that ambient observation at his stage shouldn't have been able to detect.
He had never commented on any of these observations.
He had made them anyway.
Twenty-two entries.
The pattern: Wei Shan wasn't Body Tempering Layer Three.
His cultivation stage was suppressed.
The suppression was more sophisticated than the boring layer Ren had been maintaining. Sophisticated enough that four and a half years of systematic ambient monitoring hadn't been able to determine its depth or mechanism with confidence.
Mystery D had a question that had been in the file since the fourteenth entry.
The question wasn't about Wei Shan's cultivation stage though that was Mystery D's primary focus.
It was nine years.
Wei Shan had been in the Blackspire compound for nine years before Rens' enrollment.
The Blackspire compound was a sect compound of no particular distinction. Standard resource allocation, standard formation maintenance infrastructure, standard cultivator roster.
There was no reason, from the compounds' visible profile for a cultivator of whatever Wei Shans actual stage was to be stationed here for nine-plus years.
Unless the reason wasn't the compound's profile but something specific about the compound.
The eleventh stone.
The monitoring account.
The five-hundred-year enrollment record with its history.
All of them are specific to the Blackspire compound. All of them are connected, however obliquely to the presence of a Five-Root cultivator in the compound.
Wei Shan had arrived in the compound nine years before Rens' enrollment.
He had been here before the drift began.
He had known what the stone was and what the calibration meant.
He had been reading the compounds monitoring for nine years with a precision appropriate to someone who understood what was being monitored.
The supplementary question: had Wei Shan been in the compound specifically to be here when the Five-Root cultivator arrived?
Was his nine-year presence the product of an assignmentrather than a standard compound posting?
The question had been in the file since the entry.
The inner sect archive would have what the sect's accessible holdings didn't.
Ten days before the Hollow Wei Shan spoke first.
Ren was running the morning maintenance session in the corner.
Wei Shan was in his position reading the covered text.
Standard secondary hall morning: two people, their work, the ambient stream running at its established patterns.
The session was at its ninety-minute mark.
Wei Shan set the text down.
He looked at Ren for a moment with a reading look. The look was processing something rather than simply regarding it.
Then: "The stones drift.
The rate is logarithmic."
Ren completed the measurement before responding.
"Yes."
"Based on the model and the sixth cessation tests deep read of the completion window is approximately five to eleven months from today."
He had calculated the range.
"Yes."
Wei Shan looked at the stone rather than at Ren.
"The stone was placed in this corner forty-three years ago.
Not by chance.
By a formation master with a reason and a specific design intent.
The formation masters' records document the reason and the intent precisely."
Ren set down the -session notebook.
"The records are not in the compound library or in the sects' accessible holdings " Wei Shan continued.
"They are in the sect's restricted cultivation archive.
Second level.
You will have access after Foundation Establishment with the inner sect access rights that follow.
The records will explain what the formation master was building, why this compound,d and what the completed calibration is designed to produce."
He said this as a statement of confirmed fact.
"You have seen those records " Ren said.
"Yes."
"Then you already know what the completed calibration produces."
"Yes."
Wei Shan looked at the stone.
"The stones function on completion is to provide a calibration anchor for the Foundation's synchronization stabilization phase.
Not a replacement for the Fivefold Confluence Root. An anchor.
The root provides the five-path integration reference.
The stone provides the secondary synchronization stability anchor.
The two anchors together produce a stable synchronization environment through the attempts accommodation phase that neither anchor alone could produce.
The formation master designed the stone configuration for this purpose. To exist in the compounds cultivation environment to calibrate to the arriving Five-Root cultivators synchronization frequency and to be ready as an anchor when the cultivator reaches the Foundation attempt stage."
He was still for a moment.
The eleventh stone had been designed as a component of the Foundation attempt.
Placed forty-three years ago waiting, calibrating for four and a half years and its function was to assist the attempt he was ten days from the beginning of.
"The formation master anticipated this preparation " he said.
"The formation master designed the configuration for a Five-Root cultivator's use " Wei Shan said.
"The calibration begins when a Five-Root cultivator begins sustained cultivation work in the corners formation environment.
It completes when the cultivators preparation has developed to the level appropriate for a Foundation attempt.
The formation master's specification estimated six months for the calibration from the beginning of work.
Your preparation has been more thorough than the formation master's assumption. Your synchronization frequency has developed to a higher value than the assumed baseline, which has extended the calibration's final stages.
Four and a half years rather than six months because the frequency target has been higher."
"The thoroughness of the preparation extended the calibration."
"Yes.
The stone has been tracking your frequency rather than an assumed baseline.
The completion will arrive at the point. When you are ready for it not before."
He thought about this.
The stone's completion aligned with the attempt window because the preparation had been more thorough than the formation master had assumed.
The thoroughness was what made the timing correct.
"Mystery D " he said finally.
Twenty-two entries.
Wei Shan looked at him.
A long moment that had been accumulating across four years.
"I know."
"You have known for four years that I was maintaining a mystery file on you."
"The ambient read at depth is not one-directional."
He said it simply as a fact about how ambient reads at depth worked, without defensiveness.
"You developed the capacity to read my cultivation state from below your apparent stage.
I was reading yours from, above mine.
We have been observing each other across four years without either of us acknowledging it."
