He ate a full meal.
Rice, two side dishes, braised greens, water. He sat at the middle table in the communal hall at the normal time and ate at the normal pace. He did not eat quickly because the attempt was waiting. He did not eat slowly because he was nervous about the attempt. He ate at the pace appropriate for a morning meal. The boring layer did not change in response to circumstances, and a person whose habits shifted when something important was happening was a person whose habits revealed when something important was happening.
He finished eating. Left at the normal time. Walked to the secondary hall at the normal pace. Passed two disciples in the corridor who nodded and he nodded back and nobody thought about it afterward.
He set his mat down in the northeast corner. He looked at the formation stone arrangement — the ten he had placed, the eleventh he had not. They absorbed quietly in the early morning light. The hall was empty. The two-hour window before the first training period. He had timed this.
He sat.
Hands on his knees.
Eyes closed.
He began.
— ◆ —
Body Path skeleton first.
He had done this one hundred and seven times. The motion was precise and refined past the point of requiring deliberate thought — not unconscious, but not labored. Two years of correct repetition had made the correct execution the only execution available to him when he ran this procedure. The skeleton established along the Heaven Gate's channel path cleanly.
Energy Path integration second. Five-path simultaneous pressure in the correct sequence — the sequence the AES had provided when the Structural tier showed him that wrong sequences produced channel collapse. He had applied it one hundred and seven times since finding it.
He was two-thirds through the Energy Path integration when the difference arrived.
Not resistance. Not an obstacle. A quality. Something produced by the Heaven Gate's specific position in the architecture — last channel, circuit-completing, the meridian whose opening would connect the structure's end back to its beginning. The weight of something that understood, at whatever level structures understand things, what it was in the process of becoming.
He noted it, filed it, continued.
The weight built through the Law Path stage until it was present in all five streams simultaneously — not obstructing the work, just there. Heavy in the specific way of something significant. He kept his breathing even.
Soul Path integration. Most delicate stage. Last in the sequence because the Soul Path calibrated against the completed state of the other four. It settled into place with the precision that seven weeks of reinforcement had made possible — three supporting meridians at optimal, connection geometry clean, every structural condition he had specified present and confirmed.
Bloodline Path final. Brief. The resonance established quickly when the other four were already in place.
He held the full structure.
He waited.
The weight in the space around the Heaven Gate's channel became something he had no prior reference for. Not larger, not more intense. More present. As if it had been waiting for him to finish the approach and was now simply letting him know it was there.

The Heaven Gate closed at the forty-third minute.
No sound. No light. No surge or flash or wave. It closed the way a circuit closes when the final connection is made — quietly, definitively, and everything on the other side of the completion was categorically different from everything before it.
The five streams completed the circuit.
For exactly four seconds they ran as one.
He had been calling the approximation of this the thing that happens when five streams become one motion for two years because he had no better name for it. The approximation was real — he had experienced it hundreds of times, the quality that arrived when the five streams moved well and the gaps between them became very tight, when the paths almost seemed to be one thing moving in five directions at once. He had known it was an approximation. He had not known what it was approximating.
He knew now.
The four seconds were not the approximation finally becoming real. They were the original. The approximation across two years had been the shadow of this — visible in certain conditions because it was cast by something that had always been there, that the structure had always been working toward. The approximation was accurate as approximations go. The original was categorically different from the accuracy of the approximation.
Five paths. One root at the origin receiving the full input for the first time. The circuit complete. The second line of the AES — the five paths feeding a single root at the origin — was not a description of a future state. It was a description of what had been happening since the beginning, at a depth below what his prior perception could access, now made directly perceptible because the circuit was closed and the root was receiving what it had been waiting to receive.
For four seconds he understood what he had built with a clarity that the four seconds themselves were not long enough to fully process.
Then the four seconds ended.
The streams separated back to their individual paths. The circuit remained. The root remained receiving. The Heaven Gate was open and the loop was complete. But the four-second quality of direct perception was gone.
What the four seconds had done to the structure was not gone.
Three candles on the eastern shelf extinguished without wind.
The secondary hall was very quiet.
Ren sat in the dark for a long time.
— ◆ —
Long enough for the light to shift from early morning to mid-morning.
Long enough for the first training period disciples to arrive, notice the dark corner and the dark candles and the stillness of someone who had gone somewhere and was only partway back, and quietly redirect their mats to the other side of the hall without asking questions.
He registered them through the Soul Path stream's ambient reading and did not process them as requiring attention.
He was sitting with what the four seconds had shown him.
The understanding was not technical. He had the technical understanding before the four seconds — he had known what the circuit completion meant in structural terms, had understood what the Heaven Gate did, had planned for Foundation Establishment for weeks. What the four seconds had produced was something different. Something that did not have a clean technical name.
A confirmation.
The structure had a direction. It had always had a direction. The direction was real and everything he had built was aligned with it. The root at the origin was not a metaphor in the AES's second line. It was a real structural feature that had been receiving the five paths' output since the first time all five streams ran simultaneously, developing below the threshold of his prior perception, now briefly made directly visible because the circuit was finally and completely closed.
He did not know what the root was building. The Convergence Canon was sealed. What it contained was not accessible at this stage and would not be accessible until all five paths reached Spirit Integration simultaneously. That was many stages and many years from here.
