Chapter 17 - Chapter 17 – The Cost of Power

________

Silence lingered in the ruins.

The storm was gone.

Arman had vanished.

But the pressure he left behind still clung to the air like a memory that refused to fade.

Izumi sat on the broken stone, his head lowered, his breath uneven.

His hands trembled slightly.

Not from exhaustion.

From something else.

Something deeper.

"…I lost control."

No one answered immediately.

Mira leaned against a cracked pillar, arms crossed, watching him.

Seraphina stood a short distance away, her expression unreadable.

Dianara stepped closer.

"You didn't completely lose it."

Izumi let out a quiet laugh.

"…I almost froze everyone."

Dianara didn't deny it.

"Almost."

"That matters."

Izumi looked up at her.

"…Not enough."

Lior stood behind them, clutching the fragment.

His voice was small.

"I was scared…"

That made Izumi pause.

"…Yeah."

He looked at his hand again.

A faint layer of frost formed—

Then disappeared.

"I don't even know what that power is."

They moved again after a short rest.

Not far from the battlefield, but enough to regroup.

The deeper ruins loomed ahead.

Darker.

Heavier.

Like something was waiting.

Dianara spoke first.

"That wasn't normal elemental magic."

Seraphina nodded.

"It wasn't even advanced elemental magic."

Her eyes moved toward Izumi.

"It was something closer to a domain-type manifestation."

Izumi frowned.

"…Domain?"

Dianara explained.

"A space influenced directly by your mana."

"Not just controlling elements…"

"…but rewriting the environment itself."

Izumi looked down.

"…That sounds way beyond me."

Mira smirked.

"Yeah, no kidding."

She pushed off the wall and walked closer.

"But you did it anyway."

Izumi stayed silent.

Seraphina continued.

"That kind of power doesn't appear randomly."

"There's a source."

Dianara hesitated.

"…I think we already know it."

Izumi looked at her.

"…The Forbidden Scroll?"

She nodded slowly.

"Yes."

The word itself carried weight.

Even the surrounding ruins felt quieter.

Lior looked down at the fragment in his hand.

"…So it's connected to this?"

Dianara answered carefully.

"The fragments are pieces of the seal."

"But the Scroll itself…"

Her voice lowered.

"…is something else entirely."

Seraphina added—

"A forbidden artifact created to bind something that should never be free."

Izumi clenched his fist.

"…And somehow, I'm using its power?"

No one answered.

But the silence was enough.

They stopped near another broken structure.

This one deeper than before.

The light from the surface barely reached here.

Everything felt dim.

Cold.

Even Mira seemed slightly more alert than usual.

"…I don't like this place."

Izumi looked around.

"…You say that about everywhere."

"Yeah."

She glanced toward the darkness ahead.

"But this one's different."

Dianara nodded.

"She's right."

"The mana here is… distorted."

Seraphina placed a hand on her sword.

"Stay ready."

They entered slowly.

The structure was larger than expected.

Not just ruins—

A facility.

Ancient.

Built with purpose.

Dianara's eyes moved across the walls.

"…This isn't just a control point."

Izumi frowned.

"Then what is it?"

She didn't answer immediately.

Instead—

She walked forward.

Toward the center of the structure.

There—

A massive circular platform stood.

Covered in ancient runes.

But unlike the previous nodes—

These were darker.

More complex.

More dangerous.

Lior stepped back instinctively.

"…I don't like this."

Seraphina's voice hardened.

"Stay behind me."

Dianara stepped onto the platform.

The runes flickered.

Then—

Activated.

The room shifted.

The walls lit up.

Ancient systems awakened.

And suddenly—

A voice echoed.

Not from a person.

Not from outside.

From the structure itself.

"Authorization… required."

Izumi blinked.

"…What?"

Dianara's eyes widened.

"…This is a higher-level system."

Mira raised an eyebrow.

"Meaning?"

Dianara's voice became tense.

"…This place isn't just controlling the seal."

"It's managing it."

Silence fell.

Seraphina stepped forward.

"Explain."

Dianara looked at the platform.

"…This is likely one of the core facilities."

"Something that directly interacts with the sealed entity."

Lior's grip tightened.

"…So this is closer to it?"

Dianara nodded slowly.

"…Yes."

The platform pulsed again.

The voice returned.

"Fragment resonance detected."

All eyes turned to Lior.

The fragment glowed brightly.

"Synchronization required."

Izumi stepped forward.

"…So we do the same thing again?"

Dianara shook her head.

"No."

"This is different."

The platform began forming symbols in the air.

More complex than before.

More unstable.

Seraphina's expression hardened.

"…Then we proceed carefully."

But before they could act—

The ground trembled.

Again.

Stronger than before.

Mira's eyes snapped toward the entrance.

"…We're not alone."

Izumi turned.

"…Already?!"

A presence approached.

Not like Arman.

Not overwhelming.

But—

Sharp.

Precise.

Like a blade in the dark.

Seraphina stepped forward.

"…Another one."

Dianara's voice dropped.

"…No."

"…This one feels different."

The shadows near the entrance shifted.

Distorted.

Then—

A figure stepped out.

Slim.

Elegant.

Surrounded by faint shimmering illusions.

A soft smile on her face.

"Found you."

Her voice was calm.

Almost playful.

But something about it felt wrong.

Very wrong.

Dianara's eyes widened.

"…Velkira Sylth."

Mira's grin slowly returned.

"…Another leader, huh?"