Ren processed this.
"Your actual cultivation stage."
"Is not something I will name in this room."
A considered decision, not evasion.
"The Blackspire compounds formation environment includes record-keeping mechanisms I have been managing for nine years.
Naming a stage creates a different type of datum than ambient behavior reads.
The inner sect archive will give you what you are looking for in Mystery D.
More than you are currently looking for."
He would not get an answer in this room. He accepted this. Mystery Ds twenty-two entries already established a bound on Wei Shans actual stage and the lower bound was already significant.
"The stone will be complete while I am in the Hollow " he said.
"The fourteen days inside are within the bounds of when it will be complete. When you get back the stone will be fully calibrated. Both anchors will be ready to try." Wei Shan picked up the covered book. "Go to the Hollow. Get the root. Come back. Try to build the Foundation." He looked at the book. "The formation master's name is Kael Vorin. The records are in the sect archives second level under that name."
He went back to reading.
Ren looked at the stone for a while. Kael Vorin. Forty-three years of waiting had a name. He thought about that. Four decades of the stone sitting in the corner through people who had checked its stability without knowing its purpose waiting for someone specific.
He updated both mystery files. Mystery A now had a name and a known archive location. Mystery D had some information that changed its shape without resolving it. WeiShan'ss knowledge of Mystery A, his nine years in the compound before Ren arrived the dark-covered book, and the monitoring he had been doing for four years. The question about the nine years now had an answer: assignment, not coincidence. He wrote this in the file as something that was likely true but not confirmed. Confirmation would have to wait.
He put the notebook in his bag. Went to do the afternoon's formation maintenance tasks.
Ten days.
The covered book that Wei Shan had been reading for three weeks had appeared in the secondary halls formation study section without anyone recording how it got there.
He had noticed this in the week of Wei Shan's rotation with the book. The library's records logged each book's entry into the holdings its location and its check-out history. The covered books record: a single entry, created two days before Wei Shan first used it source listed as internal transfer from restricted holdings. No transfer documentation attached. No originating holding specified.
He tried to trace the transfer's origin through the restricted holdings transfer documentation. The transfer documentation for the two-day window contained no entry corresponding to the dark-covered books record.. The transfer had been processed outside the standard documentation system or the documentation had been removed from the accessible record after the fact.
He added the covered book as a sub-entry in the Mystery Ds file. The entry documented the acquisition anomaly and the book's characteristics. Slim dark cover, no visible title on the spine handling consistent with a book read many times in the past three weeks. And the observation that Wei Shan read it with the specific attention he gave to books he had been looking for.
He sat in the corner after Wei Shan's disclosure on the tenth day before the Hollow and looked at the secondary hall.
The secondary hall had been the site of the preparations cultivation work for four and a half years. The morning maintenance sessions the post-session notebook updates, the Mystery A drift measurements, the observation work for all five mystery files, and the cessation test sessions themselves. All of it had happened in this room most of it in this corner.
The room was empty. Wei Shan had departed at his hour. The formation stones absorbed in their positions. The hall's ambient signature was the one he had been reading every morning for four and a half years. The eleven-stone arrangements' characteristic pattern, the room's own ambient resonance, and the faint through-wall signature of the compound's outer formation grid. He had learned to read all of it without attention. The reading had become more background than foreground.
He thought about the forty-three years. What it implied about the institution that had designed and placed the stone. Kael Vorin had placed it with confidence to act on it over a forty-three-year timeline. Possibly longer. What kind of institution planned in forty-three year windows? What kind of institution placed stones in compound corners? Assigned cultivators to wait for arrivals that might be decades away? He wrote this question in the general observations section. Added it to the post-Foundation investigation list below the Mystery A entry.
The sect archives the second level under Kael Vorin's name. He had been building toward that archive for three years without knowing its location. He knew it now. Ten days.
Mystery D had a question that had been in the file since the fourteenth entry: the nine years.
Wei Shan had been in the Blackspire compound for nine years before Ren enrolled. The Blackspire compound was a sect compound of no particular distinction. Standard resource allocation, standard formation maintenance infrastructure, standard cultivator roster. There was no reason, from the compounds' visible profile for a cultivator of whatever Wei Shan's actual stage was to be stationed here for nine-plus years. Unless the reason was not the compound's profile but something specific about it.
The eleventh stone. The monitoring account. The five-hundred-year enrollment record with its history. All of them are specific to the Blackspire compound. All of them are connected, however obliquely to the presence of a Five-Root cultivator in the compound. Wei Shan had arrived in the compound nine years before Ren enrolled. He had been here before the drift began. He had known what the stone was and what the calibration meant from the beginning of Rens's presence in the corner. The supplementary question had been in the file since the entry: had Wei Shan been in the compound specifically to be here when the Five-Root cultivator arrived?
The disclosure on the day before the Hollow had not answered this question directly. Wei Shan had declined to name his cultivation stage in a room and had deferred the full account to the inner sect archive. But the pattern of his disclosures. Each one timed to when the preparation had reached the stage at which the disclosure was necessary. Suggested a presence in the compound that had been organized around the preparation and development rather than around the compound's administrative needs. The answer, to the question was probably yes. He wrote it in the file as something that was likely true pending archive confirmation.