He did not need to know yet. He needed to feed the root correctly and consistently and continue developing the five-path structure toward what came next. What came next was Foundation Establishment.
He picked up his water cup. Room temperature. He drank it.
He picked up his notebook. Opened to a fresh page.
Foundation Establishment — Preparation Assessment.
He spent the next hour writing questions. AES internal specifications for Perfect Foundation in a five-path structure. External reference comparison with Elder Maren's pre-consolidation methodology and how it translated to five-path simultaneous conditions. Path balance and output ratio requirements. Bloodline Path resonance state at the moment of attempt. Timeline. Resource preparation. Outer-facing profile management during an attempt that would be invisible to the official record.
He filled three pages. Reorganized twice. Added questions he had not thought of initially.
He closed the notebook.

He told Shen Yue the next morning. One sentence: the Heaven Gate is open.
She was quiet for a moment. "Foundation Establishment."
"Planning phase. Months at minimum. Timeline not determined."
"What do you need."
"Same channels. Same external profile. Nothing changes visibly. Body Tempering Layer Two on the official record."
"Understood," she said. She left.
He told Darius that morning.
Darius was quiet for a moment. Then: "Two years."
"Two years and four months."
"Still officially Body Tempering Layer Two."
"Yes."
"Planning Foundation Establishment."
"Planning phase," Ren said. "Months minimum."
Darius turned the quartz for a long time. He asked the question he did not usually ask: "What did it feel like."
Ren considered this. Darius had been watching the two-year timeline and counting the days. He deserved an honest answer.
"Four seconds," Ren said. "That I do not have a description for. Before them and after them, everything was the same and completely different. That is the most accurate account I can give."
Darius looked at him. "That is the most useless thing you have ever said to me."
"Yes," Ren said. "It is also the most accurate one available."
Darius shook his head slowly and left.
Ren returned to the northeast corner. Formation stones absorbing. Eleventh stone in its slightly different way. Three dark candles on the eastern shelf still unlit. Nobody had relit them. He looked at them for a moment.
Three candles. No wind.
He looked away.
Every meridian open. Two years and four months of outer sect existence. Body Tempering Layer Two on every record that existed. A forgotten outer sect nobody by every measurement the outer sect used.
The boring layer was intact.
He intended to keep it that way for as long as the invisible side of it could be used rather than observed.
He opened the notebook to the Foundation Establishment page.
The questions were waiting.
He got to work.
— ◆ —
That evening he queried the AES about Foundation Establishment preparation.
The Heaven Gate had been open for a day. He had spent the day processing what the four seconds had shown him and writing questions in his notebook. Now he sat in the northeast corner in the late evening with the secondary hall empty and the formation stones absorbing quietly and the three dark candles still unlit on the eastern shelf, and he began to work through the questions.
Not all of them. The first category: AES internal specifications for Perfect Foundation in a five-path simultaneous structure. He had a general answer from the query he had run during the reinforcement period — all five paths at the same stage simultaneously, outputs synchronized, internal ratios matching the first book's specifications at the moment of the attempt. What he needed now was the specific numbers.
He formed a precise question about the output level specifications for the Energy Path at the moment of the Foundation attempt given his current five-path structure, and submitted it during a settled moment in the session.
The answer arrived.
Not a number in the conventional sense — the AES did not communicate in numbers. It communicated in proportional relationships and structural states, which his internal perception translated into a specific sense of what the Energy Path's output needed to feel like at the moment of the attempt relative to what it currently felt like. The translation was imprecise in the way that all translations from direct perception to describable reference were imprecise, but it was precise enough to work with. He could identify the target state as a quality, and he could identify the gap between the target state and his current state, and he could begin to calculate what cultivation work would close the gap.
He asked the same question for the other four paths in sequence.
Each answer arrived in the same form. Each gap between current state and target state was assessable. The gaps were not large — he had been building toward these conditions across the entire Major tier, and the Major tier had been building on the foundation of the Structural tier, which had been building on the Circulation tier. The correct sequence applied consistently from the beginning had moved him toward the Foundation attempt conditions without specifically targeting them, because the correct sequence was the sequence that naturally produced those conditions.
He was closer to ready than he had expected.
Not ready yet. The gaps were real and required work to close. But the work was specific, quantifiable in the perceptual sense, and achievable in the timeframe he had been estimating. Months, not years.
He wrote this in his notebook.
He also wrote: the pre-consolidation problem requires separate analysis. The single-path pre-consolidation methodology from Elder Maren's cohort does not translate directly to five-path conditions. Redesign required. AES query on five-path pre-consolidation approach — form the question precisely before submitting.
He added this to the next session's preparation list and closed the notebook.
The secondary hall was very quiet. The formation stones absorbed. The eleventh stone absorbed in its slightly different way. The dark candles cast no shadows.
He sat for a while longer without moving.
Two years and four months. Every meridian open. The root confirmed receiving. The Foundation preparation work begun. The boring layer intact and functioning and maintained identically to how it had been maintained since his first week in the outer sect.
He was exactly where he was supposed to be.
He rolled up his mat. Went back to Block C. Wrote his evening entry. Went to sleep.