Izumi tightened his grip.

"…Here we go again."

Velkira smiled softly.

"Oh no."

Her eyes gleamed.

"This time…"

The entire room distorted.

Reality itself seemed to bend.

"…you're already inside my domain."

The moment her words settled—

The world changed.

The ruins… vanished.

The cold stone beneath their feet dissolved into darkness.

Then—

A new scene formed.

Izumi blinked.

"…What?"

They were no longer inside the facility.

Instead—

They stood in a vast open field.

Endless.

Silent.

Bright light stretching across the horizon.

Mira frowned.

"…Yeah, I hate this already."

Dianara's voice came sharp—

"Don't trust anything you see."

Seraphina stepped forward, her grip tightening on her blade.

"…An illusion domain."

Velkira's voice echoed from everywhere.

Soft.

Playful.

"And a refined one."

A figure appeared in the distance.

Walking slowly toward them.

Elegant.

Calm.

Velkira.

Her eyes shimmered faintly.

"You handled Arman surprisingly well."

She tilted her head slightly.

"But raw strength…"

Her smile widened.

"…isn't everything."

The First Break

Without warning—

The ground beneath Izumi cracked.

He jumped back—

But there was nothing there.

Just endless space.

He almost lost his balance.

"…This isn't real."

"Correct," Velkira replied.

"But your mind believes it is."

Mira dashed forward instantly.

"Then I'll just cut you."

She disappeared into shadows—

Reappearing directly in front of Velkira.

Her dagger swung—

SLASH.

It passed through.

Like cutting air.

Mira landed behind her.

"…Of course."

Velkira chuckled softly.

"Violence is ineffective here."

Seraphina stepped forward.

Her aura expanding.

Golden light spread outward.

Trying to stabilize the space.

"Break."

But the light distorted.

Twisted.

And vanished.

Velkira smiled.

"Your power is impressive."

"But here…"

She raised a finger.

"…I decide what exists."

Cracks in the Mind

Suddenly—

The environment shifted again.

The bright field vanished.

Replaced by darkness.

Cold.

Heavy.

Izumi looked around.

Then—

His eyes widened.

"…No way…"

He was back.

Back in his old home.

The place before everything changed.

Before the underwater world.

Before the power.

Everything looked normal.

Too normal.

"…This…"

His voice shook slightly.

"…This isn't real."

Velkira's voice echoed softly.

"Are you sure?"

A figure appeared in front of him.

Familiar.

Painfully familiar.

Someone from his past.

Smiling.

Alive.

Izumi froze.

"…No."

Behind him, Dianara's voice called out—

"Izumi! Don't fall for it!"

But it sounded distant.

Fading.

Like it was being pulled away.

Velkira stepped beside him.

"Power comes with a cost."

Her voice softened.

"And you haven't paid it yet."

Izumi clenched his fists.

"…This isn't real."

The figure in front of him spoke.

"You left."

The words hit hard.

"You chose power over everything."

Izumi's breath shook.

"…Stop."

Velkira's smile widened slightly.

"Truth hurts, doesn't it?"

Breaking Free

Elsewhere—

Mira stood alone.

Surrounded by darkness.

Then—

Multiple versions of herself appeared.

Each one smirking.

Each one mocking.

"Not strong enough."

"Too reckless."

"Always playing around."

Mira clicked her tongue.

"…Annoying."

One of the illusions stepped forward.

"You hide it well."

"But you know it."

Mira's eyes narrowed.

"Know what?"

"That you're not enough."

Silence.

Then—

Mira smiled.

Wide.

Sharp.

"…Yeah."

The illusions paused.

Mira spun her dagger.

"But I don't care."

She lunged forward.

"Because I don't fight alone anymore."

SLASH.

The illusions shattered.

Her surroundings cracked.

Seraphina stood in another space.

Alone.

A battlefield.

Covered in fallen warriors.

Her past.

Her failures.

"You couldn't save them."

A voice echoed.

She closed her eyes.

"…I know."

The voice continued—

"And you'll fail again."

Seraphina opened her eyes.

Calm.

Unshaken.

"…Perhaps."

She raised her blade.

"But I will still stand."

Golden light exploded outward.

The illusion cracked.

Izumi's Choice

Back with Izumi—

The illusion tightened.

The familiar figure reached toward him.

"You can stay."

"Leave all of this behind."

"No more fighting."

"No more pain."

Izumi's hand trembled.

For a moment—

He almost reached back.

Then—

He remembered.

Lior.

Mira.

Dianara.

Seraphina.

"…No."

His voice was quiet.

But firm.

"This isn't my place anymore."

The illusion flickered.

Velkira's smile faded slightly.

Izumi raised his hand.

Cold energy gathered again.

But this time—

Controlled.

Focused.

"I don't need this."

The ice formed—

But didn't spread wildly.

Instead—

It condensed.

Sharp.

Precise.

"I just need to move forward."

He slashed.

CRACK.

The illusion shattered.

Return to Reality

The world snapped back.

The facility returned.

The platform.

The walls.

Everything.

Velkira stood in the center.

Her expression calmer now.

But her eyes sharper.

"…Impressive."

Mira stretched.

"…That was annoying."

Seraphina stepped forward.

Blade ready.

Dianara looked around.

"…The domain is still active."

Velkira smiled softly.

"Of course."

She raised her hand.

"But now…"

The shadows around the room deepened.

"…we begin properly."

The real battle was about to start.
