Chapter 27 - I didn't chase him anymore

The silence after the call didn't leave immediately.

It stayed.

It settled into the room like something heavy and unwanted, pressing against my chest, making it hard to breathe.

No one spoke for a while.

My phone was still in my hand, the screen slowly fading to black, as if even it had given up waiting for him.

Cypher didn't call back.

Not immediately.

Not even minutes later.

And somehow… that hurt more than the unanswered call itself.

Because it confirmed something I had been trying not to believe.

I wasn't his priority anymore.

"Enough."

My father's voice broke through the silence, firm and controlled.

I looked up slowly.

His expression had changed.

The anger was still there—but now it was focused. Directed. No longer just emotion, but intention.

"He will answer," he said. "And if he doesn't, I will go to him myself."

My heart tightened slightly at his words.

A part of me wanted that.

Wanted Cypher to be confronted.

Wanted him to feel even a fraction of what I had been feeling.

But another part of me…

The part that had been breaking quietly over the past few weeks…

Was tired.

"I don't want to force him," I said softly.

Both my parents turned to look at me.

My voice wasn't loud.

But it was steady.

And that alone surprised me.

"If he wanted to be here," I continued, "he would be."

The truth of those words sat heavily in the room.

My father frowned slightly.

"That is not how responsibility works, Jessy," he said.

"I know," I replied. "But I can't beg someone to care."

That was the first time I had said it out loud.

And when I did…

Something shifted inside me.

It wasn't a big change.

Not dramatic.

Not loud.

But it was there.

A small piece of me… letting go.

My mother watched me carefully, her eyes soft but searching.

"Jessy…" she said gently. "You don't have to go through this alone. We will stand with you."

I nodded slowly.

"I know."

And for the first time, I actually meant it.

That night felt different.

Not easier.

But… clearer.

I lay in my old bed, staring at the ceiling, my hand resting lightly on my stomach.

The house was quiet.

Too quiet.

But my mind wasn't racing the way it had been before.

Instead, it moved slowly.

Carefully.

Like it was finally trying to understand everything.

Cypher hadn't called.

Not once.

Not even a message.

And strangely…

I didn't cry.

I expected to.

I thought I would break the moment I was alone.

But I didn't.

Maybe I had already cried enough.

Maybe my heart was too tired to keep hurting the same way.

Or maybe…

I was starting to accept the truth.

I closed my eyes slowly.

And for the first time in days, my thoughts didn't revolve around him.

They shifted.

To me.

To the life growing inside me.

To what came next.

The next morning, I woke up to the sound of soft knocking.

"Jessy?" my mother's voice called gently.

"I'm awake," I replied, sitting up slowly.

She stepped in, holding a tray.

Food.

Simple.

Light.

But the effort behind it made my chest tighten slightly.

"I made something easy for you," she said, placing it beside me. "You need to eat."

I nodded.

"I'll try."

She sat beside me for a moment, studying my face.

"You look different," she said quietly.

I paused.

"Different how?"

She smiled faintly.

"Stronger."

The word lingered in the air.

Stronger.

I wasn't sure if I fully believed it yet.

But hearing it…

Made me want to.

Later that afternoon, my phone buzzed.

My heart reacted before I could stop it.

A quick, sharp beat.

I reached for it slowly.

And there it was.

Cypher.

Calling.

I stared at the screen.

For a long moment…

I didn't move.

Yesterday, I would have picked up immediately.

Without thinking.

Without hesitation.

But today…

Today felt different.

The phone kept ringing.

And instead of panic…

I felt something else.

Control.

I let it ring.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Then—

I picked up.

"Hello?" My voice was calm.

Too calm.

There was a slight pause on the other end.

Like he hadn't expected that.

"Jessy…" his voice came through.

Familiar.

But distant.

"I saw your call yesterday."

I didn't respond immediately.

I just listened.

Waiting.

For something more.

An explanation.

An apology.

Something.

"I've been busy," he added.

Busy.

That word again.

It almost made me laugh.

Almost.

"I see," I said simply.

Another pause.

"You called… is everything okay?" he asked.

For a second…

Just a second…

The old version of me wanted to answer that question honestly.

Wanted to say:

No, everything is not okay.

I'm pregnant.

I've been sick.

I've been alone.

I needed you.

But I didn't.

Instead, I took a slow breath.

"My parents know," I said.

Silence.

Complete silence.

I could almost hear his thoughts racing.

"They… what?" he asked finally.

"They know," I repeated calmly. "About the pregnancy."

Another pause.

Longer this time.

"And?" he asked cautiously.

I looked down at my hand resting on my stomach.

"And now they know about you too."

That one landed.

I felt it.

Even through the phone.

"What do you mean?" his voice tightened slightly.

"They know you're the father," I said.

Silence again.

But this time…

It wasn't just silence.

It was tension.

Real tension.

"I see," he said slowly.

That was it.

No panic.

No urgency.

No emotion.

Just that.

I closed my eyes briefly.

And in that moment…

Something inside me settled completely.

"You don't sound surprised," I said quietly.

"I just… didn't expect it to happen like this," he replied.

I nodded to myself.

Of course.

Not like this.

Not at a time that would inconvenience him.

Not in a way that would force him to step up.

"I understand," I said.

And this time…

I truly did.

There was another pause.

"Are they… angry?" he asked.

I let out a soft breath.

"They're concerned," I said. "And they want to meet you."

That did it.

I felt the shift instantly.

"Meet me?" he repeated.

"Yes."

Another silence.

And this one…

This one told me everything I needed to know.

I didn't rush to fill it.

I didn't beg.

I didn't explain.

I just waited.

Finally—

"I'll think about it," he said.

That was the moment.

The exact moment.

Where something inside me…

Let go.

Not loudly.

Not painfully.

Just… quietly.

Because I finally saw him clearly.

Not the version I had loved.

Not the version I had believed in.

But who he really was.

And for the first time…

I didn't feel the need to chase that version anymore.

"Okay," I said simply.

No emotion.

No pressure.

No expectation.

Just acceptance.

"Jessy—" he started.

But I had already made my decision.

"You can let me know when you've decided," I added calmly.

And before he could say anything else—

I ended the call.

I stared at the phone for a moment.

Waiting.

For regret.

For pain.

For the urge to call him back.

But it didn't come.

Instead…

I felt something new.

Peace.

Not complete.

Not perfect.

But real.

I placed the phone down gently.

Then rested my hand on my stomach again.

And this time…

My touch felt different.

Not fearful.

Not uncertain.

But protective.

Grounded.

Certain.

"I've got you," I whispered softly.

And for the first time since everything began…

I believed it.
