She came back four days later.
Not to the hall. She found him at the hall eating at the middle table.
She sat down across from him without asking.
He noted her choice.
The window seat at the back was her spot.
Coming to the table meant she wanted to talk.
"Can the assessment record be corrected " she said.
He thought about it.
There was a process for that.
He had read about it during his year.
A formal petition was needed, with three supporting observations from cultivators who could sense cultivation.
The petition had to go to Elder Sous office for approval.
He had not told her about this process.
She had found out.
'She went to the library and looked it up' he thought.
'Of course she did.'
"Yes " he said.
"The petition needs three supporting observations."
"You are one " she said.
"Who are the two?"
She got straight to the point.
No small talk.
"I have two people in mind " he said.
"I will ask them."
There was a pause.
Something in her expression seemed like a question.
"Why " she said.
He thought about it.
The honest answer was that a correct classification helped her develop faster.
A faster Lirien was more useful to him.
That was not the whole truth.
"Because the record is wrong " he said.
"Wrong records are inefficient."
She looked at him for a time.
" right " she said.
She went back to her window seat.

Shen Yue agreed quickly.
"Three-Root Wood-Water-Dark with Poison Constitution " Ren said.
"I need a Soul Path observation for the petition."
"When " she asked.
"This week."
"Done."
Darius handled the paperwork.
He was good with forms.
He had watched merchant house contracts get approved.
He knew what Elder Sous assistant looked for.
He used the words.
He made sure the classification glossary matched.
That cut the processing time in half.
Three days later the petition was approved.
Liriens official record was updated.
She was now classified as Three-Root Wood-Water-Dark with a Poison Constitution.
She was a Rare Talent.
She came to the hall the next morning.
She stood in the doorway.
She looked at Ren in the corner.
She said nothing.
He said nothing.
She left.
'That was her way of saying thank you' he thought.
He accepted it and went back to work.
— ◆ —
Shen Yue came by three days later.
She had a look on her face that meant something had changed.
"The record correction was noticed " she said.
Ren looked at her.
"year inner sect disciple Feng Ran " she said.
"He tracks classification correction petitions.
Specifically petitions that reclassify cultivators who were previously recorded as contaminated, defective or low-potential."
"How many of those go through per year " Ren asked.
"Two or three " Shen Yue said.
"Most contaminated-base cultivators do not have people to file on their behalf.
Liriens petition was filed within five months of her arrival.
That is unusual."
"What does Feng Ran do with the petitions he tracks " Ren asked.
"Unknown far " Shen Yue said.
"My contact has the access log.
He pulled Liriens record and the correction filing.
No downstream action visible yet."
Ren thought about it.
A year inner sect disciple tracking contaminated-base correction petitions.
That could be intelligence gathering or the start of a project.
Either way it was information without context to act on.
"File him " Ren said.
"Watch for downstream."
"Already doing it " Shen Yue said.
She left.
He added Feng Ran to his notebook.
Inner sect. Flagged interests.
Tracking misclassified cultivator records.
Reason unknown.
Monitor.
He decided not to alert Lirien
There was not information.
Alerting her now would just cause anxiety.
He closed the notebook.
He sat for a moment. Thought about what he had built.
A record correction.
Administrative.
Legitimate.
Three observations, forms, Elder Sous signature, everything above board.
The kind of process that left no footprint except the one it was supposed to leave.
Someone in the inner sect had noticed within three days.
'The compound is more watched than it appears' he thought.
'Even the administrative layer has eyes on it.'
He filed this.
Then went back to work.

The Bloodline Path specification arrived during a session that same week.
He had been working toward the question for months.
The Bloodline Paths Foundation requirement was the last of the five he could not fully articulate.
It operated on cycles than the other four.
Its integration into the natural synchronization state was harder to read through cessation tests because the bloodline substrate moved at a different pace.
He had refined the question across seventeen query sessions.
Each time an answer arrived it revealed a gap in his framing.
He adjusted.
Queried again.
On the query the full specification came.
He sat with it for a time.
The Bloodline Paths Foundation requirement was a resonance state.
Specifically the bloodline substrate had to be in resonance with all four other paths foundations at the moment of the attempt.
Not passive resonance.
Not structural adjacency.
Active resonance. The bloodline output feeding each of the four simultaneously recognized by each incorporated into each.
This was different from the Soul Paths contact requirement.
The Soul Path needed to read the four.
The Bloodline Path needed to be feeding the four.
At the moment.
'This is the condition to make invisible' he realized.
'An active bloodline resonance state feeding four paths simultaneously produces a cultivation output signature that does not match Body Tempering Layer Two.'
He sat with this problem.
The layers entire function was to match his external output signature to the recorded assessment result.
Body Tempering Layer Two meant Qi output characteristics, specific cultivation pressure, specific ambient signature.
He had been maintaining this profile for three and a half years.
Building four-path bloodline resonance at full output would change that profile noticeably to anyone with cultivation perception.
He could not afford noticeably.
He queried the AES.
The question was precise:
Does suppressed resonance. Built and maintained at fractional output. Satisfy the bloodline Foundation requirement given that the connection is structurally genuine even if the output is deliberately below detection threshold?
The answer arrived.
Yes.
The Foundation formation process read connection, not output magnitude.
A genuine bloodline resonance built at suppressed output was still a bloodline resonance.
The formation would read the connection as it was. Real, functional and able to be brought to expression at the moment of the attempt itself when the boring layer was no longer needed.
'The structure is real' he registered.
'The output level does not affect the reading.'
He updated the Foundation file.
Bloodline Path resonance requirement:
solvable through suppressed construction.
Build at output maintain below detection threshold release to full resonance at the attempt moment.
The structure will be present.
The formation will read the structure.
He closed the file.
Problem solved.
New task added to the work.
He began.

Lirien found him in the hall three days after the correction went through.
She sat down in her corner.
He was between sessions.
He looked at her.
She was quiet for a moment.
"Who is Feng Ran " she said.
Not a question he had expected.
"Where did you hear that name " he asked.
"I have been in this compound for two months " she said.
"I read people.
He has pulled my file twice since the petition was filed.
Once the day the correction went through.
Once three days later."
He looked at her.
"You have access to your file access log " he said.
"Everyone does " she said.
"Most people do not check it."
She paused.
"I check it."
course she did.
"year inner sect disciple " Ren said.
"He tracks classification correction petitions.
We do not know yet why."
"Is he a problem " she asked.
"Potentially " Ren said.
"Currently he is a question without context to answer."
She thought about it.
"What do I do " she asked.
"Nothing " Ren said.
"Do what you have been doing.
Cultivate.
Use the library.
Eat at the window seat.
Develop your alchemy.
Be completely unremarkable."
She looked at him.
The expression she used when evaluating whether an answer was actually correct or just convenient.
"You are telling me to be boring " she said.
"I am telling you to be boring " he said.
There was a pause.
"You have been Body Tempering Layer Two, for four years " she said.
"Yes."
"The permanent fixture " she said.
"Yes."
She looked at him for a moment.
" right " she said.
She left.
He watched the door after she was gone.
She had understood away. Not everything. She didn't know all the details.. The basic idea: the boring layer wasn't just something that happened. It was something you built and kept up on purpose.
She was going to be really good at this.
He added to her notebook entry:
* She checked her file access log.
* She knew about Feng Ran before I told Shen Yue.
* She is running her information management system without coordinating with me.
He paused. Then added:
* This is behavior.
* We should be running our systems that happen to work together. Not coordinated systems.
He closed the notebook.
Went back to his session.

The AES sent him a note during the late session that Friday.
He hadn't asked for it. It arrived on its own. Like the second line had arrived in Chapter 17 during that evening when the Qi frequency from the northeastern section had passed through the compound.
He registered the arrival. He waited.
The note was brief. It was about the Bloodline Path active resonance construction. Specifically: the suppressed construction he was building was structurally sound.. The release sequence from suppressed output to full expression at the moment of the Foundation attempt required a specific trigger mechanism. The resonance wouldn't release automatically when the attempt conditions were met. He would need to initiate the release on purpose and at the time as the attempt.
Simultaneous initiation: Bloodline resonance release and Foundation attempt at the time.
He sat with this.
This was a coordination requirement he hadn't known about. Not hard. The cessation test protocol already gave him practice with deliberate state transitions. The to-maintained synchronization transition he had practiced six times across the cessation tests was structurally similar.
It added a precision demand to the attempt moment that he needed to build into his preparation.
He asked the AES for the timing parameters.
The answer came: the Bloodline resonance release had to complete within three breath cycles of the Foundation attempt initiation. Early and the resonance output wouldn't align with the formations reading process. Late and the Foundation formation would complete without the Bloodline Path input.
Three breath cycles.
He added this to the Foundation file.
* New coordination requirement: Bloodline resonance release and Foundation attempt initiation.
* Timing window: three breath cycles.
* Practice required.
He looked at the entry.
This was the kind of requirement that the external preparation standard would never have produced. The external standard didn't know this requirement existed. The standard texts on Foundation preparation didn't mention Bloodline resonance release timing.
He was the cultivator working with this specific problem.
He added one note:
* The AES delivered this on its own.
* Previous unprompted delivery. Line, Chapter 17 northeastern section frequency event.
* Pattern: AES delivers information when Ren is approaching a gap in his preparation without realizing it. Not when he asks. When the gap is becoming critical.
He looked at this entry for a time.
Then he filed it under Mystery E and went back to work.

Darius had one observation before the week closed.
He found Ren at the hall on Sunday morning.
"The compound is talking about Lirien Kael " he said.
Ren looked at him.
"The record correction changed her classification from base to Rare Talent " Darius said. "People noticed. The classification update is record. Anyone with compound access can see it. Three disciples have approached her since the update to express interest in alliance."
"What did she do " Ren said.
"Declined all three. Politely. Without any ambiguity."
Ren noted this.
"She has been alone in this compound for two months by choice " Darius said. "She is not going to stop being alone because three people suddenly see value in her now that the record says Rare Talent. She knows what changed their interest."
"Yes " Ren said.
"You changed her record " Darius said. "You did not change their character."
"No " Ren said.
Darius turned the quartz. Thinking about something.
"She trusts your assessment of what she has more than she trusts their interest in what she might become " he said. "That is a kind of trust. It requires someone to have seen you correctly first."
He put the quartz away.
"I am not saying this to produce an observation " Darius said. "I am saying it because I think you should know how she is reading the situation. So you have information."
"Thank you " Ren said.
Darius nodded. He left for the merchant hall.
Ren finished his meal.
He thought about what Darius had said. She trusts your assessment of what she has. He had given her a reading and nothing else. No warmth in the delivery. No encouragement. Just accuracy.
That was what had been effective. Because she had never been seen accurately before. The accuracy itself was the thing.
He went back, to his session.
